How Fallout 3 will kick Oblivion’s ass

Hats--article_image.jpg

Craig Lafferty just sent me this preview from Games Radar’s Mikel Reparaz, titled 11 ways Fallout 3 will kick Oblivion’s ass. With a title like that, I think this preview deserves its own post.

Great article, Mikel, and by the way, my favorite way to start the game is to kill Megaton’s sheriff by sneaking up him while he is alone in his house, so I can get his outfit, including that awesome hat.

  1. Oblivion is still in my top 3 best 360 games made, so i hate to hear it dogged like Mike did.(He sounds like a real prick.) But on the other side of the coin, his descriptions of the Fallout 3 landscape sure are inviting. All this new footage and info is gonna make the next 3 months feel like an eternity.

  2. Sounds all great!
But I ask myself about two things:

1.) What will be the system requirements?

2.) Will it be possible to add modifications and scripts, just like in Oblivion?

  3. 1. Completely agree there. There were too few VA’s in OB
1.5 Also agree. Hopefully the faces in TES5 shall be like those from F3
    2. Can’t say I care for gore and especialy not for the Bloody Mess, the worst perk in history of Fallout
    3. Outdated landscapa and annoying loadings? I think Mike had an outdated PC because loading takes less then a second to me and the graphics were better then in most games, like in good old TES tradition (tough the landscape could have been made better).
    4. Well, there are some interesting places in OB but those in F3 shall be more memorable mostly because of thematic
    5. There is challenge in OB lockpicking as well. If anything, F3 lockpicking can be more challenging but not “at least challenging”
    6. It is good to know that conversation won’t be a database here!
    7. Completely agree
    8. Agree
    9. Thats a biased point! Some people like creepy, undead dogs more then normal ones!
    10. There is no competition here because you can’t have firearms in famtasy games…
    11. Hats are nice…

  4. The other big ‘feature’ that wasn’t (and hasn’t) been addressed yet is the leveling system. Will it be dynamic, like Oblivion’s, or will it be more static, and have a rat roll right over you at level 2?

    Good article, though.

  5. Am I the only person who thought this was an Oblivion mod. That is a Nord, and closer to the default Nord face model than you are after clicking ‘randomize’ once or twice.

Oblivion (‘s Art) With Guns, I suppose.

  6. I understand why you wouldn’t want Oblivion style play-doh graphics for faces in Fallout 3, but a more realistic setting is to be expected for that kind of game- in my opinion, Oblivion plays well with almost cartoon like expressions on the AI, it wouldn’t be as entertaining without that kind of thematic. There are many styles of gameplay graphics, and just because Fallout 3’s looks more realistic doesn’t necessarily mean it beats TES4 in that department.

  7. Hi,

I’m just finishing to read some Fallout 3 previews, and I’m fearing of some points…

Is there a really good reason to compare oblivion to fallout 3 ? I’m a fan of fallout and fallout 2, i ve hate oblivion, and when i read some articles witch deal with similarities between oblivion and fallout 3….

We want Fallout 3 ! We don’t want an OBLIVION LIKE ! Don’t kill this license plz :'(

  8. Interesting that their review of Oblivion didn’t mention any of those perceived problems…

Better late than never I guess.

  9. fallout 3 isnt going to kick oblivions ass, the pic
above looks like an oblivion nord or redguard with a moded outfit and weapon. plus oblivion is 2 years old so of course there is going to be better grafics
and landscape. plus if elder scrolls come out with a nother game, it going to be a shit load better than fallout 3.

  12. I’ll face reality that they aint planning on making a sequel to Oblivion any time soon. Whether they are shooting towards making a quality game with money not in mind, or even the other way around, and just trying to make money, making a second oblivion would be the best of both those worlds, you really couldn’t go wrong with making it. Even if WE* (many!) have to wait until Fallout is all said and done: Bethesda, please, save us from the mad crave and make the Oblivion sequel.

(or at the least, change the title of fallout to Oblivion 2)

  13. Hurry up and get this title -Fallout 3 – published, so that we can begin talking on TES 5. This game doesn’t have the compelling story and mythology the TES world has.The TES titles have a continuity. So Beth get it published and reveal us the work you’ve done so far on TES 5. On TES 5 We want our opinions heard, we demand the title to be more modding friendly, I ‘ve invested hundrends of hours on modding Morrowind and Oblivion and I’d like this to be useful in TES 5. Fallout 3 is just a test for TES 5.Also to the person who checks this blog: if you have a thread in the forums accepting suggestions on TES 5 would it be possible to email it to me?Thanks.
