Coverage from across the pond

The previews for Fallout 3 continue — with new coverage popping up following Pete’s European Adventure last week.

Gamespot has a featured preview on their site after Guy Cocker from their UK office went hands-on with the game for about an hour. Here’s a snippet of his playthrough:

“Above ground once again, we started to head out of town and toward downtown Washington, DC. We knew that we wouldn’t make it there in the short time period that we had, but we figured it was a good direction to head in. We started to come across some new enemies such as the feral ghouls, which are humanoid characters that had obviously been affected by radiation. We also encountered a trader with a hut full of goodies and a couple of dogs, although considering that we didn’t have any money, we couldn’t buy any of the items that he was offering.”

Elsewhere, there’s new previews at Xbox360Achievements.org and Bit-Tech. I found the Bit-Tech preview amusing — in that previewer Joe Martin refers to his character as Alvin Simon Theodore. It’s got me thinking about what I should name my character in the final build of the game. Also coming out of meetings in London, Strategy Informer has a new interview with Pete.

Back here in the states, Brian Crecente of Kotaku shared his “Best Of” picks from E3. Cool to see that he came away so impressed by the game.

  1. Hi all. After Oblivion, I became a huge Bethesda fan. To be honest, I haven’t played the earlier Elder Scrolls games before playing Oblivion, but I have to say, Oblivion was one of the best games I have ever played. I picked it up for my Playstation 3, which leads me to my question (may be slightly off topic).

Why is it, that Bethesda seems to be so against the Playstation 3 ?

At first, I was excited when Oblivion was supposed to be a launch title. I can’t afford a High End PC to play my games on, and I won’t buy the unstable hardware of XBox360. But when I read that Oblivion was supposed to be a launch title for the PS3, I was ecstatic. But when Oblivion was delayed, it was saddening. But I waited, and I played. The game is fantastic. Then you released the Shivering Isles expansion pack, which I gobbled up nicely. But you never released any of the other downloadable content (The Fighters Stronghold, the Mages Tower, Horse Armour, etc) and it looks like you never will. Why are Playstation owners left out of the dark in terms of downloadable content ?

Now we’re looking forward to Fallout 3, a series that has a soft spot in my heart (as well as many others). And I hear Bethesda is doing it. If by any accounts of Oblivion, Fallout 3 should be amazing. However, the first piece of saddening news is that you’re having Downloadable Content that is Exclusive to the 360. This kind of thing makes me upset as a Playstation 3 owner. Is my system not good enough ? Do you not want my money ? As a game player, do you hold me to a lesser standard ?

Fast forward to today. I’ve been reading about how you’re almost done the “Achievements” for the 360 but you’re not sure whether or not the Playstation 3 version will have Trophies (Playstation’s version of Achievements). I’m not sure how to make an passionate plea in text, but why don’t you include the Playstation 3 ? I’ve read before that you want all the experiences of your games to be equal across all platforms, but you are possibly leaving out something that adds to the experience.

What is the story ? Do you really not like the Playstation 3 or it’s user base ? Why am I not entitled to the same experience as my Xbox playing brothers and sisters ? Why are you constantly leaving the Playstation userbase out in the cold ?

How can I continue to support Bethesda, although you make great games, when I can’t have the full experience on my system ? I’m not, and probably never will, buying a 360, as I can only afford one expensive console at a time, each generation.

I’m sorry if this is off-topic, but as a Playstation 3 owner I feel very slighted when this is supposed to be the generation of equality across all platforms.

Thanks for reading and your time,
    Sincerely
    TristanMike
