What we’re listening to…

This week we’re looking at the music our developers are listening to, which is fun for me, because it gives me new bands to research. Given I rarely listen to the radio anymore (outside of Pandora), I’ll be sure to read up on some of the artists mentioned (looking up Ratatat as we speak). Oddly enough, most of my music purchases these days are based on reading about a band — not listening to them..

Speaking of bands I’ve read about, I had heard good things about The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. I took a chance on it, and ended up really liking it. If you’re a fan of The Stone Roses, you might like it too.

  1. I’ll join in:

Dimmu Borgir, Mastodon, Grendel, Suicide Commando, Bayside, Senses Fail, Chiodos, The Decemberists’ new album, Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, Serj Tankian.

  2. Lol, I guess for presents this year you will be wanting docking stations, skins, etc., etc. etc.

I will start looking closer to the pics and interviews to see if there is a hand holding up an iPhone in the foreground, lol.

  3. By the way, it may be my PC, but your blog seems to be glitching ever since “the night of The Pitt” (550 responses) – you may need to pull them off to a disk and delete them from the page. Then again, my PC has been lagging lately, so it could just be my experience.

  4. There’s a distinct lack of Drum’n’bass :-(

Hell, I don’t see a lot of EDM in there at all. And I thought you guys were geeks!

  5. I had the same thing, mALX. Clear your cache/internet history – I ran CCleaner – and it should show correctly.

My mp3 player died a death so I’m listening to mp3s on my phone. I’ve got a self-made compilation (from Amazon’s download service) of pop songs written by Timbaland (e.g. Madonna’s 4 Minutes) and I’m alternating that with Disturbed’s Indestructible album, but since we’re in a mini-heatwave, I’ll probably break out the Gwen Stefani later on.

After checking out some of the stuff on your list, of course!

  6. It totally rules to see The Ocarina of Rhyme on that list because Fallout 3 was my favorite game from last year. There is a remix in the works with a sample from “I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire” by the Ink Spots.

  7. @3rd: YYZ is for coding, Red Barchetta is for compiling. “Shifting and drifting / Mechanical music / Adrenaline surrrrge! (flailing drum solo)”

  8. I’ll join in also!
Mastadon, Franz Ferdinand, System of a Down, Daft Punk, Journey, and Franz Joseph Haydn. Etc. etc…

  9. @Tom: I’m a DnB fan. But more of the Liquid Funk genre (High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Danny Byrd, etc…).

And since you used the term EDM (which encompasses so many types of electronica), I would argue that many of what we listed IS under the EDM blanket definition. Portishead, Royksopp, Thievery Corporation, Cinematic Orchestra, Boards of Canada, Urban Myth Club, The Amalgamation of Soundz, The Dining Rooms, and Hird are all different styles of electronica(ranging from ambient, to lounge, to triphop, to nujazz, and more).

  10. [Nate Purkeypile, Ho Down Coordinator: This Will Destroy You, Boards of Canada, M83, and The Residents.]

Ooo The Residents! They’ve been one of my favorite wacky bands since i discovered them in the early 1990s playing their pc games FREAK SHOW and BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY which i got as a birthday gift from my brother inlaw.

I listen to mostly movie soundtracks when playing Bethseda games or moog versions of instrumental pieces like Moon River and Nights In White Satin etc.

My current FALLOUT 3 music folder has some David Bowie from the b side of the HEROES album which fits in perfectly with the gloomy wastelands along with a few slow mysterious pieces from Godzilla movies like DESTROY ALL MONSTERS.
