If you didn’t see it, today our parent company, Zenimax Media, put out a press release announcing the acquisition of id Software. Creators of world-renowned games such as DOOM, QUAKE, Wolfenstein, and its upcoming title, Rage, we’re very excited to have them join our family. Here’s a snippet from the release:
Robert Altman, the founder, Chairman & CEO of ZeniMax Media stated, “We, along with many others, consider id Software to be among the finest game studios in the world, with extraordinary design, artistic and technical capabilities. They have demonstrated, repeatedly, that rare ability to create franchise properties that are critical and commercial successes. Our intention is to make sure id Software will continue to do what they do best – make AAA games. Our role will be to provide publisher support through Bethesda Softworks and give id Software the resources it needs to grow and expand.”

Successful company getting bigger, always good to hear. Unless they go publicly traded.
WOW. Never seen this coming. Nice work.
Could BGS switch to id Tech engines instead of the flakey Gamebryo engine? Pleeeeeze?
Well done Bethesda!
Thats great news and there’s certainly no reason any fans would be opposed.
Can’t wait for the inevitable crossover fighting game series, id vs Bethesda.
Wow ! Talk about huge acquisitions
Wonder how this will influence BGS.
John Romero’s first interview since the acquisition can be found at http://podcast.avault.com. There newest episode, episode 35, is the one with the interview. Just launch the player there to hear it.
lets see if id’s games quality improves indeed or if it’ll get numbed down as beth’s games were since morrowind :/
i mean zenimax still seems like a better choice than EA but we must face it, bethseda games became more and more mainstream, which isnt a bad thing necessarily but if it means less features and less original ideas than it is imo not the best thing that could have happened
good luck to you and lets hope for the best
Thank Azura it wasn’t EA.
Although now we’re probably going to see a dumbing down of id games the way we have seen the last two Bethesda games go.
Thanks god id Software is not acquired by EA, or EA will ruin the games in every case.
Why would this have any effect on Bethesda games? They are just owned by the same parent company. They are both still independent game companies, and I can’t see any reason why id and Beth would cross over into each other’s game creation.
So ZeniMax now owns another company? Correct me if i’m wrong, but that dosen’t effect Bethesda much, does it? I mean, they’re just owned by the same parent company now, and I don’t know the structure, if they get a lot of autonomy or if ZeniMax breathes down thier necks. Meh, good for ZeniMax but if it dosen’t effect Bethesda’s game quality I’m a bit in the “well, whatever” realm.
So when will id be adopting the corporate logotype all the ZeniMax companies use?
This is very good news! It’s especially exciting if the company can leverage some of id’s exceptional game engine technology for other games (probably not TESV, but hopefully TESVI).
Congratulations on a great acquisition, guys!
I seem to be a bit confused but that could be because after Quake, I stopped playing games made by id. IMO Quake was Doom 3 set in a different realm, but nonetheless it was almost exactly like Doom so how could their games get dumbed down (any further)?
begin the countdown until doom and quake source code is ripped from id’s website…they are part of the corporate machine now they can’t be giving back to the community anymore
Pandora’s box has been opened with regards to the Wolf3D-Quake III source code regardless, even if the source code were removed from id’s website.
id could take the licensing of the vanilla Wolf3D-Quake III code back to proprietary, but they can’t revoke the rights of the people using that code under the terms of the GPL.
Congratulations to everybody. Truly this is a dream come true especially for the fans of id and Bethesda.
Nice =) I like Bethesda’s gameplay, storytelling and mod-friendliness and I like Id’s cross-platform engines, gameplay, and their gifts back to the community.
I’m not suggesting the developers be mashed together into some sort of terrifying hybrid, but at least they can talk with each other and share ideas =)
Wow, congratulations!
