Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Creation Engines

Update: If anyone is seriously considering this, we’ve got a few ideas in mind for a collection of quest rewards. How’s this for a shower gift: a Steam key that will grant you, and presumably Dovahkiin him/herself, every ZeniMax/Bethesda game — past, present and future — for life. Once your child eventually achieves cognition — and grows old enough to play intense video games — we think it will agree that this key blows away a pink pleated onesie. As for the rest of the loot, we’ll leave it as a surprise.

Original story: Our man Pete Hines sends word that today, February 18, is the ideal time to conceive if you’re looking to roll a new character/child on Skyrim Day — 11/11/11. Just how exactly he learned this is worth pondering, but we’ll take him at his word for the sake of amusing science.

So, think you have the stat points in you to produce the perfect eight pound dragon-slayer? Like the wizened wizard he is, Pete is throwing down with a casual quest, offering up an unknown reward to any couple adventurous enough to name their 11/11/11-born child “Dovahkiin.” While it may be difficult to play Skyrim from the hospital, just think of how many late nights you’ll have to lull your little Dragonborn with Jeremy Soule’s soothing music.

And with that, we have possibly doomed a child. I’d say this calls for a hefty disclaimer.

Disclaimer: Any reward for completing this quest will not ultimately justify the potential teasing your child could — and probably will — endure over its lifespan. Bethesda Softworks is not responsible for your parenting. You may gain experience points for completing this quest, but you will not care at 3am on a work night. Completion of this quest may also result in decreased desire to play video games and/or function as a human being. Consult with your friends before embarking on this quest; while it may not start in prison, it probably ends there.

  1. So, does Dovawhatnot have to be the only name for the kid?! Because John William Robert Thomas Dovahkiin Nathaniel Smith sounds save enough hidden away on a birth certificate until they get a ID…

  2. You should be able to name your child at any date this year and not just only 11/11, bad move Bethesda. No one will do this, especially since the name is so god damn ugly too. “Hi Dovahkiin”….. yeah, nice.

  3. I’d totally consider this if I was in the offspring market.

Any chance for a free copy of Skyrim and a video card if we just legally change our name to Dovahkiin? :)

  4. My first born is due in July, A little too early.

However, me and my wife are 100% keen to call our child Dovahkiin on it’s birth date if it means getting even some of this booty! Consider it Bethesda! My child could be a lifelong advertisement for your company :D

  5. What if we aren’t PC gamers? A Steam key would be useless for me.
Now if I could get console releases for the rest of my life, I might be more interested…

  6. Well I will be turning 21 this year but my birthday is on 11/11/11. What if I change my name to Dovahkiin on my birthday? Do I still get the unknown reward?!?!?! :D

  7. If our last effort was successful, we will be delivering on or near 11/11/11 – the paternity leave from work would be great if it occurred right at the release date of Skyrim.

  8. uhhh so i would be willing to change my name to dovahkiin for this reward… granted i will not be born on 11/11/11 my birthday does fall on this day and i will turn twenty. I think I should at least get a free copy of skyrim for my birthday. Whatcha think bethesda? Best birthday ever? I think so…

  9. I will name my child Dovahkiin, independently he (if girl, wouldn´t, cause it sounds really ugly for female) will be “released” on 11/11/11.
The reward is not important. And the name is not so bad, after you get used to it. Still, if my child born exactly at this day, he could understand that a greater force really wanted his name to mean Dragonborn and probably will not hate his parents. Lot of dialogue (and a high Speechcraft skill) needed.

Unfortunately, I´m almost sure he will not born that day, because my luck in real world is less than 50. And even if it was 50+, it would be necessary having a Conception value 95+ and it´s not the case of my girl.
The main thing is: don´t care if our baby will born at 11/11/11, Great Bethesda. Essencial here is that YOUR BABY will born that day. There are A LOT of people expecting that. And YOUR “Dovahkiin” surely will be well received by us.

    It´s Bethesda promoving strange-named-baby-boom.
    Shame on you, Beth :-)

  10. Is this for real? How come there are no comments on the Official Skyrim General Information Forum? Something like this surely caused some viral posting there… probably I’m just blinded by all Da Hype!

  11. I’m sure Dovahkiin is a perfectly acceptable name in some languages. lol I can picture it: “Come on Dova!”
Too bad I missed the conceive date. lmao

  12. Well we just found out my wife is due on November 15th. Would you guys settle for the little one’s nickname to be Dovahkiin? :P A Steam key would be nice, but not enough to attempt to convince my wife to put Dovahkiin on the birth certificate anywhere.

  13. Look, I never post on forums, but this is crazy quest made me do it.
There are plenty of people who are mentally are not very stable and do not have what it takes to bring up a normal child and give him or her good conditions to live. You are provoking them to make a child just for the sake of having free keys for your games or whatever it is. Apart from a silly name, there is a chance that some of those parents, will try to rush or delay act of delivery just to get the child on 11th November, thus risking childs health.
Bethesda are you insane? If on 11th November there is drastic increase of sudden births, that might have happened earlier or later and kids have health problem. People will know whom to blame. But I am interested how you would explain it to a 5 year Dovahkiin, who is neglected by his parents, that the only reason of his existence is a desire for free games to play?

What is the next quest? Shoot 5 people in the eye with a hand made bow in RL and get a unique golden bow in our future games?

Or you will just put a disclaimer that you are not responsible for the people shooting each other in the eye?

  14. I’m accully doing this my girl droned is due early November so we might be Abel to do this I was wondering how I would get ahold of you guys if it happens

  15. well… would it could if i changed my name to Dovahkiin? i mean, i already go by Lyrix now a days… ditched my crappy birth name ages ago… back to the point, i feel i would be a very strategic and preempt person to assign this quest too, given my odd choice in names, no one would see it coming… or are they supposed to see it coming….

  16. Why was the first thing I noted that they changed the picture from the released screenshot from saying “destruction” to “conception”, and somehow thought that was worse than the entire thing?

And this is freaking awesome lulz.

  17. (reads comments)

    (bethesda clarifies things)

    (serious idea)

Well, it’s march and I can’t get laid, but you never know…

  18. Nowdays people are namin there kids exotic names n old names such as david james tony keith randall arent used much unlike joseph andrew xavier sean brittany paige amber i guess its ppls way of sayin i want my child to be different my name is donavan its the only one spelled this way in the area i live in theres donovan donovin donalbain donoven donavon donevan doneven i cought hell in school cause everyone had regular names but it didnt bother me i am proud of my name it gets spelled wrong alot even by family to me its the coolest ever id hate to have a regular name

  19. My baby is due in a few weeks. If I could convince him to stay in there for just seven more months… shouldn’t be that hard to convince my girl, should it?

  20. I think to sweeten the deal bethesda should make a suit of armour like the one out of the trailer and make it a size so when they child reaches a certain age he/she will be able to where it :D DDDDD

  21. me:Hey guys! guess what!
    guys:what?
    me: I’m changing my name!
    guys:to what?
    me:Dovahkiin!
guys: awesome that means you would be Dovahkiin the Master!
    me:yep.

Bethesda people and fans my last name is the master in French :D DDDDDDD
man that idea would be awesome!

  22. My birthday is two days before the release of Skyrim, and I’m afraid I wont be able to pre-order it. I wish I could definitely get this game, and I will definitely name my first born child, Dovahkiin.

  23. I plan on completing this quest!!

I have a child on the way, due in November! I really hope they are born on 11/11/11

  24. can anyone else picture a deep voice shouting, “Dovahkiin! Stop playing that game and come do you homework!”

  25. my son in law is really considering this,my daughter is due(with my FIRST grandchild)on 11/11/11,my question how do i find the person responsible for this stupid idea so I CAN KICK THEIR ASS
