We’ve always been dedicated to our PC fanbase, and with Brink hitting shelves in less than two weeks, we’re here today to clarify just what we have in store for PC players regarding dedicated server support.
One additional note before we get down to business — we’re currently shooting to have Brink available to pre-load on Steam prior to the game’s release. We’ll have more specific info on that in the days to come.
Now, let’s get this FAQing underway:
What is the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server allows anyone to run multiplayer servers for the PC version of Brink. As the server is standalone, it does not require a full version of Brink to be installed and is completely free.
Where will I be able to get the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server will be available for download via Steam prior to release. Once the server is available, you can simply browse to the Tools tab in your Steam client and grab it from there.
Will I be able to run several instances of the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server on a single machine?
Yes. The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server comes with several pre-made bat files that automatically define different ports for each instance. It’s also possible for you to set your own, custom ports.
In terms of available game options, how customizable will the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server be?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server includes several different game configuration files covering all of the regular game modes, including campaign, stopwatch, objective, and co-op challenges. In addition, there are a variety of server-side commands available that allow you to further customize your server, including team sizes, time limits and overtime, warm-up rules, friendly fire, voice chat, availability of Command Post buffs, rank restrictions, number of bots, and password.
I represent a Game Server Provider. How can my company offer servers for Brink?
Easy! Once the Standalone Dedicated Server is available on Steam, you’ll be able to start getting Brink game servers up for your customers. We’re currently aiming to have the server files available before release so you’ll be all set when the game comes out.

Awesome!
Good! This is how PC FPS multiplayer servers should be run, not like so restrictive like COD has become.
It is really sad that most of the recent FPS games coming out are steering away from dedicated servers. It is an annoyance in games like CoD when the other guy wins simply because he has the best connection. I hope fore future projects you look into setting up a dedicated server for each of the platforms as well as the PC, a lot of players will absolutely love you and will spend longer hours playing your game, simply because of the fact that players around the world can play without loosing because of having a poor ISP(Like me).
Good luck in future events,
Reid
You, bethesda and splash understood what some didn’t, and you didn’t screw up the Hardcore PC gamers. *CoughactivisionretardsCoughCough*
This game sounds like it will be perfect on the PC. Already preordered it, so happy!
Even server information has been released now, im calm finally!
What about modding/map creating? Will you be releasing an SDK?
Will there be a Linux server, as with other Splash Damage games?
Will the standalone server support Linux?
Will a Linux Dedicated Server be able also via steam much like TF2?
Very good news. You guys know, how to support the PC-Gaming community. Im impressed
Awesome news, REAL dedicated servers support.
Is there a Linux flavor? Can we run more than one server at a time on a single box? Is it multithreaded unlike srcds?
why not for xbox?
are we not good enough?
Hey,
cool new so far … But what about a linux dedicated server?
@CorkonionCowboy
buy a pc
What about the rest of restrictions needed for competition? i.e. Weapon/Ability limitations, Damage/Accuracy tuning …
Will consoles have dedicated servers too?
Will it be possible to host servers on linux? Or are they windows only?
no linux server files? no steam independent server? I don’t want to have steam installed on my brink server so i can play with my friends….
@CorkonionCowboy nope your not
The one piece of news I’ve been waiting for.
Per-ordering completed
Will there be linux binaries?
uhm… BADASS! this is super exciting! and, no, it’s not for Xbox because MS provides servers for that – paid servers.
some questions…
- what platforms will the server run on? (please, please offer Linux builds!)
- will it run on a LAN?
- will there be anti-cheat software?
- will there be global player/character stats?
What about Linux support?
Put simply:

Great news, but as emilio i wonder if there will be linux builds. And if on a windows server, it will be download-able thru srcds rather than steam.
Anyway, thanks for keeping the PC community alive.
I don’t know if i am going to buy the game or not cuss there is one thing i got to ask are there any over powered snipers or noobtubes/granade launchers?
Awesome !!!!!
@emilio
Last 2 Points:
- if im remember correctly, they use VAC by valve (which is generally a really good anti cheat Support Tool)
- also im sure there are global leaderboards
I’m so glad Brink has dedicated servers for PCs. I think I’d have actually cried if a game this good was ruined by something as stupid as Local Hosting
as has been said by many – will the dedicated server be able to be run on Linux and as steam independent?
knowing these has just made me super keen for this game , up untill this we werent sure if it would be possible to get servers in SA , after reading this i already preordered CANT WAIT < great work .
will linux standalone dedicated server files be released or not?
Will linux servers be available on release?
That’s awesome! Thank you.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL for this. It’s amazing how much I miss dedicated servers and a real shame that nowadays most developers just plain don’t give a sh*t about their customers/fans.
As a gamer in South America (Uruguay to be precise) this will allow me to game with less than 300ms of delay, a truly pathetic status for so-called “AAA” titles that disregard most of the world as filthy pirates.
Again, THANK YOU
LAN/Linux support?
Very nice to hear! And preload coming too! Thank you!
What OSes does the server run on?
Will you guys be publishing sysreqs (RAM, CPU, bandwidth!!) as well? Need to know how many I can feasibly run on the box I’ve got!
@Rob, requirements were already posted here:
http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/04/12/steamworks-feature-set-and-system-requirements-for-brink-revealed/
YES! I’ll get it twice!
Grate new.
You now have 99% of are clan preordering
Nice to see that some Dev,s still understand the Pc side of things
were some are now making a balls up and forgeting all the past and what made Pc game grate.
Gold Star to Bethesda for showing how it should be done.
We need LAN support and Linux dedicated servers.
Same concern than others : will there be linux servers? Otherwise, well… it loses all its uses.
Hi does any hlds tool linux/ win planned for server admin? Because this is the smoothest way to instal /update a server.
Will we have some servers running with linux?
Just on the off chance this hasn’t already been asked. Linux?
Incredible how many questions about linux server support have been asked, yet no one can issue a simple “yes” or “no” response.
@gstaff: I think @Rob meant dedicated server requirements, which I’d wager is not necessarily the same as running the game, right?
