News on the Creation Kit and Game Updates

It’s been a few weeks since our last update on Skyrim’s status, so we wanted to share details on what we’re working on.

The Creation Kit and Steam Workshop are nearly ready. We’re currently working with members of Valve and our modding community to do some final testing, and we’re on track for a public release near the end of the month. We think Skyrim modding is one of the game’s best features, and we have the best modders of any game. It’s been a lot of exciting work for us, and we can’t wait to unleash it.

Skyrim’s 1.4 update is currently undergoing testing on all three platforms. The update will include fixes and optimizations for the most common issues people have been reporting (see below). We’re hoping to finalize this next week, and submit it to the console manufacturers for certification, as well as release on PC.

Our current update plan for the PC is to first release our updates as “beta” versions through Steam. This is something you’ll be able to opt into through Steam and back-out of if needed. This is an extra safety check for everyone going forward and should expedite and improve our updating process for our PC users. We’ll have more info soon on how this will work.

Echoing what we said back in December, we’ll continue to look into issues that are being reported and subsequent updates will follow. You have all supported Skyrim in a huge way, and we’ll be supporting all of you, and continue to make the game better.

After the break, check out the current changelog for 1.4.

  1. Is the problem in Markath getting fixed when committing a crime after escaping cidnah mine causes the guards to try and fit you up for the conspiracy again?

    • Called this one a mile away. They are working with Valve so I figured it would be pulled back into February. Taking a guess at it right now I’m putting my money on February 8th. Seems like a good date. Well yeah… It’s the 31st and it’s not here, so… start guess thing date.

  2. Currently I can not play Skyrim with out my PS3 crashing within a few minutes, if not at start. I’m about 80-90 hour into the game. I was wondering a couple things.
Will the new patch cause me to start over? And if so or if it doesn’t solve my issues, will Bethesda refund my money?
One last question, if Skyrim locks my system again in the future and the hard restart ends up ruining the hard drive like the warning message the PS3 displays every time the game forces me to do this, will Bethesda compensate me for a replacement HD since it’s their programming that is causing my system to crash?
    Thank you

  3. Well it is now officially January 31st, and there is still no Creation Kit. This is getting to be more than a little annoying. Let’s review the history of the Creation Kit thus far. First they said that they hoped it would be available on release day. Then they said coming shortly. Then they said a January Release, which to most people meant, if not January 1st, then at least by or around the 15th. Now it looks like its not even going to be released in January or, if it is, it’ll be at 11:59 PM. Since Bethesda’s policy with PC gamers seems to have turned to a
“we’ll make the game for console, give you a bad port, give the 360 first grabs at the still unannounced DLC packs, and then expect you guys to pick up the pieces and turn the game from potentially great to actually great”
approach, then the very least they could do would be to give us the tools needed to fix the game. And seriously, just tell us when the thing is going to be released. No more vague “just around the corner” or “soon after this patch”. Let’s hear a date and time when we can start making Skyrim what it was meant to be

    • Whining about it wont help.. I’m looking forward to the Creation Kit as much as the next fan of this game, but honestly i know how annoying it is having people breathing down your neck about something.. Its like a child wanting candy, even though you were going to give it to the child, the begging for candy from the child makes you want to take it away from it.

    • I feel what you’re saying, but even so, I’d rather have a workable CK without flaws than another half-finished product ;)
      Keeping my fingers crossed.

    • They should just make the beta ck open after today, that way we can at least get our hands on it.

I mean its been a little over 2 months since the game’s release, throw us a bone already! An SDK would have been the least you could have done. Most people have already given up on Skyrim, for many reasons that need not be named. I not recommending Skyrim to my friends. How many other people do you think have done the same?

Only the extremely hard core players seem to still be around. The majority of people who would have comprised a great modding community have either moved on or gone their own ways and will not become part of a close nit community.

Thanks BETH for the 3rd game that can’t perform, I am done with Skyrim and I am done with your company. Until you can thoroughly prove to me you know how to run a software company for creating a product and not hype, you wont see another penny from me.

    • Disagree. I don’t know anyone, aside from random people with entitlement/patience and common sense issues, who thought the CK was going to be out anywhere near the first of the month. Heck, I didn’t expect it until the end of the month, if not next month. Why? Because I know COMPANIES in general, not JUST Bethesda.

It’s going to be done when it’s done, get some common sense and stop expecting a company with many different things affecting their scheduling to meet a schedule they never even gave an exact date for.

  4. Come on Todd Howard from Bethesda studios this is a Game that many of us have been waiting apon for months and months and watching many an interview with you about what a Huge Groundbreaking game this was gonna be and what a Dissapontment. i am at level 43 and the frame rate is unbearable do you actually have your games tested properly before release or are you just cashing in on all us poor Gamers i payed 100 dollars for Skyrim and should be able to play it at a Good frame rate and have Product back up to fix and issues it shows us what you think of your loyal supporters releasing a Game before its been properly tested to Cash in on the Release date of 11/11/11

  5. I live in Russia, so will I be able to download CreationKit as soon as it is released, or its release date is different in different countries?

  6. So… Are you guys ever going to fix the bug with the Companion quests involving making yourself not be a furry anymore? Cause I’d really like to not be anymore.

      • Very close as in wrapping up development, wrapping up testing or marketing answer? This is getting very frustrating as we’re passing the 3rd ‘timeframe’ we were given for the release and nothing.

        Very Frustrating.

      • I guess the date is 12.12.12.
The same day Diablo 3 is released.

Well, you said end of January, but did not specified what year.

        • …So I will just keep rapidly hitting F5.
p.s. I really hated steam before, I will hate it even more if I know this delay is caused by Steam Workshop s**t.

      • “We don’t have the final date set.” Funny, but I seem to recall reading something about a “January release.” Would that be January 2014? I understand you guys have a lot of crap to do, but maybe you shouldn’t make statements that you cannot live up to?

  7. So. The 31st and still no creation kit.

    C’est la vie.

If it isn’t ready it isn’t ready. So cut the Bethesda devs some slack guys. I would rather get it when it’s done then get it and wait for the patches to fix it.

  8. How about the Elemental Fury bug wherein the offhand weapon moves insanely slow? Pretty much kills my dual wielding character’s usefulness.

  9. So, I’m anxiously awaiting the patch for the PS3 version. Any eta?

As far as the flaming/angry/ck related discussions go, well…a lot of games are released with the occasional glitch/bug. I can only comment on the PS3 version. I bought the collector’s edition for the PS3 thinking it was going to be a better experience, but I was wrong. I just find it odd that my game is so glitchy, yet my friends who have it on the PS3 are not experiencing nearly as much as the glitch that I have. On the other hand, the game is engrossing enough to keep me playing (currently clocked at 270 hours of saved playing time). I really hope this patch comes out because I want to be able to play for a few hours without having to get frozen up coming out of one my homes.

Still a fan of Bethesda (Fallout Fanboy for life) but I don’t think I’ll ever buy a Bethesda title on the PS3 again. I’ll stick with the xbox.

  10. Where is the CK? Bethesda said they hope it will be available on the realease day. Then they said it will be avalaible in a few days. Then it was january. And now? Please answer me Bethesda :D

  11. Everyone thats keeps posting about them taking too long and oh noo why no CK… Get a life you kids are very annoying (including the adult gamers that keep complaining) maybe just MMAYBE if you all weren’t up beth’s @$$ every five seconds, they could get stuff done better if they weren’t worried about due dates to please their incredibly impatient fans. I think Bethesda needs a new rule, content and patches get done when Bethesda says so, if they can take their time and work out the bugs, with no stress of a time limit and due dates, the quality would be far better. Are you fans really DIEING without a freaking video game wow, go ride a bike or sooomething and let beth do their job. Play the game in moderation people.. If you don’t, you get whiney addicted fans that become glued to the place where they can complain about minor bugs, that they probably wouldn’t discover in the first place if they didn’t play the game 20 hours each day. :D Love ya Bethesda

  12. Any fix for the bug at Mzulft in the Revealing the Unseen Winterhold College quest?

You need a key from the body of Gavros Plinius at entrance of Mzulft but sometimes he is frozen, will not die and cannot be pickpocketed. This has also happened in PC versions of the game. Cut-scene did not appear. May be caused by attacking him while he is talking or attempting pickpocket. Doesn’t appear to be fixed by coming back later or rebooting game

  13. I made this post knowing it would be read by you guys, but don’t “okay” it to public view, all I see are people complaining and still not shutting up. But I see you “okay’d” other posts after mine that was clearly supporting you guys, they all need to see what they sound like by reading my last post, the one that says love ya at the end. It will possibly give you a break from the endless insults they throw at bethesda, I know if they annoy me, they annoy you. You can edit some of my last post so its viewable if it seems offensive, you guys shouldn’t have to be controlled by complaining kids that are impatient. Again I say dont allow this message to be seen, I just made it to hopefully get my last post seen.

  14. I am a fan of your elderscroll games and have played them for years. That being said I am very disappointed in the lack of communication concerning the creation kit. The vague “coming soon” or “almost done” are getting quite old. Let your loyal fans know what the issues are. Tell us what is taking so long. I believe the biggest frustration with Bethesda and the creation kit is your lack of communication regarding the release of the CK. Be more open and let us know what is really going on. We will be much more understanding.

  15. So Bethesda gives the beta patch to us pc users to do testing for them and then Xbox users get the DLC first? Wow, what an awesome way to thank us for helping to fix their buggy game. Something just does not seem quite fair about that. Thanks Bethesda! We really appreciate your using us as guinea pigs to fix the game and then getting treated as second class citizens when it comes to DLC.

  16. How about at least the courtesy of an official comment about whether the new patch will be released today like we were led to believe instead of total silence from you guys? Is that really asking too much??

        • Sry for that, but you, not personally ofc, indeed promised we will get CK with the game release, then you missed it, then you promised it in January, then near the end of Janry, missed again. So you, now personally, go to whoever responsed for this and tell ppl are running out of patience, pls.

      • I see that there is no mention of fixing the bug where if you clear th cave before starting “The Taste of Death”, the game freezes when you attempt to re-enter the cave t complete the quest. This meand, I cannot get the final Daedric item I need to get my trophy. I don’t want to become a Warewolf so, the Companions quest route is not available for me to clear this trophy.

  17. I like a Game that works, for everything you can do in it.

So Don’t rush it, take your time, get it right.

For you people that are trying to get a CK as fast as humanly possible, calm down. Bethesda knows that a strong Modding community is good for their Games, and I think that if it takes a little longer it will be better.

To Bethesda; Please take your time, but you need to let people know a good and reliable Date for release, and if you can’t make a good estimate, please make it for the latest guess you have, and do the best you can.

    Mr. K

    • The only reason I’m mad is because it’s mostly delayed for a feature we don’t need. Like Bethesda is great, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t understand why they can’t just give us a finalized release date at the least, like I want day, month, year. The Creation Kit was one of the biggest selling points for me, I loved it in Morrowind and Oblivion (well the construction set then), so this is pretty annoying.

    • I second this comment. I’d rather wait a bit more for the quest fixes to work than have something rushed. p.s. I’m on a PS3 and since the last update have seen no real issues on large file graphics slow downs. Thanks Bethesda.

    • This is completely understandable, but I wish they had given us over estimates and said March back in November so that if they finished early we could have a nice surprise rather then giving us their actual time table because things like that never happen on time.

  18. I’ve already progressed so far in the game that the mods are almost out too late. A large portion of the fun is experiencing the game with your own flavor. It sucks that you couldn’t get your act together and get the kit out in time. For me, modding is what made oblivion so much fun. Crappy way to put a sour taste in the mouths of the true fans of your work. I put the game down and don’t anticipate on picking it back up either way now. You knew awhile ago that the kit wouldn’t be out on time again. Just update people and be honest.

  19. i didnt see it in the list of bug fixes, is the waking nightmare quest where erandur dissapears when walking in tot he night caller temple?

  20. Well the post for the Steam Beta is locked so no one can post anymore….atleast thats overwith…. im guessing your going to go ahead and say the CK will be out in mid February(Hopefully that doesn’t mean march 1st). Im hoping your not really going to give xbox dibs on whatever DLCs u make, thats simply the worst way to sell out.

  21. Wooot i sure do love this new CK…oh wait i still dont have it! me and my fellow modders have been more than patient! im usually not much of a pessimist when it comes to games, but seriously give us our CK for PC already. no need to work on the patch for PC we can fix it ourselves just like we have for years now. so please hurry the $%#@ up.

  22. i also say you should make steam optional, i have to stay in “offline mode” or i end up fighting with steam for 30 mins or more because it cant connect with server and my connection is 100%. steam is a joke. it works great if you dont want a bunch of discs laying around but if a mod messes up the game and you have to reinstall it takes hours to do so. i realize everybodys system is different but if your stuck with a low level garbage pc steam is a major hinderance.

  23. question? when the ck is released were do we get it? under the dlc tab to the right of the game in our library? the skyrim store page? or is there going to be a totally different page for this “steam workshop” if thats what its called?

  24. Could a fix also be prepared (probably for 1.5 then) whereas the quest ‘Fetch me that book!’ cannot be completed when the random request for a book is a book that is already in one’s possession ? I currently have it (on X360) where I can’t complete the quest because I already found the book (in my case: Fragment on Artaeum, found in Bleak Falls Barrow). See also the entrance in Skyrim’s wiki; apparently this bug is known already for a longer time …

  25. I mentioned this before and since this is Bethesda I got a vague non-answer. What a surprise. I know a lot of pc users who think it’s pretty crappy of Bethesda to use us for their beta testing to help fix their game that was woefully unprepared for it’s release and yet Xbox 360 still gets dlc before we do? How about showing some appreciation and at least releasing dlc for pc at the same time as 360? From the past track record it would actually be smarter to give it to pc first so we can work all the bugs out. So how about it Bethesda? What about showing a little common courtesy and at least giving us dlc at the same time as 360? I doubt I will see an answer to this but it would be nice to be proven wrong.

    • They probably could have bargained with Microsoft to have the deal apply to both Xbox and PC, seeing as theyre both Microsoft platforms. And if they really want to use us for their beta testing they should just do what theyve always done and let the modding community fix the bugs ourselves. Its much faster, and then they could just do the same thing for the consoles.

  26. Its 7:15 where I am in the states and still no update on the release of the ck or the update. Besthesda, you guys have shown in the past that you deliver when you say that you will have something ready and then blam there it is. But for some reason you have almost turned into the government boasting release date after release date with no results or statements to give us an idea of what to expect. Just a bunch of cloak and dagger with the whole modding community in tangled knots wondering what is going on. Look I suggest no more promises and no more of this its almost.. wait.. no almost.. wait…wait…almost here now garbage and just tell us it will be here when you decide that its ok to put out. That way we won’t be in this rediculous waiting game getting our hopes up and then dashed. Its like having a gf who gets you ready to go then says naw lets just go to sleep. We don’t like being blueballed. Other than this incident with the lapse in judgment about release times and dates you guys are always spot on when you put out games. I love your products and love the fact that you completely and openly support the modding comunity. In that aspect other game developers should follow in your foot steps. Thanks guys you’ve taken awhile to get this out now take your time and get it right.

  27. I for one have been waiting patiently for the CK. I have never done mods before so I am very excited to try. Complaining about when it will come out won’t solve anything. Ok no it didn’t come out when they said it MIGHT come out. No big deal. I am sure they want to make sure that it is going to be a great kit with as little bugs as possible. Enjoy the beat patches PC gamers cause Bethesda didn’t even have to release them to us. Skyrim is a huge game and of course had some issues. All games have issues at release. Bethesda seriously thank you for making this great game. CK will be great. Release it when it’s ready. Thanks again Bethesda.

  28. I honestly hav not experianced any bugs or glitches at all, as far I can recall. I play on PC, have played the game for a total of approximately 64 hours, and I have no outside modifications added to my game. While I was rather irritated with the Steam requirement, as it reduces speed of download and is generally more difficult than a direct installation, I am quite satisfied with this game.
I would, however, LOVE to get some mods like I had for Oblivian such as the Vile Lair, new Races, and weopons based upon my favorite anime. Whenever the Construction Kit becomes available, I will certainly download it. No hurry. But sometime February would be tremendous.

  29. just release it alrdy!!! Atleast the beta so we know whats it like. You can fix the real version while we play around with the beta. COME ON BETHESDA HURY UP!!

  30. Literally the ass-end of Jan. and no sign of the CK, assuming we’ll be waiting after the 1.4 patch in order to really have some fun once everything’s vanilla has been completed. Seriously, all I want is to ride a dragon and enslave my fallen foes for house servants and/or sell them for money. Is that too much to ask for?

  31. Does this patch fix the problem with the ending of the “Battle for Windhelm” quest?

    **SPOILERS BELOW**

Many players, including myself, are having a problem where at the end of the attack on Windhelm, when entering the Palace of the Kings, the General and Legate do not enter and if my character enters the Palace, she’s frozen and can only spin in a circle or ‘wait.’ I’ve tried everything to get around it (I’m on xbox360 btw), but from what I’ve read, it seems to be a result of the last patch.

So, is this going to be fixed in this patch or do we have to wait for the next one? Really frustrating just because it’s the very end of the quest. Thanks.

  32. Haven’t read back far enough to see if anyone posted about this, but fix the damn Waking Nightmare quest. Erandur simply disappears as you enter the temple and is no where to be found. But his marker is further inside the temple, and since he is gone I cannot continue. I’m playing on the 360, so I have no easy solutions to this. Would really love to be able to get the final daedric artifact.

    Thanks.

  33. Welp, 10:46 p.m. and still no CK. Bethesda, your game is awesome but…… your loyal modders are running out of options. I mean cmon, they are retexturing BREAD for peta’s sakes. The dovahkiin doesn’t care what his bread looks like. He does care though about new user created quests and stories for his fus-ing pleasure. Please release the CK as soon as possible. Please! Our only options are My Little Pony retextures and Sesame Street retextures. Why torture us like that? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Bethesda, where do I start? You were one of my favorite game companies. Ever. Since the release of Skyrim you have been giving out “dates” of when the CK will release. You have missed THREE. Don’t you feel a little embarrassed? This really, really hurt your public image.

It seems you guys followed the Activision route – take our money, and make false promises. Morrowind’s CS was released on day one. Oblivion’s was released BEFORE the game even came out. Skyrim? Three months+.

Fans were entitled to the CK, in June. You stated we would be getting it, and now it seems we may never. Although we will eventually get it, I feel that we could have gotten it much earlier if it wasn’t for Steam Workshop. We have the Nexus, and we have Planet Elder Scrolls. Why add more confusion with the Workshop (which will probably never be used anyway)?

Better yet, why do we even need Steam to play this game? The past ES’s have been perfect without it. All Steam is a complete annoyance. I can’t believe I NEED Steam to play this game.

    Bethesda, you should feel horrible.

    • THANK YOU! the fact i have to have steam doesnt really bother me. i just want my damn CK. if they would have released it when the game come out or shortly after then the PC modding community would already be able to patch any issues with glitches and bugs. then Beth could just focus on the horrific console versions (not hating on consoles either, i was playing skyrim on xbox while i was working on putting my dual gtx 590s in my pc but since i finished my pc i havent even touched my xbox) but there is still a lil part of me thinking that Beth will try redeem themselves, just hope im right.
