News on the Creation Kit and Game Updates

It’s been a few weeks since our last update on Skyrim’s status, so we wanted to share details on what we’re working on.

The Creation Kit and Steam Workshop are nearly ready. We’re currently working with members of Valve and our modding community to do some final testing, and we’re on track for a public release near the end of the month. We think Skyrim modding is one of the game’s best features, and we have the best modders of any game. It’s been a lot of exciting work for us, and we can’t wait to unleash it.

Skyrim’s 1.4 update is currently undergoing testing on all three platforms. The update will include fixes and optimizations for the most common issues people have been reporting (see below). We’re hoping to finalize this next week, and submit it to the console manufacturers for certification, as well as release on PC.

Our current update plan for the PC is to first release our updates as “beta” versions through Steam. This is something you’ll be able to opt into through Steam and back-out of if needed. This is an extra safety check for everyone going forward and should expedite and improve our updating process for our PC users. We’ll have more info soon on how this will work.

Echoing what we said back in December, we’ll continue to look into issues that are being reported and subsequent updates will follow. You have all supported Skyrim in a huge way, and we’ll be supporting all of you, and continue to make the game better.

After the break, check out the current changelog for 1.4.

  1. Ok so how about some fixes for armor visual glitches like, male shrouded armor almost nothing in the armor that makes it cool is showing ( chest straps, mask, hood draping over shoulders, etc) and linwe’s armor in first person the arms don’t show up just have some floating gloves. Both of these armors I love but they dont look right, and the mask on nightingale armor shows up on males but not shrouded why is that?

  2. Dear Bethesda Software,

    Why are you so rude? Why do you respect your customers so little?

    It’s been a couple of days since the release of 1.4 was due, and only silence from Bethesda. Not even a note on your own blog that you will be a little late. Nothing.

    Why does Bethesda feel the customers are not worth even a minimal show of courtesy or respect?

    • i like to remind that it most likely is NOT Bethesda’s problem as far as we know they done there job…but also STEAM have to do some changes
      we most likely are waiting for steam’s next update patch

    • The blame most likely lies with the console companies. Every patch has to be “checked” by the console companies before they will allow them to be distributed and downloaded by everyone. I have it for the PS3, but this is just one of the many reasons I would have preferred to have gotten it for the PC. That and the modding community. I’ve been playing this game for nearly 200 hours and haven’t encountered anything that “broke” the game for me, so I’m VERY happy. And if this latest patch improves the lag I’ve just now started to have in game…. well, then I’ll be VERY VERY happy. Love this game. Love Bethesda.

  3. First of all, i love the elder scrolls its in my opinion the best game series ever!!!
    But…..

    Please do NOT make your game steam dependant!!!!!!!
    The irritation starts when i get my collectors edition of skyrim two days before release. I went home very excited, cause i could play skyrim in the evening. But after installation the irritating steam program said that i couldn’t play,because it wasn’t released yet!!!!!! What the diddly!!!!!!!
    I paid 150€ for this game and i can’t play, even if i have a retail copy in my hand!!!!

    please make sure i either don’t get the game, or steam just shuts up and lets me play. And now again we are waiting for interaction with the steam workshop……

    just leave steam and steam compatibility out of your games, i am pretty sure that the most substantial part of the modding community doesn’t like or want it. I mean things worked just fine without steam.

    I beg u, please release the creation kit. Even in an “as is” state. And please leave out the steam stuff!!! U will only lose customers with steam dependancy NO ONE WANTS IT OR NEEDS IT

    Don’t get me wrong. U guys are great and your games are too, but steam is not, i repeat NOT!!

  4. Just a few minor thoughts…let’s be patient about the CK. If you want a good CK then you have to wait…yes, I know the game is buggy due to a release that never should have happened when it did, but let’s not rush the program that can help us fix it. Also, I hope the house buying quest in Windhelm gets fixed, I still can’t get the quest to start and I’ve been in and out of Windhelm about 32 times! Lastly, rumor has it that Skyrim has zero re-sale value. If you don’t like the game, that’s fine but there’s no sense selling it to someone else because once the game is activated through Steam it can’t be re-activated by anyone else. I do have to say “Shame on you, Bethesda” because you initially lead people to believe (prior to release) that the game would be playable with or without Steam, yet the first “patch” you released made Steam manditory for gameplay. Anyone that knows me knows I HATE 3rd party vendors in software because they tend to screw up the works, and this has been no exception. I would like to know if you intend to re-imburse those who can longer play the game due to this little stint you pulled…namely dial-up users (because the connection is too slow), satilite users (because they have limited downloads), and people who still have to use public computers. I have read complaints from all three classes and you (Bethesda) have definitely made your share of enemies. I know that if any other game you create even BREATHES the word Steam, I won’t be buying it.

  5. is there going to be a fix to enemies not re-spawning. there is a few quest i cannot complete cuz of this and it is annoying having vilkas follow me every where cuz a dragon don’t spawn. and is there going to be anything were the armor u give your followers stay on them even if u leave them at home just to make them look bad ass at all times. and is there going to be anything on trading spouses even if they are not your follower just to make em look better or change there weapon from a pick axe to something better or even nothing.

  6. Concerning the Creation Kit failing to meet the appointed release date for third time:

    Arrived to this point -February 2012- I seriously think that Bethesda must offer the Skyrim’s Creation Kit as a public beta release -like they are doing with 1.4 patch. After all, we all know that this Creation Kit is being tested by a number of users -this closed-beta participation isn’t even recent; rather, it is going on from months-, chosen ones by Bethesda according to who knows what criteria . . .

    Like others, I bought this game in 11-11-11 believing that the Creation Kit was part of the release: we customers deserve at the very least a beta participation on the Creation Kit!

  7. Thanks for the updates and patches, guys! I’m really looking forward to being able to finish the Thane of Riften quest. :D

    Is there a fix in the pipeline to allow players to marry Lydia? Please tell me this is in the works…

  8. I wouldn’t resort to poking at the guy responding to the comments just because there is a Bethesda tag by him. I’m looking forward to the Creation Kit as well, not only for the enhancements to the current mod community but to try to mod myself. But, everyone complains when a game is released with bugs, they couldn’t have kept it a little longer and released a ‘full game’ is what I hear a lot, so I don’t see any point in rushing someone in design and release. However: I would ask that there be an update as learned, if it looks like it’s going to take a week, I’d like to see that in the updates or news, so people aren’t impatiently staring at the thread for three days leading to the end of the month. Further more, if we could have the updates on the status of the project, say every three or four days along, and promises of an actual announcement of both the 1.4 full(non-beta) release, as well as the Construction Kit, when released, then it might help some people to relax and such. Think that’s feasible Bethesda guy, GStaff, to have those things in the mean time?

  9. Why is there so many glitches involving missions? I get half way thru a mission only to have a character Im supposed to get information off or give an item to, only to have absolutely no way of doing this because the characters dont have any speech option involving my quest or item….. Its really frustrating considering Ive spent 90hrs+ playing and the only reason I cant finish the game is because of this. (I have finished the game before & Ive checked my official strategy guide so I know this IS a glitch and not a player error)

    Why dont you think about creating a “correction scan” that could be located in the option menu? it would enable player to scan their game file which could take a few minutes and the computer could check the questline against what has & hasnt been done by the player. Anything found in this scan that isnt right could then be automatically reset by the computer. For expample the player may have to restart the quest. This might be annoying for some but its better than playing for 90hrs+ only to have to start from scratch because of a glitch. Or even simpler just have a reset quest option available in the active & completed quests menu.

    I realize this wouldnt be a small patch but players having these problems would surely be greatful.

  10. Im posting this again in hope that it might actually get an answer from Bethesda…. Ive emailed them numerous times and gottne nothing but “sorry your experiencing glitches we are working on updates currently.”
    I have a great solution to quest related glitches that will fix things 100%

    (PROBLEM) Its not uncommon that I get half way thru a mission only to have a character Im supposed to get information off or give an item to, only to have absolutely no way of doing this because the characters dont have any speech option involving my quest or item….. 11. WHAT ABOUT THE BUG WHERE THE END TABLES AND CHESTS IN YOUR BREEZEHOME DON’T SORT ITEMS! Made me angry not to see it on the list -_-|

  12. I give the guys at Bethesda some serious props for making such a good game. Admittedly, it has its bugs. No good game goes without them. Letting the modding community help out is something that makes the company unique, as it actively lets people play with their game and improve it as they see fit. As far as the Creation Kit release date, I place my trust in the fact that it will be out soon. It just seems that I have more patience than most in that regard.

    Do what you have to do, Bethesda.

  13. Ill met by moonlight is bugged for me didnt see any notes on fixing that mission. The white stag is stuck inside of a mountain and so I am stuck with the cursed ring of Hircine since I cant kill the damn stag! Also the Jarl of Falkreath is glitched for me cant help him and I want to be Thane.

  14. Is that all ???? There are tones of other quest bugs. If you take as you wingman that Gorbash iron fist-something etc…he often don’t fight he stays like an idiot(he doesn’t react at all) and NPCs kill him or attack me. That’s very annoying. Another annoying thing is :if you eneter a cave before getting its quest , when you finally get its quest , you have to do it again, killing the same people, the items are again there etc. WTF is that ?? It’s really tiresome. The bard quest is still signaled even if you finish it, so are other quests I can’t remember now, but they lay in my list. There is that bug I don’t see it solved in the log, where that fellow (blad master or something) doesn’t open the door in thieves sewers. I understand that his sounds files missing triggers this bug. So Bethesda…what the WTF are you doing ? Solve ALL the bugs and AFTER release a patch ! Don’t you read the gamers complaints ??? idiots…

  15. Is this all ? there are lot of other bugs I don;t see in that log. How about the quets that still lay in quest list evene if they are finished (bard college for instance). How about that some companions often don’t react when we are attacked or they are attacked ? How about sound files missing for some NPC key characters for a quest ? How about that blade master guy , in Thieves sewers , who doesn’t open the door ? How about other tones quest bugs like these I told you about ?? You release a patch in which you solve just part of them ? Don’t you read what gamers say ? What kind of morons are you ?

  16. I just logged in steam today, and wanted to play Skyrim. I was excited when I saw that the patch is finally out, and I was eager, because I hoped it will fix my problems (Ill met by moonlight). When I finished patching, I launched Skyrim just to admit to myself after waiting 30 minutes that the main menu is not going to load. I did not have any loading problems before patch 1.4. Any idea to fix my problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam.

  17. Bethesda, do you know, for a brasilian guy, how expensive it is to play skyrim in xbox360.. I spend much money with you, so i waiting a minimum respect. Fix the bugs! We’re not having fun.

  18. See, I don’t really mind much that it’s being delayed (again), I care about WHY it’s being delayed. Is it problems with Steam? Are you just hammering out the kinks? I’m as frustrated as anybody, mind you. I’d have liked the Construction Set to be released when you said it would be released. So please, give us a set date, as best as you can (+/- a day is fair, by my books), and release it within that time frame.

    With that said, I’d like to say I’ve had little to no problems playing the game. I wish I could say the same for quite a many other players.

    -Forky

  19. One order of business I would like to cover here…I’m wondering about the people who are having exceptional problems with their game. By this, I’m pondering where you live, what platform you are using, and last but not least, the specs of your system (particularily PC). I have the sneaky feeling that the answer Bethesda may be seeking no doubt lies in the answer to those questions. I live in the USA, have a PC with the following specs: AMD 1090T X6 processor w/16GB DDR3 @ 1333 and Radeon HD5750 1GB GDDR5 for video. The game, short of my Windhelm problem has run 98% smooth with few complications. The Companions quest initially would not trigger but the patch Bethesda released fixed at least that much (as well as the backwards-flying dragons!). My point is that the source may not be so much the game as the platform, system specs, and country you are living in? Just a thought Bethesda, though I’m sure (or hoping I’m sure) that you all ready thought of that.

  20. I only wish Follower’s gear (which keeps growing, and growing, and stacking, and stacking every time you hire them back) was visible to the Xbox 360 player, so that we could delete or empty it… It is sooo annoying to hire your follower back and check that his/her ability to carry weight decreases every time you do so… Please, have this fixed.

  21. I think people need to stop whining like babies. The ONLY people that should be really complaining are PS3 players. The CK will come out when it comes out. It’s FREE and Bethesda DOES not even have to let us PC players have it. Did the game case say “The CK date is this or that?” Nope, it sure didn’t. You all should be thrilled that Bethesda even let’s us use the CK. It’s a huge game so yes it has issues. Get over it. Stop whining and if you really have to go take the game back if you can. Bethesda is doing a good job. You can always play a different game if the issues are that bad. I for one have only had the Esbern voice issue. All I done was wait a while, save and reload and it worked. Did I go crying about it? Nope. Like I said, PS3 players have the most issues.

    To Bethesda: Thanks for all the hard work. This player appreciates it.

  22. Why is my comment about the broken unstartable quest “a night to remember” not being approved, this is the one single glitch I have had the whole time, yet I feel like bethesda only cares about the whiners that complajn about minor things like bookshelves and audio glitches? That stuff does not affect an achievement like my one quest glitch that I have posted about probably 15 or more posts by now ,that is pathetic really, I still have not played the game since hoping this would be fixed but you guys are too busy with stupid bugs that do not break this game. Man up and fix the big things first that everyone needs fixed, are you kidding me, one of the fixes you are working on are to retexture the bread.. This is a well deserved insult YOU SUCK. That is just amazing to me how many small things are worried about but not a daedric quest I cant even begin for my final artifact for my achievement, really weak bethesda. :(

    • You have ONE problem n you wanna keep taking up space for it?! Wait until you have dozens, as many of us PS3 Players have. Then keep posting. Sheesh!

    • @Mike: are you playing on PC?

      Make sure the Skyrim.ini has this under [Archive]:

  23. hey beth

    next time you say your gonna fix stuff in your patch..make sure its fixed…

    actually, next time you release a game, make sure it runs properly. dont rush it just to make an specific date.

    ive had nothing but problems with the game on ps3. quests not starting, etc.

    i probably will not be buying another one of your games. waste of money when you clearly dont care about your players.

    did you guys all get together and say “hey lets spend a month or two fixing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with the problems and add things that no one really cared about in the first place…juuust to piss people off”

    thanks for wasting my time and money.

  24. So i’m not sure if people are having the same issues as I am (PS3) but this patch doesn’t fix these:

    -during “Forbidden Legend” when i try to enter Geirmund’s Hall the game “freezes” on the loading screen. It eventually turns black with the music still playing and the level bar is the only thing visible (the reason why i put freezes in quotations is because i dont believe its completely frozen but actually lagging EXTREMELY bad.

    -Embershard Mine won’t repopulate the bandits even after waiting 45 days (I need to kill the leader in order to become thane for Falkreath)

    -in the journal, i have an entry “collect bounty from skald” that won’t go away

    -an interesting note; the mannequins in Proudspire Manor are glitched (as we all know) however i put Morokei’s mask on one of them along with the entire set of the shrouded armour. i took off morokei’s mask…. walked outside….. came back in and the mask was STILL there…..now everytime i come back into the house and take the mask off and leave then come back a new one respawns…. i have like 8 masks…

    anyways if anyone can confirm this information or if Bethesda can let us know if these bugs will be fixed in the next patch, please don’t hesitate. Thanks.

  25. I’ve downloaded the Update 1.4 and I still can’t complete “Dampared Spirits” I can’t get maven to talk to me Please help

  26. Thanks for the fixes with lag and such! However, my main problem was that I couldn’t re-enter Reachcliff cave to do the ‘Taste of Death’ daedric quest. I was there before I activated the quest and cleared out the draugr. Now when I go there with Eola, I can’t enter. It is just an infinite load. So, restart the game on my PS3 from the previous save and have to skip this quest.

  27. Yup. My husband Marcurio disappeared during a Storm Cloak battle and I have no idea how to find him or where he could be. I checked all over the are where I lost him, to see if he died, but no luck. He isn’t our home or his original home, The Bee and the Barb in Riften. I’m not allowed to remarry because the game isn’t registering that he’s gone. Poo. He was strong too! Apparently this is a major bug in the game, spouses disappearing. Kind of funny.

  28. What about the bug with saving Thorald? ( on PS3 its impossible to save Thorald without killing everybody, the general says no to release him no matter what and there is no other way even with imperial armor… And the bug on Shalidor’s labyrinth… I cant activate de healing sigil and the illusion sigil… Even a level 60 mage apparently… Thanks bethesda!

  29. please fix the nightingale blade if you receive it while level 46+ it cannot be upgraded it does not show up in the menu when you try to upgrade please fix this

  30. Is there going to be a fix that addresses the follower Illia’s complete disappearance upon dismissal? She does not return to Darklight Tower…

  31. Is anyone else running into the issue of terrain and clothing turning a fluorescent purple? Then items displayed during loading are also this purple and sometimes the whole screen is wiped clean by this fluorescent color!? Whenever I see the color distorting things, I know the game is going to freeze and I always have to turn off my system (XBOX 360) and start again. UGH!! I also was approaching a Mammoth and it suddenly jumped high into the air, fell to the ground and died…..weird.

  32. Bethesda,

    I wish to add a potential glitch that you may, or may not, be aware of. Sometimes killed enemy NPCs, e.g. Draugr or bandits, will clip through the world in to the ground, forever gone (until they respawn I guess). Additionally, if a killed bad guy falls against a wall or a portion of the floor that is uneven due to, say, a mound of rocks or dirt, their bodies will be unable to be looted and/or selected. This can be quite annoying when said monster/bad guy is someone you need to get something off of them because of a quest. Also, I have also had dragons who die while in the air clip through the ground, instead of doing their “crash landing” death sequence.

    I noticed that this same clipping problem occurred in the initial release of Fallout 3 and was fixed in the first patch (me thinks). I know there is a good chance the programming team that worked on Skyrim is different from those that worked on F3, but the engines seem awfully similar to me. Perhaps they have a fix you can plug in, rather than pouring through all of those lines of code. :)

    Anyway, great game thus far Bethesda. If I may offer a suggestion for any game modifications that may be included in any downloaded content (DLC), please have some additional monsters to fight when we go exploring the different crypts. Fighting the same 3 or 4 level-dependent Draugr gets a bit old after the 8th tomb is explored. Cheers.

  33. I have a problem on the PS3, I don’t know if anybody else has it but ever since I was a werewolf I haven’t been able to zoom out into 3rd person. I can’t even see my hands or my weapon in 1st person mode. If anybody knows what to do to fix it please tell me…

  34. The Staff of Magnus
    I was really hoping that the glitch which leaves Mirabelle Ervine unwilling to send you off to the Staff of Magnus quest would be fixed. I regrettably have no savegame to revert to in order to restart ‘Revealing the unseen’.

    I apparently hit her with something while fighting Ancano. The Arch Mage is dead in the college courtyard, and nothing I do will trigger the Staff of Magnus quest to start.

    Quite annoying.

  35. Got the patch for the xbox and now it crashes and freezes all the time. Can’t even play anymore. The Stormcloaks weapons don’t show. Can’t save, it is unplayable!!!!! Please fix!!!!!!

  36. “Striking the heart” is still not possible to complete if you’ve already assasinated the Silver Hand leader earlier in the game…Which means that there’s no way to play through the Companions questline…baaah…

  37. Hello Bethesda

    Just to note the same glitch regarding Rjorns Drum as the flute in the Bards College quests. cannot off-load this item from my itineray, found the item before triggering the quest.The flute is similar but I triggered the task before discovering the item, cant off-load.

    Best
    G

  38. Really their is a whole list of fixed things but the one thing they should have fixed the whole bug with the theives guild which drove me to the point of not playing the game so yea

  39. It seems we have new problems with the new-released Creation Kit.. And incase I surfing every wiki for that problem and cannot find anything.
    I use every TES Construction Sets since Morrowind, Oblivion and use Garden of Eden Kit for Fallout 3. But first time I encounter such a problem in Skyrim Creation Kit.

    Yes me and my friends encounter a problem here it is;
    ” I use the Creation Kit and created a “esp” file with the kit. The Kit saves the esp file into the ol’ Data folder. ;) When the started the launcher, the Game Launcher does’nt recognise the esp file. And shows blank.

    I want to test the Creation Kit which for if my esp file is corrupted or not.
    So I downloaded some others Mod’s on Skyrim Nexus. and use this Mod’s esp file.
    The game Launcher does’nt recognize this esp also.
    So the problem is not the corrupted esp files.

    When I surfing on the forums, I encounter some dialogue that the Skyrim’s main game save folder may be corrupted.
    So I checked out the folder’s properties ( example; ” C:\Programs\Bethesda Softworks\The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim ” ) and if the folder is not checked “Read-Only”…
    But the problem is there even If I checked that the folder is not Read Only, After the confirmation the folder’s properties automatically reverse again as a Read Only..
    So the Game launcher cannot recognise all esp files into a game.

    Dear Bethesda you released the Kit so much later since the game release date. And yet the Kit itself is glitched.
    What is this Bethesda ? I want to believe you.

    If you want to say us (Modding Community) that “the modding is over” or not ?
    We wait 2-Long month to editing and modding the Skyrim and yet you released new glithes and bugs for us ?

    • Thanx to my friend “iDiru” on forums; Here the solution everyone;
      “I fixed this, actually, I think… I’m still having some small problems.
      This is what I did. For some reason if you save it to the data folder, it’s like, invisible. But the only place you can save it is to the data folder apparently. So, what I had to do, was move it…
      It’s kind of tedious, though. Save your ESP file.Close the creation kit. Reopen it. Click ‘save’ again. The esp file you just saved should be there. Right click it, then click move to> then documents.

      Close creation kit if you want. It doesn’t really matter at this point.

      The ESP file should be visible now, in your documents folder. Go to your Skyrim directory. Put the file back into Data. Skyrim should read it now.

      Make sure to check it on the data files though, when you start Skyrim. In the case that your data files button is greyed out, do this…

      You need to add that line in SkyrimPrefs.ini located in My document/MyGames/Skyrim or something. I don’t use win 7 so figure it yourself, pleasa ).

      Look for the line:
      [Launcher]
      bShowAllResolutions=0
      uLastAspectRatio=2

      And add it like this:
      [Launcher]
      bShowAllResolutions=0
      uLastAspectRatio=2
      bEnableFileSelection=1
      It really works everyone, the esp data’s will be viewable after this process. :)
      Cheers!
