Now on Steam: Beta Update for Skyrim (Updated)

Update 2/2: With the 1.4 update available, we have disabled the beta update. Thanks to everyone that participated.

Update 1/30: A third beta update (1.4.21) is now available on Steam. The update features one new change:

  • Fixed bug related to hitching between cell boundaries.

We really appreciate the feedback from our Steam Beta. We anticipate the 1.4 update going live this week for all on the PC and being sent to the console manufacturers. The Creation Kit won’t be far behind.

Update 1/26: A new version of the Beta Update (1.4.20) is now live on Steam. It addresses the following:

  • Fixed occasional audio issue that would play sound effects louder than intended
  • Master Criminal achievement/trophy unlocks properly in French, German, Spanish and Italian
  • Fixed issue where dragon priest masks would not render correctly
  • Fixed issue where player would be unable to become Thane of Riften if they purchased a home first

Original Post: Skyrim is using Steam’s beta functionality to give users an early look at the 1.4 Update currently in development.

What does beta mean? This patch is still in development. Apply the update at your own risk and only if you are affected by issues listed in the fix notes.

Be sure to back up your saved games or simply be careful not to overwrite your existing saves. If you decide to opt out of the beta program, your old saves will still work with the current release of Skyrim (v 1.3).

To get the beta, you need to do the following:

  1. Log into Steam
  2. Click on Steam in the upper menu
  3. Select Settings
  4. Under the Account tab, go to the Beta Participation section and select Change.
  5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Skyrim Beta.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Steam will now restart. After Steam restarts, Skyrim will be updated to the Beta version currently available.

If you decide you don’t want to run the Beta anymore, redo steps 1 – 4. At the drop down, select NONE – Opt out of all beta programs. Let Steam restart, and Skyrim will automatically update itself back to the latest released version.

To provide feedback on the beta update, use our beta forum.

  1. Skyrim is nothing else than a bugs festivals mess. I will wait until it is Golden GOTY with all expension and stuff. Bethesda still the same after all.

  2. oh i have an opinion about the latest elder scroll game first off why release a game when its gonna have soooo many bugs in it too start with? you would think before releasing a game they would work out all the kinks in it first make sure everything is gonna run smooth as silk and then release it out to the public for game play then shortly afterwards release new content for the game this way everyone is happy can someone explain to me why its not done this way ? youd think costumer satisfaction would be a number 1 priority for these gaming companies after all with out us the consumer who buys and plays these games at 60 70 100 dollars a pop or whatever would not get very far just my opinion folks

  3. I hope to see the updates for xbox soon. I am tired of carrying around a flute and a lute that I can’t get rid of, and having a mission I can’t complete for the stewart of riften who wants me to kill a dragon thats already dead. I also don’t want to find red eagles sword again. I already have red eagles bane and even that is not much of a weapon compared to the deadric sword I made with level 100 smithing skill. where are the really legendary weapons? I’ve even had to upgrade the deadric artifacts the Deadra gave me. send me Keenan and Sunder, and we’ll call it a day. That probably sounds like a lot of complaining, but I love this game.

  4. Great, at first they were saying. the new patch for Ps3 will come this month. And where is it? How long do we have to wait? My game is completely down because of all the bugs and the Updates, which made it all worse.
    I’m really dissapointed…

  5. First it was supposed to be released at launch, 4 goddamn months ago, then it was “By the end of January”. Here we are!

Sorry to say it, but to me, the land of Skyrim is bland, unimaginative, and uninteresting. Now give me the damn creation kit so I can make it interesting.

  6. Can we have a more specific release date of the Creation Kit, other than ‘not far behind’? Today? This week? Next month?…

  7. Awww you poor thing, I can’t imagine how horrible your life must be right not because of Bethesda, shame on them! Hang on there I’m sure your suffering will be over soon!

  8. PS3 Skyrim update. Well, you guys shouldn’t give us dates. Or at least lie about it (Extra month or so), so we don’t get all bloggy on you. Just saying.

  9. Wow. I just was checking for a date on dlc. Had no idea people were so OCD about acheivements and completing every single quest. I love this game! If I find a bug (blood on the ice) I move on. Just been decorating my other houses with weapons and stuff. When I’m bored, I’ll put the game down and go outside. When I return in the future, I’m sure I’ll have to wait for some patch to download and then my dlc that had come out, and let the journey begin again. So excited. Mostly because my patience will be rewarded much greater than anger.

  10. @Bethesda
    PC version 1.4
1: Mannequin’s still ends up in odd locations after a load or entering a home.
The “interact” area is where the mannequin should be, but the model itself can be at any random location in the home.

2: Game begins to lag tremendously after a few hours outdoors.
I guess this is because the game doesn’t clear up zones/cells visited.

3: Random dragon encounters when fast traveling.
    Dragons still won’t spawn.
Which I don’t see as a bad thing TBH.
Rather a feature which should be an option rather than a bug.
The dragons in or near the dragon nests are enough as they roam the countryside aswell.

4: NPC’s get stuck in their pathing and scripts.
    Whiterun market stand area.
Jon Battle-Born stands outside the Belethor’s General Goods 24/7
Carlotta Valentia and her daughter stands idly at Carlotta’s stand.

5: Fog and dust graphics creates FPS drops in some forts.
I haven’t been able to figur out a distinct reason for this, neither why Markarth makes FPS drop 50% of the time.

On a good note I haven’t had a CTD since 1.3, with 1.4 the days and dayspassed works.

  11. I have a request. I am a PC player and I have been stuggling with taking screen caps. I have a human and dog companion and I see them looking at my charater. I am sure this has already been addressed too, but would it be possible to have the pc able to look at others. He looks like a zombie. I used player.placeleveledactoratme 7 and see myself being able to look around but for whatever reason the original PC stares of into space like a zombie. Ulfric Storm cloak is saying something epic to me, but I just stare off into nothingness. I love Skyrim and am on my 6th playthrough with over 9000 savetimes

  12. How can you do get this if “Skyrim Beta” doesn’t appear as one of the options, the only option I have is just called “Beta Update”? Is this it? Where can you check what version of Skyrim you have?

      • Ah I started a new game and found that I do have 1.4 installed, it just hasn’t fixed the bug of my save files not loading. It worked fine until a couple of days ago, no changes of version had been made, no files had been changed, it even effected back up saves from before, which shows the save files aren’t corrupted. Out of the blue one day it just started. I get 1 or 2 seconds in to a save file’s loading screen and the whole thing crashes to desktop. I was absolutely in love with Skyrim, my first Bethesda game until then. Please please fix this!
