Skyrim lands on Conan O’Brien, front page of the Wall Street Journal

On last night’s episode of Conan, longtime sidekick Andy Richter shared a segment about his magnificent voice work for Skyrim. Too bad he wasn’t a member of the cast… apparently it increases your shot at landing an Oscar nomination.

Elsewhere, today’s front page of The Wall Street Journal includes a feature about players taking the peaceful/pacifist route when playing Skyrim. The article includes quotes from Todd Howard and Felix the Peaceful Monk creator, Daniel Mullins.

  4. I’ve been doing the same thing with my thief wood-elf and taking the Thieves Guild idea to the heart: do it clean and efficiently, no deaths. Turns out it’s much more immersive than just shoving a mace to everybody’s face.

    What I do want to know is… when is the CK coming out?

    • It feels like they are now just ignoring us, and pretend they did not promise to release CK this January at all, or pretend it is not end of January today, or pretend there is no CK, or I dunno what, but I am very very very frustrated.

      • We’re not ignoring you guys. We know you want the kit as quickly as possible.

        The current status remains: we’re working to release the 1.4 update on PC this week. The Creation Kit will come sooon afterwards.

        • I’m clinging to the hope that the reason the CK will come after the update, is that the update will enable some functionality that the CK requires.

          Quite frankly though, CK should have come first. Just as we did with Morrowind and Oblivion, we could have fixed your game for you, instead of waiting for fixes *and* the kit.

          And here’s a word of warning; if we hear *anything* about DLC before the CK is out…you guys are gonna get a whole lot of flak. People are getting very suspicious; we know how much influence (and money) the big console boys have at their disposal…

          • Agreed. This stains Bethesda Studios big time. It’s like a car company releasing a vehicle that gets defective after you drive it a few miles

            So “ignore” isn’t the right term. It’s more like they don’t car as much as the gamer.

            Personally I’d like to see them release it now rather than fix the things they are working on to get out in 100% working order. At least then you’d all have something else to complain about.

            People are mainly upset because Bethesda literally promised that the Creation Kit would be out in January. Definitely some impatience involved but the main point is that they shouldn’t promise their customers something if they can’t deliver.

          • CK is delayed not because they are fixing it, but because of steam integration that should come with 1.4 patch or something, that is still unready. So, this delay does not mean CK will be bugfree, unlike some think.

        • I wouldn’t mind the wait if you gave us a concrete release date and A REASON WHY IT’S DELAYED. Don’t promise it in January and act like we’re overexcited kids who can’t wait. You lied. Treat us like adults and give us some real info.

        • Make sure the navmesh gets fixed so it works in esps and not just esms…. thats been with us since Fallout 3 and makes AIs pointless in any mod because they bug out.

          Do that and I’ll be happy.

        • settle your anger, guys. a few days more are acceptable if they release a almost bugfree ck. i still looking forward to the ck, but i hope they realease a good ck.

          • Neo, I agree but what if we have waited for 4 months for an editor that has all the same bugs we have suffered with in Oblivion, Fallout and now skyirm….

            Thats been my concern from day 1… Beth have not exactly got the best reputation for fixing editor bugs and the Fallout editor was on its last legs, half the features just did not work and getting an house mod an AI could use was a 50/50 bug fest job.

        • Appreciate the feedback jtim2. We stated January because we felt we’d be able to make it this month. We were wrong, and we’re sorry for that.

          But it’s not far off. We have to cross some T’s and dot some i’s and it’s going to coming as soon as everything’s checked off.

          If there’s a point where the date is absolutely nailed down – whether that’s this week, next week, or after that — we’ll share the date.

          In the meantime, please use posts related to the Creation Kit for comments relating to the kit. We know you guys are anxious for the kit, but posting off topic isn’t going to make it come any sooner.

          • To me, you guys all do a great job. Especially you gstaff, given what you have to put up with on a daily basis. And as Much as love Elder Scrolls and want the CK, it’s just a game and I can be patient. So thanks for all you do.

            Also, I’m curious if there is something to the vid that won’t allow it to be viewed in certain regions. Doesn’t work for me.

          • By now the people mods are releasing uncompleted cause they don’t have the right tools to finish them cause of the delay of the CK, worse is something that should have came with the game, is the 2ond delay.

        • Just out of curiosity, is the fact that it’s part of Steam Workshop in any way contributing to the delays? if so we’d rather have it to work with now and a later version integrated into the SW. Most of us are perfectly content with using sites and communities such as the Nexus to upload our mods.

  8. Everyone needs to stop b*tching about the creation kit. Just be patient, it will come out eventually.
    I laughed my ass off when I saw this last night, i’m glad they added this for Skyrim fans to see. Too bad people are so worried about the creation kit they cant enjoy a bit of comedy.

    • Everyone was patient since 11.11.11, when found creation kit was not with the game, as promised, glitches and bugs were instead.

      • Except it was NOT promised with the game, and Todd was being exceedingly over-optimistic in thinking it would be out in November at all.

        Suck it up people. It’s coming. Just be glad this isn’t operating on Valve Time.

        • Actually, it is subject to Valve Time. Gstaff mentioned in the forums that they are “finalizing some stuff with Valve.” That could mean anything in terms of when the Creation Kit actually gets released.

          I also don’t understand the rabid anticipation for the Creation Kit. I’d rather see some progress being made – by releasing the 1.4 update.

    • agreed. everytime i read this blog its full of whining. i get a lot of that at home already with my 5 and 7 yr olds. this clip was funny

  10. I don’t think you even read what I posted. I have the PS3 version that i bought along with the guide on Midnight launch, but that has nothing to do with this article. I’ve had to deal with my fair share of problems as well, but I don’t go b*tching in the comment section and leaving unrelated comments. The talented team at Bethesda are going to release it when the feel it is ready, not when people leave comments demanding it be released.

    • And lets not forget its being tested by Modders from the modding community who are very interested in making it the best it can be so they and everyone else can use the Creation Kit to its fullest potential.

  15. There’s 2 type skyrim people,
    1: the new people that don’t care about the ck and think TES3+4 was too complex, thanks to them TES5 is just a pretty demo, totally toned down in comparison to previous titles.
    2: people that have played previous TES titles and know skyrim is a quick cheap incomplete release and want our whole game with the ck.

    Yes I am “whining” about the ck, those who don’t and think skyrim “is the greatest ever” never played morrowind and oblivion or they would know skyrim is a cheap cheesy release of a incomplete game.

      with morrowind I agree, but Oblivion SUCKED! Skyrim is MUCH better.

    • Actually David, having played and modded for both previous Elder Scrolls titles, I can say that Skyrim is a vast improvement on them in terms of richness of content, story line, complexity, ease of use and artistic vision.

      • Actually, story line sucks (Dark Brotherhood, for example, it doesn’t feel dark at all, no interesting characters, etc), comparing to oblivion, complexity and content…yeah, removed classes, 2 times less skills, 10 times less spells, removed spellmaking, etc, nice improve.

    3: The people who are just as frustrated as you with the wait for the CK and want it every bit as badly, but realize that getting angry about it won’t make it materialize any quicker and will only frustrate everyone even more.

    I hope Andy Richter will be signed up to play a ‘mystical’ mud crab in TES 6, or at least the ‘high five’ troll.

  19. I love the part where he said January got 7 days longer. Blew my mind. Prior to Skyrim’s release I considered Bethesda to be my absolute favorite developer, now I count them, along with activision and ubisoft, among those that see the consumer base as just a cow to be milked. Love how Valve somehow got their greasy hands on our prized CK. Way to sell out. I hear if you kick every PC player in the groin, it gets you an extra penny per game sold. Go ahead, try it.

I actually feel sorry for the folks at Bethesda, they’re obviously working hard to get the game up to scratch on all platforms and are trying to get the CK out for the PC users – just to have “fans” constantly moaning and moaning like some spoilt little brat. Guess what people, in the real world things take time and get delayed and aren’t as fast as following a hyper link. Get used to it.

    Most of the whiners probably won’t even use the Creation Kit to make anything useful.

    If I was Bethesda I would finish the CK, release a video of it being used but not actually release just as a punishment! :P

  26. I don’t watch Conan, but this made me happy. Also, thanks gstaff, can’t wait for the CK but I know you guys are doing your best. It’ll be like a whole new game for me when it’s released.

Skyrim has got to be my favourite game ever the views are amazing, the immersion is unbelivable and i want to thank bethesda for all their hard work. it annoys me when all i see online is people complaining, sure their games have bugs, but all games do. bethesda has given us a gigantic world and every square inch is the product of hard work and imagination and all you can do is criticize it.

    have any of you ever even considered that the CK is taking so long because they want it to work properly for all of you.

    last night i was playing skyrim and decided to go for a walk, i started in whitrun and just walked, i harvested a LOT of alchemy ingredients, killed 3 giants, found lucky lorenz (poor guy) swam in a river, went down 2 water falls, cleared a troll cave, found a bear in a shack then unded up at windhelm stables, i heard a man talking about his farm so i went to find it. i found a house full of bandits and had so much loot i was forced to drop some of it (my follower and i where both nearly at max encumberance so i headed back to breezehome to dump it all.

    my journey was the single greatest gaming experience i have ever had. thankyou

  31. To be fair, Bethesda didn’t have to even offer the construction kit (or creation kit or whatever people want to call it) at all. It’s not a part of the game and certainly not a requirement to play. Prior to Morrowind, such a beast was never offered.

    Yes, the kit was promised and yes, there was a vague deadline for when it would be released but, quite frankly, it is a freebie and not something you, the consumer, have paid for. There is absolutely no obligation to release it at all so be grateful that it’s even coming out for general use.

    In the meantime, there are plenty of mods that have already been released (and are continuing to be released) for Skyrim that can be found despite the lack of an official construction kit (including existing tools to modify your own game that are easy to use).

    No amount of belligerence, demanding, stomping of feet, or ugly posts are going to make the kit come any faster so save it. It will come when it will come and not before.

  33. I can’t believe how impatient people are. Sure Beth told us it would be earlier but things get delayed all the time. Look at Mass Effect 3, they said it was going to come out at the end of last year, and then they changed the date to around March of this year.

    I prefer it this way, because we don’t end up with a buggy product. And since many people constantly wined and complained about a buggy Skyrim on release, Beth are taking longer purely to stop these people whining. But then things get delayed and we have inpatient people who wine…

    The circle never ends… Also this is the Beth blog, not the Skyrim specific forum. Ofc theres going to be other things posted besides things directly related to the game!

  34. Come on, we waited skyrim for eleven months, one week or one month isnt going to kill anybody (Maybe it will soon though). Let’s let bethesda do their job and stop nagging about it… it just makes everybody’s day worse…
