Stealth Answers from Arkane Studios: AMA Edition

If you missed the Reddit AMA from last week, here’s some of the highlights, as well as a few new questions sent to us via Twitter and Facebook.

Reddit AMA

Q: Will there be a new game plus mechanic?

Arkane: While players do not have the option to restart the game with all powers unlocked (that seems to be the standard definition for “game plus” these days), replayability was a major focus for our team with Dishonored’s development. As fans of games like Deus Ex, Thief, and Fallout 3, we want the player to be able to approach the game in different ways each time they play through. As such, players will never be able to unlock all abilities or try every option in one playthrough.

Q: Can the game be completed with zero kills? How long would a total stealth play-through take (average, estimate)?

Arkane: Yes, you can complete the game without killing anyone. (It was a goal of ours.) And the world reflects that to some extent.

The game is about 12-24 hours in length. The variance there is related to how directly you play (vs side quests, exploration, etc).

As players we’re always trying to do things we didn’t do last time. Our programmers were all trying to do crazy weird variants this week. “The Falling Angel playthrough,” where you only kill by using drop-assassination.

Q:Is Dishonored open world, or linear with a variety of options?

Arkane: No, Dishonored is not open world, it is mission based. Each mission is built as a mini sandbox, so the missions are open and offer several paths and approaches.

Q:Can you tell us about how player’s actions and Chaos affect the world and narrative? Is it pre-scripted or more dynamic like low and mid-level gameplay?

Arkane: It’s a bit of both. For most players, the effects over the course of the game will be fairly subtle. The mission checks the current level of Chaos so far and the following can happen: More pools of rats, more people with the plague (weepers), lines of dialogue/attitudes changed, additional scenes here and there, and different endgames. Things like the rat pools feel like “mid level gameplay” as you say. Lines of dialogue are obviously a scripted reaction.

There are two main endings, but each has variations based on who lived or died.

Some of the Chaos effects are meant to be ‘felt’ more than overtly identified as they’re happening.

After the break, check out a speed run of new answers…

Q: Will you be able to use any of the environment, like vases, frying pans and the like as a weapon?

Arkane: Some of the objects you see in the environment are movable and can be flung at characters.

Q: Does the Outsider interact with Corvo throughout the game, as you complete missions?

Arkane: The Outsider shows up at various moments of the game, but not specifically as you complete missions

Q: Will you get any exp/achievements for “ghosting” missions? No kills, no alarms set, etc.

Arkane: Yes!

Q: Is dismemberment or decapitation possible?

Arkane: Yes!

Q: Will the PC version offer gamepad (360 controller) support?)

Arkane: Yes!

  1. Boycott the Quakecon, Arkane, Bethesda, id and Zenimax family!

They have games surrounded with bugs, glitches and they try split the bad cheese in parts?

hey fanboys! is time to try remember what is self respect!!

    • I’m talking about Bethesda Game Studios, not Bethesda Softworks. They’ve published a lot of subpar games: Rogue Warrior, Brink, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge.

      • i have no dedication in an academic way with the english language, in order to offer a perfect grammar. I do not care, it is not my native language. Sorry for this, put this visual agression who causes brain damage. Just joking, you have your point. ;)

My point here is to show my indignation as a consumer. The fanboys need stop feeding those companies.

  2. You should feel sorry for not buying their games, then. If more people had bought Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Arkane might still be independant today.

But as far as selling your soul is concerned, becoming part of a private company that is not traded publicly like Zenimax is way better than becoming part of Activision, EA or Ubisoft whose sole goal is not to create good games for gamers, but to create value for their shareholders instead by ripping off their customers.

  3. Harvey and Raphael,

There is a female gamer named peachtiny on the AMA Q&A who asked about your consideration for a female option when creating Dishonored. Unless I missed it, it looks as if her question was ignored. That’s your right but it disturbs me that she didn’t receive the courtesy of a reply about this issue since I’m a female gamer who was considering buying Dishonored. Playing as female in first person is important to me and those are the games I buy but for a great game, I could possibly play as male if I had to. Now I’m thinking I shouldn’t bother…not happy about that either.

    • Try to think about the time-frame/society that this game is set in. Women were second class citizens until relatively recently in history, and just because a different path was taken along the industrial revolution, you cannot expect that to have changed. A woman, in these times, would not have been charged with protecting the empress. A male character for, what is in this setting, a male’s job.

    • The story revolves around a specific person Corvo. I can’t play as a woman in thief because the main character is Garrett. I can’t play as a woman in Assassins Creed because the games revolve around the lives of various dudes. I can’t play as a dude in metriod because it revolves around Samus Aran.

Yes, I would like to see more female characters in games. but games main character is already written up and decided. They didn’t answer the question because it’s a stupid question.

When games have a female character option it’s normally games with more of a focus on RPG elements and character development where the main character will be left blank intentionally so you can fill it in.

  4. This might just be the best game of the year, from what we know until now, at least. Please make sure it’s released in good tech conditions and not riddled with bugs or tech problems. Cheers and congrats.
