Today marks the 15th anniversary of QUAKE II’s release on PC. Celebrating the affair, id Software’s Tim Willits shared some fun facts about the game:
- Only three artists made all the 2D and 3D art for the entire game.
- One of the original suggested names for QUAKE II was WOR, but the game’s fast-paced, tactile feel felt closer to a QUAKE game than a new franchise.
- ‘The Edge’ (Tim’s favorite deathmatch level in QUAKE II or any other game), has over 50 trick jumps possible in the map. Tim only designed two of them, and the rest were discovered by the QUAKE II community.
Later today, Tim plans to celebrate by taking these QUAKE action figures out of the display case and reenacting his favorite moments from the game. Let us know how you’ll be celebrating the game’s anniversary in the comment section below.

I’ll be definitely playing some Q2DM on TastySpleen!
Nice, I had two of those same Quake 2 figures from back in the day. Q2RA2 (Rocket Arena 2) and 3Wave CTF were the best modes to play. Loved being a grapple monkey in CTF.
Quake II is the best game in my life. I can’t explain what mean to me. If I have top3 … 1:Quake II 2:Redneck Rampage 3:Outlaws and DOOM
The good old days when Bethesda didn’t sell out its customers in exclusivity deals.
quake 2 was and stiII is a product of ID
I’ll be celebrating by playing through Quake 2’s Singleplayer for the zillionth time! XD
WAY back in ’97-98, these were the years I really cut my teeth in Multiplayer gaming; So many Mods, Plugin-Player Models & Maps – The era of Gamespy, Polycount.com & PlanetQuake.com! ๐
Whilst being an Aussie, this made me High Ping Bait to no end Internationally but this game was at its best when played in a LAN party! ๐
Quake 2 had a rockin’ Soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem & I was amazed the day I figured out I could play the Disc in my CD Player! \m/
The Singleplayer was just ridiculously indulgent; could never pull myself away from it & once I’d finally beaten the Jorg, I couldn’t wait to get a hold of the Mission packs but I also wanted figures of the Strogg and the late ‘Resaurus’ company made that happen! XD
Quake 2 was also the game that aided me in my push to get my Father to purchase a 3D Accelerator Card, a 3Dfx Voodoo 2 no less & thus Quake 2 was my 1st experience as to what could be achieved with Hardware Rendering. ๐
Happy Birthday Quake 2, you’ll always be my favourite video game alongside Doom 2.
Waiting for Quake II: Railgun Edition ๐
A grate game. It was the experience that defined my as a gamer for the coming years. A truly unique and everlasting gem.
Cheers “Quake 2” and Id team ๐

Thanks for the info!
I will be enjoying Quake II’s 15th anniversary by beating the game for the first time.
Willets needs to go. Well at least back to level design. He is a disaster as Creative Director.
I just have to say LMCTF was awesome. Colored lighting, gl_shadows 1. All great stuff.
I loved LMCTF. That was Laser Mine CTF right?
Remember Jail Break? Rocket Arena? All great mods w/ even better maps! Jail Break was probably my favorite. Q2 did so many things right. Should have put Q2 in a browser w/ all the cool mods, CTF/LMCTF/JB/RA/ETC
