Mostly compression and bigger textures sizes among a few stuff. If I remember right, games plays a lot better when they’re uncompressed.

“Note: We do not have a list of minimum requirements for the game. If you’re trying to play with a rig with settings below these requirements [b](you should plan to have 4 GBs of VRAM regardless)[/b], we cannot guarantee optimal performance.”

Iam pretty sure that its a mistake..it would be simply RAM there really..No way it needs 4GB of VRAM minimum!

So you’re telling me my 780ti won’t run this as it only has 3gb of Vram? If that is the case you must be the worst programmers in the history of gaming.

why 4gb VRAM ? can i run it with 2gb Vram or no?

  • Charybdisjim

Correct, even though it might seem counter-intuitive that larger resource files for textures and sounds could be less demanding.

As far as I remember it’s not as much an issue with textures as it is with audio – uncompressed textures allow for greater fidelity and better coloring more so than a flatout performance increase. That’s because the on the fly decompression in the graphics pipeline has actually become quite good and consistent without creating lag or synchronization issues with other processes. It’s not lossless though and detail and and color range I think are the most noticeable things that suffer for it (so blurry and with color differing from ideal dependent on what if any filters/skews might be used.)

That’s not as much the case with audio; calling+mixing+playing multiple audio components in real time and on the fly sees a a much more pronounced benefit from using uncompressed sources. While more storage and bandwidth is needed, the reduction in computational overhead allows for capable systems to mix many more simultaneous audio streams (sound effects, environmental loops, music queues) in stereo or 3d space in synch with the visual presentation.

This game’s also on last-gen consoles, weaker PC hardware should be able to run it. So this is just a shoddy port of new-gen? Thanks. I really love Mikami and would like to support him, but I’m gonna pirate this.

  • gstaff

You really should have 4 GB of VRAM to run it.

EDIT: Talking further with folks here, it sounds like you might be able to play with under 4 GB VRAM, but it’s still not recommended.

4GBs of VRAM? do you understand how stupid that sounds? is that a by product of the new way consoles handle VRAM? I guess you’re too lazy to port it properly to the PC.

  • Mark

4GB of Vram?! You just lost 90% of your total sales. Most people don’t spend 1k on a GPU.

  • Simplex

Why you should have 4GB or VRAM to run it? Seriously, WHY?
Do you realise how tiny percentage of gamers actually has 4GB of VRAM? I’d guess below 5% (if not less).
Do you know any other games that require 4GB of VRAM? (Crysis 3 which is a graphical masterpiece does not require that much).
Is such absurdly high requirement due to unprecedented graphical quality of the game (i.e. ultra high-resolution textures?) or rather due to taking the path of least resistance when porting from a console with unified memory? (watch dogs style)

  • Bob Loblaw

That’s not a direct answer… is it playable on 2GB cards? Even if only at low settings?

  • Silanda

So let me get this straight, you’re releasing a game with graphics that don’t appear to be any better than comparable titles, running on an engine supposedly designed around the concept of texture streaming, yet it demands an amount of VRAM that 1.64% of users on Steam have? Firstly, are you insane, and secondly, how exactly have you managed this?

  • gstaff

Talking with folks on the team, you can give it a go with 2 GB VRAM, but it’s definitely not recommended. As mentioned in the blog post, we’re not posting minimum requirements, because we’re looking to share requirements that show the game the way it was meant to be played.

  • Remi

    4GB of VRAM…

  • Bob Loblaw

Not posting minimum requirements (when that’s standard practice for PC games) makes it look like you’re hiding something – ie, that it’s a badly optimized port that will be barely playable on all but the highest-end systems.

How is the options menu different from Wolfenstein the new order?

Will be able to change shaders, shadows, texture quality, ect?

In wolfenstein it was somewhat frustrating how we got very little options, and the game basically forced you to run on high

Either way, I’m very excited for The Evil Within

  • proto

well that is nice, but you probably forgot that very few people has high-end rigs. according to steam statistics like 1-2% users has 4gb+ Vcards. what’s the point to release this on PC in this case? ='(
please guys, you still got some time, try to make it run decently with at least 2gb Vram.

  • Robert

How did they come up with 4gig Vram? Ryse looks 10 times better and only needs 4gig if you plan to run it at 4k res at max. Not even Crysis 3 needs this.

Are they using 4k as standard or something? If so please say so cus most people dont use 4k monitors, let alone 4 gig cards. 4gig mainstream cards just got released like 3 days ago. Maybe nvidia is cutting you in to push cards?

Don’t fob us off on the “It is intended to be a next gen experience” bullshit either! No proper reply = badly optimized port! Releasing something like this where 1.2% of Steam users only have 4gb vram is pretty dumb is it not?

The funny thing about this is, even with these insanely stupid VRAM requirements the game apparently has, the textures still look like low res horseshit. Just get rid of idTech 5 already. Every game you’ve put out with it has looked atrocious–even Wolfenstein’s great lighting couldn’t cover up the fact that it had some of the most horrendous textures in any modern game. Hell! The textures for Wolfenstein looked worse than modded RtCW: http://imgur.com/a/1SMrN

So the horror of console unified RAM raises its ugly head in case of PC ports. Some guys at video cards forums predicted more than a year ago that unified memory of consoles might hurt PC ports badly, and the funny thing is the next-gens are said to be so close in architecture to PCs. As Simplex above said it’s Watch Dogs style – it’s the same case – you couldn’t run the game smoothly at ultra texture settings with TWO GTX 680 2 GB VRAM even in !!!SLI!!! because of the 2 GB VRAM.

  • Mako

What you need to do is make the game with a default vs high quality setting. That way those who dont spend $1000 on a video card to play this game can still enjoy it at a lower setting. Sounds to me, judging by how you mention this, that you say a 4G VRAM is minimum but the rest of the specs arent really equivalent in respect to the VRAM on the card in question. So tell me when you say 4G of VRAM……why do you not mention more specifics much less give test examples to support the gameplay difference. Instead of losing your business for the PC gamers show them video quality for 2G vs. 4G VRAM. I’m pretty confident my 660ti PE can handle the game despite only having 2G VRAM. Without seeing any tests to support the recommendation of 4G VRAM its safe to assume it can still be played with equal enjoyment for the general playerbase. Thanks in advance for the reply.

  • mohi1989

Also you should know how to make a game (the way it’s meant to be made) not porting it from consoles which have a pool memory, most PC’s have much more RAM than VRAM. unless there’s a great performance work on the game to fix this issue, this game is gonna have really really bad reviews!!

  • Mark

So wait…you guys are saying that a 700 dollar 780ti that runs laps around console GPU’s is not recommended for this game? What is this a joke? The textures look nowhere near demanding enough to NEED 4 Gigs of RAM that is a joke. It looks like the same shoody low res textures of previous Id Tech engine games. Unbelievable.

  • Zero

95% of PC gamers don’t have these required specs. These requirements are absolutely unrealistic, Bethesda seriously needs to comment on this and figure something out.

The comments from the Bethesda employee saying he “talked with team members and they don’t recommend playing with anything under 4GB VRAM” is very worrying and to be honest, ridiculous.

  • Mark

BS! Is a 780ti not ‘next gen’ enough? Please tell us again how one of the fastest cards in the world can’t handle your game. The textures look dreadful just like all Id Tech 5 games. This is a joke. This is not a next gen experience. Not even Crysis 3 required anywhere near this amount of VRAM.

Isn’t posting minimum requirements a legal requirement? Besides that, Bethesda say they only post recommended specs for the optimal performance, yet they release the game on PS3 and 360… If what Bethesda said was true then the game wouldn’t be released for them as they are the sub-par experience, what a load of bull. I won’t be buying another Bethesda title again and this outcome sure has encouraged people to pirate the game to “demo” the game.

    Absolutely pathetic.

    BETHESDA ARE YOU INSANE ?
    WHAT THE HELL !!!

The recommended specs are crazy and unjustifiable !!

    1) 4.0 GB VRAM graphic card ??
To play the game at what resolution exactly??

Playing a game at 1080p resolution does not really need so much VRAM unless if you your specs are about playing the game at 4k resolution…

    2) 50 GB of hard drive space what the hell !!!

  • Not going to buy it with these recommended requirements

Bethesda do you really think that PC gamers are millionaires wasting all their money to expensive hardware ??

The recommended specs are just crazy and awful !!!

Even some of the most expensive graphic cards like the GTX 780Ti has 3GB VRAM and you are asking for 4GB VRAM ??

Most gamers will avoid buying your game you should rethink changing your requirements to something more logical according to what PC systems most people have right now if you want to make some sales with this game….

The specs, more specifically the VRAM requirements, are so unbelievably upsetting. I never pre-order games, but I had a 25% off coupon and decided to bite the bullet. I wish I hadn’t. What was once a game I was REALLY looking forward to is now just another letdown and disappointment from a AAA developer. I’m sure you’ll make your numbers back, congratulations, but hopefully a lesson is learned from all the angry and upset customers in this thread.

If their profit depended on the PC release they would be in ruins.
Obviously the PC release is not their priority.

They claim that the PC release will be a “next-gen” experience (whatever that means theses days), but one thing I am 99,9% sure: this game is not optimized nor balanced regarding hardware usage vs. graphics quality on the PC version, by any means.

They probably just cranked up the graphics with amazing ultra 4k 8k abillionk resolution textures, requiring a shit ton of VRAM, so they can sit there and say it’s the ultimate experience and never-before-seen-graphics and try to gain the Crysis franchise reputation for their amazing graphics and high resource demand.

    Just lol.

  • Alex

  • Helder Jefferson

Actually, acording to Steam, just 1.64% have a GPU with 4gb of ram, so maybe 2% with 4gb or more. Thats really low. They’re aiming at just 2 million players.

  • Ryan

Pre order canceled. I won’t support sloppy PC ports of games. 4GB of VRam is absolutely insane.

  • LostCanadian

Settle down people – the “recommended” specs are always high. I’m sure the game will still run with 2 or 3 GB of VRAM, but you’ll have to turn down the settings. If you really want a next-gen experience, there are 7 or 8 graphics card models out there with 4GB of VRAM…so it’s not like there aren’t any options.

Personally, I think it’s awesome that they’re targeting high-end visuals instead of just aiming for the lowest common denominator. I wish more PC games would do the same.

Ive been thinking about upgrading to an i7 4790/4770, i want a 980 but i dont know if i have to get one. I have a ps4, but my PC crushes XB1 exclusives, like DR3 runs at 1080 30fps supposedly better textures, XB1 DR3 is 720. Titanfall i think its 792 on XB1, its 1080 max settings with my custom PC, i think i may be able to play ryse 1080 max settings, i think its 900 on XB1. So why wouldnt i be able to play The Evil Within on 1080, thief has high specs but again im running it at 1080 with high settings and i get 60 fps. So why wouldn’t i be able to run this at 30/60 fps max settings 1080? I asked tech support by e-mail about it and they said to mess with the settings untill i upgrade. What? LOL.

So you’re saying a GTX 780 Ti can’t run this? A $730 video card that was up until a few days ago the most high-end gaming card money could buy can’t run your game? That’s beyond pathetic if true. Was this programmed by monkeys?

4GB of VRam is a ton, especially since it sounds like its basically a minimum requirement even for 1080p. Its pretty crazy that one of the requirements is something that the majority of people don’t have. They seem to be shooting themselves in the foot with that one and drastically limiting the amount of people that can run this game.

I have a couple thousand dollar PC that benchmarks “Better than 96% of all results”, but both my graphics cards are 2GB. Pretty insane that apparently my rig can’t handle The Evil Within, especially considering it doesn’t look like its doing anything special.

It makes you wonder why that requirement is there to begin with. It certainly sounds like they took the path of least resistance to spit the game out on PC and hope to make some money before people realized the port wasnt up to snuff. Obviously we won’t know until it actually comes out, but its enough to get myself and others worried enough to not want to pre-order and let others take the chance first and report back with results.

Well I have to admit that there is quite an lot of unrest from so many fellow gamers all around this comment section, however to all those complaining about how high these requirements are do allow me to point out the fact that the post specifies that these are the “recommended settings which should offer optimal gameplay” from the developer’s point of view, so chances are that you will be able to run it on a lower system setting as well (given that your computer isn’t older than a newborn infant, of course :P ). Also do take into consideration the way in which this game looks from the trailers and try to understand why the 4GB are so direly needed for that extra scare flavor, after all the game is supposed to look good cause otherwise it just won’t get the job done. Yeah and guys, great work with it I do hope it will amaze me even more when I finally get to play it!

so, Sir. if I buy a MSI Twin Frozr Gaming OC GTX 760 4GB VRAM the game will run smoothly as intended, as opposed to MSI Twin Frozr Gaming OC GTX 770 2GB VRAM although it’s a faster card, for sure?

Plz kindly reply, sir. your reply will determine my purchase on my new VGA. I really want to play this game coz it looks like a survival horror I’ve been dreaming of, and been following the news since the first announcement. I don’t care about other games.

    Thank you.

Having 4GB VRAM remains the recommended way to go. If we have any updates, we’ll let everyone know.

Thank you for the swift reply, sir. GTX 760 4 GB VRAM it is. I reckon GTX 760 power is between GTX 670 and 680, and the recommended VGA is 670, so I think I’ll be able to play it smoothly, as the game is intended to.

I’ll purchase the new VGA after the game has been released, and people’s reviews are out, just to be safe. I hope things will get better and the dev team’ll be successful in fixing and optimising the PC version to the fullest. there’s still time until release, around 2 weeks.

    Thank you.

    Sir,

Can you please be more specific ? I mean saying “4gb vram or get out” is extremely vague.

Could you please specify what resolutions and settings are you expecting at 4gb vram requirements?

I mean i know you want me to buy a gtx 980 but … they are kinda out of stuck so please cut me some slack. I’ll buy one later! Pinky swear!

lol pinky swear. sadly my budget is stuck at below $300. the only choice I have for a card with 4GB VRAM is… 760… hope this’ll run smoothly without any hiccup… plz…

my monitor is the standard norm 1980×1080 60 fps, so my target is to play smoothly at that resolution at 60fps. I ask for no fancy hardcore gaming, no, sir. 4GB VRAM? I’ll buy, I’ll buy. 760 that is. wallet restriction.

feeling kinda sad to not buy a faster 770 (but with 2 GB VRAM) which only $20 higher in price. but I’m dying to play this game, now.

I got to admit i have reservations about getting the gtx980 now since it only has 4gb and the 8gb veraion should be out soon. Shadow of Mordor and this game requirements have given me the chills about the reckcless use of vram by developers. It worries me that 4gb wont last long.

I’m so happy I didn’t preorder this! 4gb of VRAM? LOL

Don’t even release the game on PC if you’re not going to try. Seriously. Pathetic. I’ve lost a lot of respect for both Bethesda and Shinji Mikami. I’ll keep this in mind in the future. I’m also trying to get the word out now that the PC port is apparently unplayable for >98% of PC gamers.

I ordered the evga sc gtx 980 from amazon, hopefully evga step up program will bail me out when the 8gb version comes out.

But as i said before they are out of stock and they dont seem to have an estimate delivery yet. I hope it arrives before this junks comes out.

Hallo i and others are interested to know the Minimum specs to even run this game, idont care recommended, do u think all gamers today are made of money and sit on uber i7 rigs and video cards with 4gb ram that according to steam hardware less then 2% have ? come on…. why even release it for pc if its for such a small amount of people that will be even able to enjoy it since u say 2gb cards u can give it a go.. lol.

Wow… Was really looking forward to this game, but it seems like a 780ti isn’t enough to run it or atleast not recommended., so I guess I’ll just cancel the preorder. A shame really, looks like an awesome game.

Judging by the comments here and on reddit, you guys are in for one hell of a ride once this game comes out.

    Recommended PC System Specifications

    64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8 [Checked] (8.1 and soon 10)

i7 with four plus cores [Checked] (i7 + 8 cores)

4 GBs RAM [Checked] (12 GBs RAM)

50 GB of hard drive space* [Checked](1TB but need to do some free up)

GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM (Mine GTX 670M with 3GB, now here’s the problem, i’m just 1Gb of VRAM behind)

If this turned out to be a lazy and Unoptimized PC port, things will be messed up with that requirements)
