To coincide with the newly announced updates to the Skyrim Workshop, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is going to be more accessible than ever. Freely accessible!

If you don’t already own Skyrim, between now(4/23/15 @ 1pm EST) and Monday at 1pm EST, you’ll be able to download and play the base version of Skyrim as much as you want for free. You can even download free mods from the Workshop to enhance your experience.

On top of being able to play for free, this weekend we’ve got some pretty big savings on all content for Skyrim. Deals include:

  • Skyrim Legendary Edition – 66% off/$39.99 or $13.60

Note: To be able to access paid mods, you will need to own a copy of Skyrim.

  1. There’s something ironic about endorsing the monetization of previously free mods and then posting an announcement titled you can’t beat free.

  2. So it’s going to be:
Of course a base game and a must-own DLCs
Skyrim – 3.74E (FREE till Monday, YAY!!)
    Dawnguard – 7.39E
    Dragonborn – 7.39E
Hearthfire – pass on this one :<

and a few mods to start with

    Ultimate Performance Mod – 46.99E
More immersive Sleeping Giant Inn – 73.49E
Epic Helgen Bear Overhaul – 91.99E

    TOTAL: 230.99E

Err… i think i'd stick with Oblivion for the weekend O.O"

  3. This is one of the biggest pr disasters since the PS3 Skyrim fiasco.

Nice going Bethesda. Also, I’m not going to buy any future titles made by you.

  4. If this is the future of Bethesda games I don’t want to be a part of them. You’re destroying the magic of the modding community. The last bastion against greed and mindless paid for DLC.

It’s a sad day for me. Been around since Daggerfall. Now I’m done

  5. This is a very controversial step. PR will be a nightmare and I don’t think it was a good move. While I do understand that you wanted to show support to the modding community, this may not be the best way to do it.

I do think people need to keep in mind, that while this allows for paid mods, it does not mean all mods will have a cost. I’m sure most reputable modders will keep their mods free, while supplying a possible donation link for those who wish to show appreciation for their efforts.

At first I was angry with this, and while I’m still against it..I’m not about to jump ship till I see what evolves from it. It won’t be directly Bethesda’s fault if people start charging, that will be a choice each modder will make for themselves.
