QuakeCon 2014 – Special Events Schedule

We’re less than two weeks away and to get you ready for QuakeCon, we’ve got a look at this year’s schedule of events.

Highlighted earlier this week, our sneak peek at the next DOOM game is an exclusive perk to attendees of QuakeCon and starts at 6:00pm. Give yourself time to get lined up for a 6:00pm start, as you won’t see it anywhere else.

Beyond DOOM, developers from ZeniMax Online Studios will be on hand at QuakeCon to let everyone see what’s coming next for The Elder Scrolls Online. A special panel, The Future of The Elder Scrolls Online will take place on Friday, July 18th at 5:00pm on the Ventrilo Main Stage. Senior members of the ESO team, representing a variety of disciplines, will discuss plans for short-term and long-term future content, approaches to addressing player feedback and suggestions, bringing ESO onto consoles, and more. The panel will be followed by a Q&A and the first 3,000 attendees will receive a free copy of The Elder Scrolls Online! Get more details at www.elderscrollsonline.com!

Attendees can also check out “Designing the Perfect Game”, taking place on the Ventrilo Main Stage on Saturday at 5:00pm. Join Chris Kluwe (former NFL punter, co-author of Genesis: Prime), Rick Malambri (actor, Step Up 3D), and Matt Grandstaff (Global Community Lead at Bethesda) as they work together to design the perfect game. Moderated by Andrew Reiner, executive editor at Game Informer Magazine and co-author of Genesis: Prime, the panelists will work together to design a game concept which will be judged by Feargus Urquhart (CEO of Obsidian Entertainment). After the panel, attendees can weigh in on the game design and provide feedback and reviews. The first 1500 attendees will also receive a Bethesda t-shirt!

Throughout the show, aspiring artists can also visit the id Software booth in the Exhibit Hall from 12:00pm – 2:00pm to meet Hugo Martin, id Software’s Art Director, for an art portfolio review. Amateur or professional artists who want feedback and career advice should bring their portfolios to the event for this unique opportunity to meet with an expert in the field of film and video game art.

Additionally, at the Bethesda booth in the Exhibit Hall, fans will have the opportunity to play The Evil Within, the new survival horror game from legendary director, Shinji Mikami. Pete Hines providing ‘storytime’ keynote for PAX Australia

Since our first trip to Seattle back in 2008, the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) has been a favorite event for many of us — especially Pete Hines. Be it Boston or Seattle, Pete’s always looked forward to showing off our games, participating in panels, and finding some spare time to play MtG at the show’s tabletop area.

Lucky for Pete, he gets an extra taste of PAX in 2014. At the tail end of our launch week for The Evil Within, Pete will be provide the ‘storytime’ keynote for PAX Australia. It’s sure to be amazing. You can always call on Pete for an entertaining story from his 15+ years with Bethesda — one that started with Morrowind in ’99.

PAX Australia takes place in Melbourne between October 31st and November 2nd. If you can make it, be sure to say hello to Pete.

Learn more about PAX Australia in the press release after the break…

Around the Web – Swede Interview Edition

What’s new on the web? Plenty!

With Wolfenstein out for more than a month now, Giant Bomb’s Patrick Klepek caught up with MachineGames’ creative director, Jens Matthies, for a must-read interview. Topics covered include: what it takes to make a Wolfenstein game, spoilers [alert!] about the ending, and what’s on the horizon for MachineGames.

Here’s an excerpt…

Giant Bomb: So you actually liked the idea of trying to resolve the potential contradictions in the story you wanted to tell with the legacy of the storytelling in Wolfenstein?

Jens Matthies: Yeah, of course. We want this to be part of a greater saga. That said, of course, this game stands completely on its own. It’s not a requirement that you play anything of the previous games. You can be completely new to Wolfenstein and have a complete experience. But we also want to build upon things that have been established on their own.

Who else is putting their post-mortem wrap on Wolfenstein? The Escapist. One of the site’s feature writers, Shamus Young, shares his surprise in how great the game ended up being — drawing comparisons to Valve’s Half-Life 2. Read Shamus’ article here.

Going from what’s already out to what’s coming later this year, we move to The Evil Within. And with The Evil Within at E3, you also get plenty of face time with Shini Mikami. Read a pair of interviews with him at both Metro UK and Telegraph.

Previewed in a dark room, we had to be careful not to make players scream at the top of their lungs as we strolled by. Below are some E3 highlights…

Official Xbox Magazine – “… it could be the modern Resident Evil that fans like me have been waiting for.”

Platform Nation - “Bewildered by the blank wall, I turn around and the hall goes all hazy, riddled with static, and then the doctor and patient disappear after the kid gives some sort of creepy psycho premonition speech. The hallway ends at a door that wasn’t there before, and the other side appears to go on interminably. It’s disconcerting to say the least.”

USA Today — Watch a new video preview with Pete Hines.

Closing out our wrap up, read impressed impressions from folks that tried BattleCry Studios’ self-titled debut. Among recent previews, USA Today ranked the game as one of their Top 10 game of the show. Previews below…

Quest Gaming Network – “Fast and fluid, pretty yet gritty; BattleCry Studios seem to know what their doing, which is no surprise with vets from all around the industry in their ranks.”

Tom’s Hardware – “BATTLECRY in its present state was a blast. A number of us played as the Cossacks while another set played as the Royal Marines. Because there is no gunpowder in this alternate timeline, players must rely on melee and basic ranged weapons such as swords, bows, energy-powered blades and more. That made the gameplay feel a bit more personal and frantic.”

USA Today – “It’s a fascinating approach for an online multiplayer game, which anyone with a headset and public chat settings enabled will tell you is sometimes a hostile experience.”
