This week I’m hearing left and right how great Battlefield 1943 (Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network) is, and from the looks of it, a bunch of guys at the office are going to be waging war this weekend. Hopefully I can squeeze in sometime with the game once I get back home Sunday — if not, I’ll be enjoying some great new iPhone games, including Drop7.

New dev profile on Splash Damage site

Splash Damage have a new developer profile up this week profiling Brink Character Artist Linus ‘Lanyo’ Lidberg. Rather than sharing a bit from the interview, I’ve included a sneak peek at the intro written by Steve ‘badman’ Hessel. Amazing!

“Joining us from a clafoutis baked by the gods of Mmmmmm and Oooooh comes Linus “Lanyo” Lidberg. Constructed from cross-braced slipware transoms linked by stringers larded with goat pemmican, Linus can upon occasion be utilised as an atlatl, that is to say, woomera, even though he is himself pelekyphorous that is to say axe-bearing. Upon occasion, he imitates the fearsome abatis, or knapps flints to the applause of the watching, waiting, whistling Production Otters. After an hour-long eisteddfod, it has been established that he favours the chorabates over the groma. Phew. Close, huh?”

What we’re playing

This week we had a pretty heated battle for the featured game of the week. DOOM Resurrection and Prototype were popular picks, as was the already featured Plants vs. Zombies (hint hint, devs). Since DOOM Resurrection was already blogged about this week, my plan was to showcase Prototype (which I can’t wait to play) — until Ryan Lea begged me in the team meeting to showcase Personal Trainer: Walking for the DS. To quote Ryan, “This should win just because it’s that awesome! It measures steps per minute and your life rhythm! I’m not even sure what that last one is…”

Given that I walk about four miles to and from work each day, I think I’m going to check it out. Next week I’ll go back to picking a title based on the vote count…unless someone bribes me.

Meet Brink’s Lead Animator

Over at Splash Damage‘s site, they’ve got a new developer profile. This time around, they’re featuring Brink’s Lead Animator, Fabrice ‘faaab’ Bouvet. Fabrice went to school at Les Gobelins (an animation school in Paris), worked on Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and is a big fan of Quake. What we’re watching

As for this week, I asked folks at the office to share what movies, TV shows, sporting events, etc. they’re watching. No surprise, there’s plenty of variety. HBO shows (True Blood, Carnivale, Flight of the Conchords, and Six Feet Under are mentioned) seem to be quite popular for beating the summer heat. In the end, True Blood received the most votes to be featured. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s on Sundays at 9 pm on HBO.

We’ll also highlight what QA Project Lead Ruben Brown is watching. Today’s Ruben’s last day at the office, so we all wish him well.

What we’re playing

Between a trip to London, a DLC release, and the id announcement, I got so busy I forgot to post last week’s “What We’re Playing.” So without further ado, here’s what the guys were playing (as of last week). From the emails I got, the game that got the most votes for the “featured game” was Ghostbusters, which I plan on checking out when it’s available in our game library.

Mike Dulany, Programmer (terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought): Ghostbusters.

Chris Esko, Programmer: Ghostbusters, Red Faction: Guerilla, the acronym-tastic XBLA : MtG : DotP.

Liz Beetem, Artist: Playing a lot of Prototype because I have to hurl these pedestrians to safety away from this zombie hoard. Oh god, they hit a helicopter, oh god I’m sorry. Here I’ll catch you I just have to run through this crowd top speed with my meatshield art turning everything into a red mist. Oh oops, oh god I’m sorry again.

Starting with Brink, there’s lots to share. With the help of Steve ‘Badman’ Hessel, we’ve got a Facebook page up for the game. Join the group here.

In news, PlayStation Insider put together their E3 Wrapup, where they included Brink among their list of titles they wish they could’ve played. Here’s what they said:

“The first thing I said to myself when I sat down and watched the demo of Brink is this: ‘this is the only other game to look as good as Uncharted 2.’  Yes, Brink really does look sharp and it stands out.”

Moving on, GameShark interviewed Creative Director Richard Ham and Senior Game Designer Ed Stern at E3 to find more about the game. Here’s a sample:

GS (B): So my question is, for every class is there one specific action, multiple actions or is it still being worked on?

RH: First of all, it’s very much an RPG-Lite. As you’re earning levels and leveling up there’s a lot of new abilities you can unlock. You can choose to focus only one one class or spread out amongst all of them, but at any given point, right now at any given point, there are way too many things you that could be doing depending on what class you are, and right now we’re kind of limiting it to six.
