Having spent most of last week on the road, I wasn’t able to spend much time on my laptop — so now I’ve got a bunch news to share.

WET, is just a week away from release, and there’s oodles of coverage to read up on. We’ll begin at Major Nelson’s blog, where the game’s demo had a strong debut on Xbox LIVE — coming in as the #8 most-played game.

At Talking About Games, there’s an interview with WET’s Creative Director, Patrick Fortier. Here’s a quick look:

What sort of research was done to prepare the team to make this game? Was that you guys we saw wall-running between semis on the Los Angeles freeway?

Patrick: There was a long pre-production period to this project.  Every element of the game first came to life through concept-art and appropriate research.  Obviously old 70’s movies really inspired the graphical look of the game, but we also looked at more old school action games in terms of capturing the spirit of gameplay we were looking for.

Mr. Fortier also appeared on last week’s GameHounds Podcast and in an interview at Xbox 360 Asylum.

Weekend Update: Todd Howard interview, GamesCom coverage, and more

I hope everyone’s having a glourious weekend. Here’s some news and info I thought I’d share.

G4TV caught up with Todd Howard at QuakeCon last weekend. Above you can watch the interview, as Todd touches on the future of  The Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3 content on PS3, and Zenimax’s recent acquisition of id Software.

A couple of interesting blog posts at Destructoid. They caught up with Emil Pagliarulo (briefly) for a feature they did on “What the armor says.” Meanwhile, Ben PerLee had a chance to play WET this past week. Here’s an excerpt in which he discusses the game’s soundtrack…

“I’ll say it plainly: this soundtrack is really good, and my favorite part of my hands-on with the game. It’sfilthy hot.”

Plenty of news continues to surface for Brink. You can read previews at GamePro, ingame.de (translation courtesy of Google), and TotalPlayStation; as well as new interviews with Paul Wedgwood at Atomic Gamer and QuakeLiveTV (via YouTube).

Also out of QuakeCon, Team Xbox has a new interview for RAGE with Stephan Martiniere. Meanwhile, VG247 has an interview with Todd Hollenshead.

Finally, a new review for Mothership Zeta is up at Console Monster. Here’s a snippet…

“As always with the DLC developed for Fallout 3 by Bethesda, the depth and attention to detail is fantastic. There is a wealth of enjoyment to be had and Bethesda has truly shown the world how DLC should be designed, developed and distributed.”

Elsewhere, Crispy Gamer has a feature on 50 Things to Do in the Capital Wasteland. It’s an interesting list with some helpful pointers. How many of the 50 have you done?

Artist Megan Sawyer sent me this blog post, Excerpts from the Secret Diary of President Eden, which definitely made me chuckle. Here’s an excerpt:

“2277 August 27 – I’m pretty sure that Colonel Autumn is conspiring against me. I know because I read his lips while he was talking behind a glass partition. Am I upset about this? Not really. More like just sad. Disappointed that my government is so weak. Maybe if we had a legislative and a judicial branch, there would be a balance of power, and stuff like this wouldn’t happen. Haha.”

Oblivion available ‘On Demand’

The first batch of Xbox 360 ‘Games on Demand‘ are up on LIVE today. Among the games you’ll be able to download is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion at a cost of $29.99.

In case you’re wondering — your old saves will work — whether previously played Oblivion or Oblivion Game of the Year Edition. Additionally, DLC purchased off Xbox LIVE will work with the ‘Games on Demand’ version of the game.

Time to make the donuts for another update…

Wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow night at 6pm EST, X-Play is hosting their G-Phoria special – an awards show on G4TV where the awards are voted on by the fans (YOU!). Tune in to see if Fallout 3 (or any of your other favorite games) take home an award.

You may recall a few weeks back 1Up’s Scott Sharkey wrote about the Crappiest Videogame Dads. This week he’s back with a feature on the five videogame enemies he feels bad for — a list that includes Fallout 3’s Feral Ghouls. Here’s a look:
“I didn’t have too much trouble capping the guys, until I managed to acquire a ghoul mask, which allowed me to pass among them and observe their empty lives like a zombie Jane Goodall. Kind of left me wishing I hadn’t spent the first half of the game pinning their heads to the walls with railway spikes. I got over it, though. Go cry, emo zombie.”

Moving right along — with Mothership Zeta’s release this week, reviews are beginning to show up online. Here’s an excerpt from G4TV’s review:

“As a combat mission, “Mothership Zeta” is excellent. It’s fast paced, full of enemies, and great for loading up on XP. I finally hit level 30 about two-thirds of the way through. You won’t just be fighting aliens — abducted ghouls and raiders can also be found in certain sections of the ship.”

Wrapping up this “Around the Web,” I thought I’d share some id Software news. First, at TeamXbox, you can find plenty of new details on the multiplayer component for Wolfenstein — due out this month on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Meanwhile, the Twitter page for RAGE has announced there will be a video blog for the game — and it will start during QuakeCon next week. Head here to submit your questions.

Weekend Update

Here’s some of the latest online coverage — in case you’re having a slow Saturday like me.

If you haven’t checked out Drakortha’s Fallout 3 fan videos, definitely give his channel a look. His latest video, The DC Chronicles Ep 3 – Tunnels (above), is quite entertaining.

Sites continue to look back at Fallout 3. GamesRadar includes Fallout 3 a a feature about games from 2008 they can’t stop playing. Meanwhile, Geek.com has their own look back.

Gamasutra has a new interview with Ed Stern — Senior Game Designer at Splash Damage for Brink. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

Kris Graft: What about accessibility? You guys have a background in hardcore shooters, but I’ve always thought that something like Valve’s Team Fortress 2, for example, is a shooter that somebody who’s not good at shooters can still play.

ES: Well, that’s why we hired Richard Ham. He was one of the co-creators of Syphon Filter. He put The Sims on the consoles, which as far as I’m concerned is a superpower. That is a certifiable achievement. And he just finished Fable 2. He is brilliant at taking a system and making it easy to get into.

In WET news, Play Magazine has a new feature on Gaming’s New Girls — featuring the game’s lead character, Rubi Malone. WET also gets a mention (as does Rogue Warrior) in a new BBC article discussing Hollywood stars becoming involved in gaming.

In id Software news, in preparation for QuakeCon 2009, there’s a new YouTube video with CEO Todd Hollenshead making wagers with the QuakeCon Girls. If you’re attending the show, you’ll be able to find out who wins the best. Elsewhere, WebDesignDev has a list of the 30 Most Influential People in Programming that includes John Carmack on the list.

Mothership Zeta Trailer and Team Diary (Updated)

Before Mothership Zeta launches on Monday, we’ve uploaded a new trailer. Check it out on our site or through our Bethesda Softworks YouTube Channel. Special thanks to Matt Killmon for all his awesome work on all our DLC trailers.

We’ve also got a new Team Diary from Fallout 3 Lead Artist Istvan Pely, who spearheaded Mothershp Zeta. In the diary, Ist discusses what went into making this “far out” DLC — detailing the hard work and countless hours put in by members of the team. Here’s an excerpt:

“And with that begins the Vault Dweller’s final and most fantastical adventure in the Capital Wasteland, or rather several hundred miles far above it. The concept of the UFO visit emerged early in the idea-toss sessions we had for DLC, in fact it was the very first thing to pop into my mind; it just seemed a natural fit. But we saved it for last, as a fitting conclusion to the Vault Dweller’s story.”

Updated: Polish site Polygamia.pl has a Mothership Zeta interview with Brian Chapin. It’s in both Polish and English. For consistency’s sake, I’ll post the snippet in English…

We know that the main quest in this add-on will be to escape from the spaceship. How many side-quests and achievements can we expect from it?

BC: There aren’t any explicit side quests, but Mothership Zeta is a pretty big place. While you’ll be receiving three of the four achievements from completing the main quest line, you’ll have to do some searching off the beaten path to get the last achievement. And it’s worth exploring just to see everything that the aliens are up to — they’ve been doing some pretty strange things.
