Weekend Update: New interview with Emil at Gamasutra

This weekend at Gamasutra, there’s a new interview with Fallout 3 Lead Designer Emil Pagliarulo. Here’s a peek at it:

And due to the nature of the world, there are times when you can inadvertently run into a clue or mission that most people probably won’t find until later in a quest line.

Emil: Oh god, yes. That was a decision we made. If the player wants to explore, you can actually cut out probably 10 to 15 percent of the main quest by finding stuff early, like the dad character. The first quest is geared toward finding him, but if you go off and explore, you can still run into him.

Broken Steel gameplay on X-Play

Tonight on G4TV, the X-Play crew premiered the first footage of Fallout 3’s third DLC, Broken Steel. On their site, see the extended edition of Adam Sessler’s interview with Todd and Emil. Keep in mind there’s some minor spoilers, especially if you haven’t completed the main quest.

Broken Steel hits Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows LIVE May 5th.

Happy Friday everyone! Here’s some stuff from around the web you can check.

We start with an X-Play interview from last week’s GDC, where Todd and Emil look back at Fallout 3 , discuss the game’s strategy guide, and briefly mention design goals for future projects. Check out the embedded video above.

The Pitt’s been out for more than a week, and there are plenty of new reviews. Wesley Yin-Poole recently put up his review at Videogamer.com. Here’s a snippet:

Eventually the five or six hour experience evolves into a more traditional Fallout 3 quest than Operation Anchorage ever was. There are plenty of NPCs to interact with, one or two funny moments, some intense action, vibrant and atmospheric environments and plenty of interesting choices to make. At one point you’re forced to battle for your freedom in an irradiated arena Gladiator style. The big decision at the end is, unlike many in Fallout 3, a choice between two disturbing outcomes. Throughout much of the game the right and wrong answers are obviously distinct. Here it’s the same, but at least you’re made to feel a little uncomfortable by both choices.

In case you missed these, here’s plenty of stories you can read up on…

At last week’s GDC, Emil participated in two events. On Wednesday, he joined Shadow of the Colossus/Ico creator Fumito Ueda (Team Ico) and No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda (Grasshopper Manufacture) for the developer panel “Evolving Game Design: Today and Tomorrow, East and West Game Design.” You can check out some of their discussion at Shacknews. Additionally, on Friday, Emil had the keynote for GDC’s Game Career Seminar. There’s a pretty good recap of the address here at Gamespot.

In case you didn’t already know it, The Pitt takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of the Steel City. With the news of a game taking place in their town, Pittsburgh Station KDKA talked with Jeff Gardiner about the game’s take on the city.

Last week IGN Australia held their awards for the best games of 2008 — where Fallout 3 captured the IGN Select Award for Game of the Year, as well as Best PC Game. The game also received Runner Up honors in several categories — including the all-important Best Widow Maker category.

In our final update on the March Mayhem Developers Showdown, we bowed out of the competition after losing a very close matchup (51% to 49% ) to Turbine. You may recall that Turbine ousted us in the Final Four of last year’s showdown.

It’s been over a week since we last gave an update from around the web, so there’s plenty to catch up on.

We’ll begin with IGN, who are currently counting down The Top 100 Game Creators of All Time. We’re excited to see that Todd made the list at #70. Here’s a snippet of what they had to say about him:

“Where most designers tend to think in terms of simplicity and economy, Howard’s games have been defined by a staggering sense of scale and immersion that few others can match.”

The list is still ongoing, but there’s some of names worth mentioning. Morrowind/Oblivion composer Jeremy Soule cracked the list at #86. Meanwhile, Fallout fans might recognize a few other names on the list, including Feargus Urquhart (#89), Tim Cain (#85), and Chris Avellone (#80).

Sticking with developer news, if you haven’t seen it already, Todd answered questions for G4 while at this year’s D.I.C.E. Summit. In the ten minute interview, he discusses The Pitt, answers reader questions, and more.

Emil is in the news in a few places, too. At Edge, he was honored in their Hot 100 Games Developers list (#17). Meanwhile, a new feature on storytelling in games features him as well. You can read that here.

Around the Web: D.I.C.E. wrap-up edition

The 2009 D.I.C.E Summit wrapped up on Friday and there’s a few more interviews and Pitt previews that you might want to check out.

Fallout 3 wins two AIAS awards

Last night at the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences handed out their awards for the top games of 2008. Fallout 3 received awards in two categories — winning Best Role Playing Game and Outstanding Achievement in Story — Original. On hand to accept the awards were Todd, Istvan, and Emil. If you’d like to watch a replay of the show, IGN has a stream of it, and IFC will be airing it later this year.

In other D.I.C.E news, Todd lectured today at the event. His talk, titled “Great Games are Played, Not Made” finished earlier today and you can find recaps at several sites — including IGN, MTV Multiplayer, and Gamasutra. Wish I could have seen it — I hear the LOLcats were legendary.

A double dose of Emil

Looks like I get a chance to to use my “Emil Card” image again, as there’s two news items to share on Fallout 3’s Lead Writer.

First, at Gamasutra, there’s a new feature titled The Gamasutra 20: Top Game Writerswith Emil making the list. Congrats to Emil and all the other amazing writers that made the list.

In other Emil news, it was announced this week that he’ll be keynoting an upcoming Game Career Seminar at GDC. The seminar will take place during the conference on Friday, March 27.For more details, check out the news story at Game Daily.

Here’s the latest online coverage for Fallout 3.

As we mentioned a few weeks back, PC Gamer named Fallout 3 as their 2008 Game of the Year. If you weren’t able to pick up the issue, you can now read the remarks written by Todd Howard and Emil Pagliarulo over at GamesRadar.

This week, Fallout 3 was nominated for two Game Audio Network Guild’s awards. The game was nominated for Best Use of Multi-Channel Surround in a Game, as well as Best Use of Licensed Music.

In DLC news, there’s a couple things you can check out. If you’re a Game Informer subscriber, you can read a new interview with Jeff Gardiner on their Game Informer Unlimted page. In the interview, Jeff discusses both The Pitt and Broken Steel. Elsewhere, Area 5 share their thoughts on Fallout 3’s first DLC, Operation: Anchorage, in a new video podcast.

Finally, here’s some new modding news from Planet Fallout. This week Blinzler has two new State of Modding Interviews this week — this time with Mr.SlackPants and Joefoxx.

Welcome back for another edition of Around the Web.

We’ll start today at 1Up, where they’ve got an Afterthoughts interview with Emil. In it, Emil discusses design decisions, inspirations, as well as some things you might not have known about the game.  Here’s an excerpt:

1UP: The first time you played the game all the way through, what kind of character build did you use?

Emil: I’ve played the game at the office so many times, with so many different characters, at so many different stages of development, that I honestly can’t remember the first! But I do remember one of my favorites. I’d made this guy with Tag Skills in Science, Energy Weapons, and Speech. And every time I hit a option in dialogue, I would take it. It actually took me several hours of play before I looked at my character — and his suave little moustache — and then it hit me…I’d inadvertently created Tony Stark. I’d been playing the whole game in the role of Tony Stark, and hadn’t even realized it.

In Emil’s interview, there are a few references to the upcoming DLC. For more DLC discussion, check out WonderWallWeb, where there’s a new interview with Jeff Gardiner. Here’s a quick preview:

Can you tell us a little about the experience players will have in Operation Anchorage and what situations they will find themselves in?

Jeff Gardiner: The player will be tasked with taking the main Chinese stronghold outside of Anchorage.  Along the way they’ll pick up new weaponry, and even get to command a small strike force of their choosing.  They’ll be able to pick what type of team they’d like to create, and then how to utilize them in succeeding in their objective.

Speaking of Operation: Anchorage, it appears news of the DLC has made its way to Alaska by way of the Anchorage Daily News. I have to wonder what some residents of the Land of Midnight Sun had to think when they read the introduction.
