Original Post: This year’s Game Developers Conference is underway in San Francisco. Last night BGS level designer Joel Burgess discussed Skyrim in a panel titled Pursuing Elegance, and tonight, the 12th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards will be announced.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is nominated for five awards in tonight’s ceremony, including Game of the Year, Best Game Design, Best Technology, Best Visual Arts, and Best Audio. If you’re interested in cheering the game along, you can watch Gamespot’s livestream beginning at 6:30 PM PST.

On the subject of awards, you can still vote for Skyrim in the BAFTA GAME GOTY award category. BAFTA winners will be announce next Friday.

Double the Fun with the Fallout 3 & Oblivion Double Pack

On April 3rd, BGS fans can pick up the award-winning classics, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3, in a new double pack combo. Available in North America, the Double Pack will be available on Xbox 360 and PC for $29.99 and $19.99, respectively.

Remembering Adam

Last week our dear friend and colleague, Adam Adamowicz, passed away. Adam touched the lives of everyone that knew him, and his spirit will live on in the games we create.

This week we put up a page so that everyone — family, friends and fans alike — can visit and remember him. The page includes memories and reflections from the team, plus a comprehensive collection of his work on Oblivion DLC, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. And as the introduction notes, you haven’t seen the last of his work.

We also encourage you to “squeeze the nun for service” by donating to the American Cancer Society.

With Adam’s passing, I’ve spent some time going back and looking at some of the stuff we’ve done with him — here on the blog, on The Bethesda Podcast, and elsewhere.

G4TV — Not long after Fallout 3’s release, G4TV learned about Adam’s work as a concept art. Watch the video above.

Fallout Official Site — Before Fallout 3 launched, we did several developer diaries. In Adam’s diary, he shared details on how his inspirations for the game’s vault suit, creatures, weapons, and more.

The Bethesda Podcast — A few weeks before Skyrim’s launch, Nick and I did a podcast interview with Adam and his longtime friend, concept artist Ray Lederer. No one at the office knew Adam better than Ray, and you can read his reflections on his personal blog.

Bethesda Blog — Adam did an early Inside the Vault interviews for Fallout 3. Even today, it’s a hilarious read. After I posted it, he emailed me and asked me to add this picture. I thought he was nuts, but I’m happy to add it again.

Skyrim takes home five AIAS awards

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences held their award show last night at the DICE conference, and Skyrim took home five trophies, including Game of the Year.

The awards are voted on by the 20,000 members of the AIAS. In addition to the top honor, the distinguishments included Best Story, Role-playing/MMO Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction.

Congrats to the team!

Skyrim 1.4 patch live on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

Update 2: The PlayStation 3 patch is now live in North America.

Update: The update is now live for PlayStation 3 users in many European territories. We expect the patch to hit US users later today. If we hear from Sony, we’ll let you know.

If you’re encountering any strange in-game behavior immediately after applying the patch, don’t be alarmed — this is a normal function of the script backlog temporarily correcting itself. For more information on this, and how to speed up the process of PS3 performance enhancements, please read this forum post.

News on the Creation Kit and Game Updates

It’s been a few weeks since our last update on Skyrim’s status, so we wanted to share details on what we’re working on.

The Creation Kit and Steam Workshop are nearly ready. We’re currently working with members of Valve and our modding community to do some final testing, and we’re on track for a public release near the end of the month. We think Skyrim modding is one of the game’s best features, and we have the best modders of any game. It’s been a lot of exciting work for us, and we can’t wait to unleash it.

Skyrim’s 1.4 update is currently undergoing testing on all three platforms. The update will include fixes and optimizations for the most common issues people have been reporting (see below). We’re hoping to finalize this next week, and submit it to the console manufacturers for certification, as well as release on PC.

Our current update plan for the PC is to first release our updates as “beta” versions through Steam. This is something you’ll be able to opt into through Steam and back-out of if needed. This is an extra safety check for everyone going forward and should expedite and improve our updating process for our PC users. We’ll have more info soon on how this will work.

Echoing what we said back in December, we’ll continue to look into issues that are being reported and subsequent updates will follow. You have all supported Skyrim in a huge way, and we’ll be supporting all of you, and continue to make the game better.

Todd Howard announced as Keynote Speaker for DICE 2012

Today the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences announced that  Todd Howard will be the keynote speaker for this year’s DICE Summit. Taking place in Las Vegas next month, DICE is an annual summit that brings developers from around the industry together to discuss their work and the game industry as a whole.

Industry Visionary to Share Insights from Over 17 Years of Experience

CALABASAS, Calif. – January 10, 2012 – The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) today announced that Todd Howard, Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, will be its opening keynote speaker at the 2012 D.I.C.E.
