Here’s some news/stuff I found around the web that you’d be interested in. To start off, I suppose I should explain the image above. A bunch of guys on the team forwarded me this image, originally posted in the Something Awful forums by Drinkfist. All I can say is…wow!
In news, Fallout 3 has received recognition in a few more “Best of 2008″ lists. AP writer Lou Kesten ranks Fallout 3 as the #1 game of 2008. Elsewhere, GameSpy and GamaSutra both announced the game as their top PC game this year. Here’s a excerpt from the latter:
“The sheer amount of content in Fallout 3 is extremely impressive, considering what a consistent level of quality it maintains — and how much of it a player is likely to completely miss, based on the choices made, the NPCs killed, the routes traveled, and any number of other variables.”
Fallout 3 made several other lists — including ones found at Blast Magazine, Wired, Telegraph, and MSNBC.
With the release of the G.E.C.K. last week, more sites are beginning to report on the modding scene for Fallout 3. We’ll be following the developments closely, but for now, you can check out some recommeded mods at UGO and MTV Multiplayer.
Finally, BGS forum member OblivionRulez let me know about a community contest held at the German Fallout fansite, Fallout-HQ. The contest had three categories — comics, wallpapers, and fan trailers. Currently, the winner of the fan trailer competition can be seen here at GameTrailers. Nice work!
Today in both the UK and the US, an update (v1.10) for the PlayStation 3 version of Fallout 3 went live. The patch adds Trophy Support, fixes Friend Notification issues, and also fixes a number of other issues reported within the community. When you boot up the game, you should see a notification to download the 24MB update.
Again, the update is presently available only for the English PS3 version of the game in the US and UK. Updates for other PS3 territories, as well as Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, are on their way — right now those are in the final stages of being approved. When we have more news, we’ll let you know.
Yesterday GamaSutra posted a story (originally from Game Developer magazine) entitled Game Developer’s Top Deck 2008. This “deck” highlights members of the game development community for their work in 2008. Making the list as the 10 of Diamonds is none other than Fallout 3 Lead Designer Emil Pagliarulo.
So what makes Emil a diamond? According the feature, diamonds are reserved for Progressives that “implement brand new ideas in game development, perhaps branching in unexpected yet compelling directions. Alternatively, you can simply make what already works, work a whole lot better.”
Yep, that sounds like Emil.
Today we released the G.E.C.K. (that’s Garden of Eden Creation Kit) for Fallout 3. As the official editor of Fallout 3, the G.E.C.K. will allow you to create your very own content for the PC version of Fallout 3.
To help you get started, members of the team have put together a wiki for the G.E.CK. Whether you’re new to modding or not, we highly recommend you check out our tutorials, entitled “My First Vault Tutorial Series.”
To go along with the tutorials, we’ve put some helpful videos together to help walk you through the process. Above is the first video on Layout — you’ll find the other eight after the break. GamesRadar has a new feature on their site comparing the real world sites of Washington, DC to screenshots taken within the game. If you can look past all the destruction, I’d say they look pretty similar. There’s no ducks in Fallout 3, of course.

It’s been a while since we posted something about Tamriel Rebuilt — an extensive Elder Scrolls mod project that has community members rebuilding the whole continent of Tamriel one province at a time.
The TR team recently celebrated the the beta release of Map 2: The Antediluvian Secrets. According to their site, Map 2 is a continuation of the Telvannis region. The map is massive; containing over 580 exterior cells and more than 420 interior cells.
We tip our cap to the Tamriel Rebuilt team for their continued work on this project. For details on Map 2 and more, be sure to check out their blog.
Yesterday Planet Elder Scrolls announced its November Hall of Fame mods for both Oblivion and Morrowind. Congrats to all the modders — including Vality7, who was inducted for two Morrowind mods. Here’s a quick look at the newest inductees:
- The Neverhalls by Vality7 and Midgetalien: A dungeon mod inspired by Oblivion’s Ayleid Ruins.
- Vality’s Bitter Coast Mod by Vality 7: The plugin adds many more trees to the Bitter Coast to give the region a more dense atmosphere.
- Castle Almgard by Mr. Siika and Centurion: A new buyable castle Southwest of Anvil.
- Elegant Vests by Kafei (shown above): Divine Elegance in the Imperial Market District gets new threads — including new vests, gloves, and leather pants (yes!).
- RealSwords — Khajiit by waalx: RealSwords adds 100 new swords, sabers, daggers and knifes into Oblivion.

Back in June, BGS forum member Fliggerty arranged a Morrowind modding competition aimed at encouraging newcomers to the game’s ever-popular modding scene. With the success of the competition, he started up a second invitational, which runs through January 5, 2009.
Like the first invitational, this one centers around making a house mod. But wait — there’s new categories and rules. Interested? To find out more, head to the Morrowind Mods board.
With this week’s Elder Scrolls Modding Interview, we’re checking in with UK talent Timeslip…
How did you get involved with the Elder Scrolls modding community?
I have my uncle to blame for that, for leaving his copy out on his desk when I was visiting. I borrowed it for the evening, and a few lost hours later I’d already decided I was going to buy my own copy the next day. As it turned out, I was lucky enough to get the very last copy that my local games store had in stock. On installing it, I spotted the data files option in the launcher, visited the Elder Scrolls website to try and find out what it was for, spotted the modding forums, and things went downhill from there.
Until then I would often pick apart the data files from a game to see what I could change, but this was the first time I’d heard the term ‘modding’, or put any serious effort into it. I have to say that I’ve never regretted it for a second. Modding Bethesda games has become as much a part of the fun as playing them, if not more, and I specifically bought Oblivion and Fallout 3 with modding in mind.

Big news today! In a press release this morning, we announced the official editor for Fallout 3. Called the G.E.CK. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), PC gamers will be able to mod Fallout 3 to their heart’s content. The G.E.C.K. will be free and available for download next month. More details to come.
We also announced three downloadable content packs for Fallout 3 — beginning with Operation: Anchorage, which will be available for download on Games for Windows LIVE and Xbox LIVE in January. In February and March, we’ll be releasing The Pitt and Broken Steel.
Below are descriptions for all three DLC packs:
- Operation: Anchorage — Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
- The Pitt — Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
- Broken Steel — Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.
