Mod of the Year Contest

Since it’s the end of the year, everyone’s talking about their picks for Game of the Year (right now I’m torn between Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Halo 3, and Everyday Shooter). In similar fashion, over at Mod DB, they’ve already kicked off the nomination process Annual Mod of the Year Awards. Looks like there are some great prizes for the winners: Gaming Rigs, Logitech prizes, cold hard cash, and more.

You can nominate a mod from one of our games (Oblivion, Morrowind, or Star Trek: Legacy) or one of the other games listed…it’s all good (Fallout 2 is even a choice). To give an example of how to nominate a mod, first head to this link. You’ll see that you can select a game from the drop list that says “Any Game.” For example, if you select “Oblivion,” you’ll get a list of choices. For example with Oblivion, if you click on the first choice, NPCs with Jobs, you’ll then go to a page that has a “Vote for Mod” link at the bottom…it’s that easy.

New Hall of Fame Members at Planet Elder Scrolls

It’s coming a little late, but we thought we’d give a shout out of “congrats” to the following modders that achieved “Hall of Fame” status over at Planet Elder Scrolls for the month of December.

Harlequin sword and bow resource by Phijama: Adds 4 katanas, 2 bows and 1 two-handed sword to the game.

Kirel’s Interior Weather by Kirel: Allows you hear the exterior weather from inside buildings.

For Oblivion

Loading Screens Themed Replacer by Trollf: Adds new, unique loading screens for the game.

Qarl’s Harvest by Qarl: Adds new harvesting options and brings apple and orange trees (see above) to Cyrodiil.

Book Placement by Erik Peter: Improves the way you can place books on a shelf.

Mod Interview: AlienSlof

For this week’s mod interview, we’re talking with AlienSlof, who is known for her numerous contributions to the Elder Scrolls community — whether it be her Goth Shop mods or her tendancy to help other modders in the community.

A resident of Leeds, when Slof isn’t modding Morrowind or Oblivion, she works as a freelance professional artist. In her spare time (away from modding), she’s also an avid fan and collector of anything related to Giger’s Aliens (yes, those nasty creatures that battled with Sigourney Weaver). Hmm, I suppose that explains why her online name has “Alien” in it.

New Elder Scrolls Mods

Welcome back to another update about the Elder Scrolls mod universe. While I was away for Thanksgiving, I received a handful of messages regarding new mods made by you!

For Oblivion, The Priest sent me an email about an expansion mod he has been working on called “Gates to Aesgaard: Episode 1.” The project, which has been in the works for the last five months, is described as an “action/horror quest” where your character will confront “an ancient twisted evil, well hidden in the ages, through a journey in time and space and the hellish kingdom of the ‘Cursed Ones.’” Talking more about the project, The Priest claims the project doesn’t follow the norms of typical RPGs, and also that folks can probably expect a second episode in a few months. Midgetalien talks about modding Morrowind

This week we’re talking with Morrowind modder Midgetalien. Hailing from the UK, he’s a 19-year-old studying Ancient History and Archaeology. I asked him if he had anything interesting to share with the community, Simon (that’s his real name) claims he has no fingers on his right hand.

Here’s what he had to say about his modding experience.

How did you get into modding? Can you talk about the first mod you ever worked on?

Why did i get into modding? I don’t really know, I guess that i liked the idea of being able to add new content to the game. When I first joined the community I made loads of requests for, what I now see as really small details (such as adding soul gems to a merchant), then someone said “hey why not do it yourself?” It kinda grew from there.The first mod i ever worked on was a personnel Balmora Expanded mod. Theres a couple out there already but they were not what i was looking for. I never released that mod because it was so buggy and conflicted with way to many others. I may go back and change it. After that my first public release was Vampire Lair. Currently at version 4 it is unstable and instead of fixing those bugs i am working on a complete new version starting from scratch. Calling Skycaptain for a Mod Interview

This week’s modder interview is with Aki Teliö, also known as Skycaptain within the BGS forums. The 24-year-old from Finland is studying Engineering in the Helsinki University of Technology and, like myself, is a strong supporter of frisbee golf. As he puts it, “It’s a perfect past time hobby for a student, I like the fact that anyone can have fun playing the full 18 ‘holes’ without any experience at all, but the more you learn the more you find out there is to it.”

Of course, when Skycaptain isn’t studying for frolfing, he’s spending time modding Oblivion, hence the interview.

Star Trek Legacy Aftermath Mod Reaches Stage 2

Elder Scrolls Modding: House Building and Dirty Streets

Here’s a few cool Elder Scrolls mods that you might want to check out for yourself over at Planet Elder Scrolls, as well as details relating to a new contest over at Oblivion Real Estate.

While many modders try to replace textures to clean up the look of Oblivion, Elioden Ward has decided to use his modding skills to trash the city of Bravil. With the “Dirtier Bravil” mod (shown above), the town of Bravil has been touched up to have a dingier apperance to go along with the lore of the city. Hey, is that the Potomac River?

Moving to Morrowind, Catherine799 has uploaded her first house mod for the game. Her mod, the Balmora Treehouse, seems like a place that Frodo or Bilbo Baggins might take a keen interest in, as the home located in Balmora is actually a home built from a tree.

Speaking of homes, if you’re into modding your own for Oblivion, you might want to check out The Oblivion Real Estate’s MORE Challenge. For those that missed this post, Oblivion Real Estate is a site dedicated for modders that have worked on creating new homes for Oblivion using the TES Construction Set. The competition is to build a house using only architecture from the MORE website. You can enter by signing up on the thread at Oblivion’s Real Estate forum (you’ll probably have to join to see the page).

The contest starts on November 15th. For more details, visit ORE.

Mod Interview: Talking with Morrowind Modder, Connary

This week we’re chatting with David Molinero, better known in the Morrowind modding community as Connary. For a living, Molinero works as a freelance digital illustrator; work that includes doing scenery layouts for books and television spots. In the last year, he also spent time participating in some amateur videogame development. When he’s not working, he likes to “get lost, preferably in a fantasy world.”
