E3 Roundup: Point Lookout previews

We conclude our E3 Roundups for the week with a look at previews for Fallout 3′s latest DLC, Point Lookout.

We’ll begin at Planet Fallout, who sent one of their members, Ixon, to E3. Here’s an excerpt from his preview:

“The locale was also visually stunning. I would relate it to a darker version of Coney Island after lapsing into disuse for about eighty years. As you pull up, you get an overlook of the dock area of the main landing for Point Lookout and can easily see the mansion in the distance. The rustic look permeates everything about it and though I didn’t get a chance to see it, the swamp areas are supposedly to be incredibly creepy.”

E3 Roundup: Brink

Behind closed doors at our E3 booth, Splash Damage’s Paul Wedgwood demoed the recently announced Brink. There’s been plenty of coverage on the game — here’s the rundown…

We begin at GameStooge, where after seeing the demonstration, it was declared their Best Game of Show. Here’s an excerpt from their preview:

“Finally, the look of the game is amazing, even in its pre-alpha state, using a proprietary engine Splash Damage dubbed “Virtual Texturing”. The Xbox 360 version featured detailed character models that looked like something Pixar or Dreamworks would release these days; CGI modelling with detailed features such as wrinkles and hairs, but stylistic and smooth.”

Several more accolades have already been announced for the game following E3.  Like WET, Brink was named as one of the Top 15 Original IPs to Debut at the Show by Crave Online. Additionally, PC Pro declared Brink one of the 10 Biggest PC Stories from E3 2009, Xbox 360 Achievements named it their Surprise of the Show, and NowGamer included the game in their Best of E3 list.

Like what you’ve heard about Brink? You can vote for it in the Best Shooter category in Voodoo Extreme’s E3 2009 Reader’s Choice Awards.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty of new preview coverage from our theater presentations. At 1uP, Eric Neigher wrote:

“Brink looks like the next logical evolution of Splash Damage’s Quake Wars, with a bit of Mirror’s Edge thrown in. While the version we saw was pre-alpha, if the final version stays the course with its aesthetic and gameplay elements, Brink looks to be an innovative and exciting addition to the multiplayer combat-game genre.”

E3 Roundup: Rogue Warrior

While I didn’t get a chance to attend E3 this year, folks at the office were abuzz about Mickey Rourke’s visit to the booth to promote Rogue Warrior. If you missed it, Rourke stars as the voice of the game’s lead character, Richard “Demo Dick” Marcinko.

In addition to Rourke, the real Demo Dick was at our booth. Check out G4TV’s interview with him (which also includes Todd discussing Point Lookout).

At Game Trailers, there’s a new video interview with Project Lead Aeron Guy. Additionally, Digital Trends has a podcast interview with Producer Charles Harribey.

Preview coverage from E3 is making its way online too. Check out impressions of the game at Big Download, Neoseeker, Gaming Angels, and IGN.

Rogue Warrior ships on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this fall. Head to the game’s Official Site for more details.

E3 Roundup: WET

At E3, we showed several titles (including Fallout 3′s latest DLC, Point Lookout). Rather than lumping all the coverage into one blog post, I’ll make it easier on you guys and separate them out by title.

Up first, here’s a look back at E3 coverage for WET.

Crave Online has a new on the Top 15 Original IPs to Debut at E3.” WET kicks off their list. Here’s an excerpt:

“This may be one of the coolest, most stylish games I have ever seen. But then, I am a huge fan of grindhouse cinema, so I’m biased. Written by the head writer of the first season of 24 and modeled after vintage 70s action flicks, Wet looks and plays like a video game version of Kill Bill.”

At Gamingvice.net, this sentiment was echoed by Gary Francis who stated, “… I think we’ve got a great game on our hands.”

At Gamespot’s E3 Booth, Patrick Fortier (Creative Director) and Ash Ismail (Lead Game Designer) participated in a live demo of the game — showing off gameplay and revealing new details on the game. Check out the video above. For more video footage, check out this video at G4TV — featuring Eliza Dushku — the voice behind Rubi Malone. Oh, umm, Patrick’s in this video too.

During her time at our E3 booth, Eliza answered some questions for Blast Magazine. Here’s a snippet:

Do you see yourself doing more video game roles now that you’ve got this one done?

Eliza Dushku: I was sort of holding off after the first two and then this one came to me. I like the idea of seeing this one sort of go farther and go deeper. I definitely feel a real identification with [the character].

The weekend is almost here, but here’s some news and more from around the web.

DarkOne, the site administrator for TES Nexus and Fallout 3 Nexus, let me know about Nexus’ Millionth Member Modding Competition. The contest is in honor of, you guessed, the combined communities soon having their one millionth member, and to celebrate the occasion (congrats!), they’re having a modding competition. Head here for details, rules, and more.

New previews for Broken Steel continue to make their way online. Here’s a snippet from Will Tuttle’s preview for GameSpy:

“One of the first things I noticed about Broken Steel is the fact that it will feature a bunch of new enemies, provided your character is above level 18. The Feral Ghoul Reavers are similar to their creepy cousins, but they pack quite a bit more punch, tossing grenades with reckless abandon, safe in the knowledge that they’re covered with heavy body armor. Speaking of armor, the new Enclave Hellfire Troopers that you’ll encounter in the military base are wearing some stylish new gear, as well as sporting a badass new weapon that we’ll talk about later. Finally there are the new Supermutant Overlords, which I unfortunately didn’t get to see. I only pray they’re tougher than the Supermutant Behemoths that I was taking out with ease by the end of the main game. Those guys were wusses.”

At yesterday’s MCV Awards for the game industry, Bethesda won the Sales Triumph Award for Fallout 3. To see all the winners, head here.

In the weird and wacky, Crispy Gamer has included  Fallout 3 in their on-going series, World’s Greatest Videogame Toilets. Meanwhile, IGN lists the Capital Wasteland as one of the Top Ten Worst Video Game Vacations.

And finally, we’ve got another Matthew Perry update. After talking up Fallout 3 on Jimmy Fallon and The View last week, our favorite “Friend” continued his discussion on the Ellen DeGeneres show. In the video above, head to the 8:45 mark.

The Pitt hits March 24th

Today we announced that Fallout 3′s second DLC, The Pitt, will be released on Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows LIVE on Tuesday, March 24th and cost 800 Microsoft Points.

Along with the announcement, we’ve got three brand new screenshots up on our official site — including the one above that introduces you to the Trogs. For more details on The Pitt, check out new hands-on impressions at OXM (UK) and Eurogamer.

Here’s a few notable Fallout 3 mentions I thought you’d like to check out.

First, there’s a contest at Planet Fallout that you’ll want to enter. Entering their “End of World Sweeps” gives you a chance to win a plasma TV, an Area-51: Quad Core Flagship from Alienware, an Xbox 360, as well as some Fallout 3-related schwag. To enter, you must be at least 18 years of age and a US resident. You can read the rest of the contest rules here before entering.

Also at Planet Fallout, Blinzler continues his primer for Fallout 3 with new features on characters, places, and groups found within the game.

Here’s the latest Fallout 3 coverage from around the internet.

Since our last update, Gus Mastrapa of Crispy Gamer has completed his hands-on preview trilogy. Click here for the cliffhanger, and here for his celebration with the Ewoks.

Also coming out of Pete’s trip out to San Fran — there’s a new preview from GamesRadar, as well as a new interview at GameRevolution. Here’s a snippet from the latter:

GameRevolution: Can you talk a little about the work and prep that went into rendering believable post-apocalyptic environs based in and near Washington, D.C?

Pete Hines: A lot of research went into figuring out what buildings in DC would have existed in the Fallout universe, since that world splits off from the world we know after WWII. So you’ll see landmarks you may recognize, and a number of things you won’t because they’re unique to the Fallout world. Our artists spent a lot of time figuring out how to incorporate the design influences of that period with the buildings they created so that it feels both familiar and slightly “off” at the same time.

Following Pete’s west coast trip, a few more previews have surfaced.

Gus Mastrapa at Crispy Gamer put up part 1 one of his feature “I Survived Four Hours of Fallout 3.” Below is a snippet of his experience in the Capital Wastleland:

“I’m under the shadow of a wrecked freeway overpass propped up by tilting concrete pylons. The road, maybe two stories up, comes to an abrupt halt. The husk of a ruined bus teeters on the edge. There’s got to be something good up there, I think. Picking my way across the landscape, I eventually come to the spot where the ramp meets the earth. My suspicions were correct: The elevated stretch of freeway has been claimed by survivors. Barricades have been propped up along its length, transforming the interrupted roadway into a defensible position. There are a ton of obstacles between me and my goal, where imaginary treasure awaits.”

In other hands-on news, Gamepro.com’s Sid Shuman has a two-page preview of the game. Elsewhere, Locke Webster blogs about his play experience for UGO, noting that there might be some spoilers for folks that don’t want to know too much.

Around the web: Tales from San Francisco

Pete spent Monday and Tuesday letting press folks go hands-on with Fallout 3 for a few hours. Today there’s a slew of new previews and interviews to read. Here’s the rundown…

We’ll start at Gamespot, who have a video interview with Pete (shown above). I could help but laugh at the backdrop for the interview. With that fireplace, it looks like Pete is on Masterpiece Theater. When you’re done watching that, Shaun McInnis shares his latest impressions after playing for four hours. Here’s a snippet:

“Back inside the corrugated metal walls of Megaton, I walked down to the atomic bomb sitting in the middle of town. For the second time, I rolled right up next to it and gave it a good inspection. This time, I was able to disarm the thing and rescue the local citizens from the precarious position of living in a city with a live atom bomb acting as a town plaza. Lucas Simms was so grateful that he gave me the keys and deed to a local house. I was pretty excited about that, considering that I’d spent the previous night sleeping on a mattress I’d found in the Super-Duper Mart bathroom.”
