Around the Web: New hands-on impressions

Pete’s back at the office after a busy week at Leipzig (the above pic shows folks lining up to check out the game on Wednesday), and new hands-on impressions are starting to appear online. Click on the links below for new impressions of the game, but keep in mind that since some journalists are getting to spend more and more time with the game, some of the previews have information that could be considered spoilers. You’ve been warned…

  • Gamespot’s Guy Cocker gets a second chance to go hands-on with the game at Leipzig.
  • David Clayman at IGN had an opportunity to play the game on both PC and 360.
  • UGO blogger Rusty shares his unique hands-on experience from Leipzig.
  • GamersGlobal also had a chance to play the PC version of the game.
  • Prior to Leipzig, MTV Multiplayer’s Steven Totilo went hands-on for 90 minutes with the game in New York.

Around the Web: Bonus Round continues

Above is the latest edition of Game Trailers’ Music in Gaming series. This week’s discussion focuses primarily on distribution of music on gaming platforms — with Fallout 3 composer, Inon Zur, sharing his opinions on the matter. Next Sunday, the final segment on this series will air, with the panel discussing the future of composition in games — should be interesting to hear Inon’s thoughts on that.

Elsewhere, there’s a new press coverage out of Europe to check out. At Gamers Universe, there’s a lengthy video interview with Pete where he sounds off on topics ranging from VATs to DLC discussion.  New interviews can also be found at Bit-Tech, GamersGlobal, and Guardian.co.uk. From the latter, here’s a snippet of Pete discussing pacifism in Fallout 3:

Can you tag Medicine, Repair and Barter, and focusing on those skills, still be able to  complete the game?

Pete: Sure. We recently had someone play through the game and finish it while only killing one thing very early in the game…a Radroach. I’m not saying I recommend everyone run out and try to play the game as a pacifist, but if you want to give it a try, it has been done.

Catching up with coverage

If you’re looking for new Fallout 3 previews and interviews, there’s plenty to check out.

First, the above is the cover for the August issue of Peelaja-magazine (Finland) which just recently made its way to newsstands. If you’re over in Finland, be sure to check it out.

There’s quite a few new interviews with Pete stemming from his busy trip to Europe last week. Crispy Gamer has a five-page interview conducted by Paul Semel. Here’s a sample:

Crispy Gamer: Over time, your guns in the game will wear out and ultimately become less accurate. First off, how quickly will that happen? Am I going to have to buy a new gun after every battle?

Hines: All weapons in the game degrade over time. Many are beat up when you first find them. You either have to repair them yourself using your Repair skill, or find people who can repair it for you. It’s not an immediate thing, but as you use a weapon you can see it start to degrade at what feels like the right level. So you have to find more of that weapon to repair it yourself, or pay someone to do it. If you have to do it after every battle, you’re probably wasting a lot of ammo and are a terrible shot. It doesn’t happen that fast.

Coverage from across the pond

The previews for Fallout 3 continue — with new coverage popping up following Pete’s European Adventure last week.

Gamespot has a featured preview on their site after Guy Cocker from their UK office went hands-on with the game for about an hour. Here’s a snippet of his playthrough:

“Above ground once again, we started to head out of town and toward downtown Washington, DC. We knew that we wouldn’t make it there in the short time period that we had, but we figured it was a good direction to head in. We started to come across some new enemies such as the feral ghouls, which are humanoid characters that had obviously been affected by radiation. We also encountered a trader with a hut full of goodies and a couple of dogs, although considering that we didn’t have any money, we couldn’t buy any of the items that he was offering.”

Around the web: Interviews with Todd edition

Here’s a few previews/interviews that have surfaced since Friday.

IGN has the demonstration Todd did for LiveWire w/ Jessica Chobot (above) available on their site. You can stream it above, or watch a higher resolution version here.

Speaking of Todd, there’s a couple other interviews you can check out. MTV Multiplayer’s Stephen Totilo spoke with him at E3, and there’s not one, but two interviews that went up on their blog this week. Meanwhile, the BBC put up an interview late last week.

Around the Web: More from E3

Time again for another post-E3 web roundup.

We’ll start with videos. First, Steve Masters from GotGameTV talked with Pete after going hands-on with Fallout 3 last week. You can also hear Pete talk about the game on the latest episode of The Totally Rad Show. The program is pretty long, so if you don’t want to hear the crew discuss movies, you’ll want to head to the 17-minute mark where the Fallout stuff starts.

In other online coverage, Fallout 3 has pulled down a few more E3 awards. Here’s a rundown:

  • GameSpy honored Fallout 3 as the Xbox 360 and PS3 Game of Show. The game was also was named the Game of Show Overall Runner-Up.
  • GamePro has their awards up, where they awarded the game with a E3 2008 Silver Award.
  • Planet Xbox 360 awarded the game their Best of Show honor.
  • GameDaily listed the game among their Best of Xbox 360 here.
  • At Gamezone, there’s a Top Ten Games of E3 list where Fallout 3 makes the list at the #2 spot.
  • Scrawlfx declares Fallout 3 their Game of Show.

Around the web: Another E3 roundup

Here’s the latest Fallout 3 coverage from last week’s E3 festivities…

First some “Best of E3″ news. Edge-Online picked their top 20 games of the week and included Fallout 3 in the mix. Elsewhere, WhatIfGaming’s unveiled their awards for E3 — with Fallout 3 picking up the Best RPG award and a number of runner-up mentions (including Game of Show, Best PC Game, and Best Console Game). To check out all of their awards, click here.

As for hands-on previews, here’s a list of sites that have put up new previews:

  • Gaming Shogun played the game and believe it’s “as addicting as Jet sprinkled on iguana-on-a stick!” Nice reference.
  • Travis Meacham shares thoughts on his 30-minute gameplay experience over at Tom’s Games.
  • Gay Gamer has a new preview after getting to try out the game.
  • Tracy Erikson of GameShark analyzes the game’s combat system, including VATS.
  • Jem Alexander references Oblivion and previous Fallout games in PS3 Fanboy’s latest preview of the game.
  • PC World’s Sid Shuman found playing the game to be “a pleasure.” A fan of Bioshock, he draws comparisons between the games.

Outside of E3 coverge, Dan Stapleton interviewed Todd and Emil for PC Gamer’s September cover story. If you haven’t checked it out already, it’s now available at Games Radar.

Expect more previews/coverage of Fallout 3 in the coming days/weeks. We’ll keep you posted on what we find.

Around the web: Return from E3

Pete and Co. (and the Fat Man) are back from E3. Here’s a look at some of latest Fallout 3 coverage on the internetz.

We’ll start at Kotaku, who have two Fallout 3-related posts today. First is a clip of Todd volunteering for their “Justify Your Game” series, where the participant has 15 seconds to do just that. If Todd’s 15 10 seconds doesn’t provide enough substance for you, Mike Fahey has a post discussing how different 30 minutes can be spent exploring the game.

Moving along, Robert “Apache” Howarth of Voodoo Extreme has his impressions of the game online. Here’s a taste of what he had to say:

“The demo started with us leaving the Vault; we just had to press a little button and off we went. As you might imagine, being an underground dweller for most of our life, the glare at first was overwhelming. After we rubbed the bloom from our eyes, we ventured forth into the wasteland to see what sort of trouble we could get into. We only had 30-minutes, so there was a limit to what havoc we could create, but I managed to explore the surrounding area a bit, enter a town, talk to a bunch of NPCs, collect a few new weapons and other items of interest, get a couple quests and of course, kill a bunch of radioactive critters.”

While time was limited at E3, Will Porter of PC Zone (UK) got to spend five hours playing the game when he visited our office last month. You can check out his impressions in issue 197 (now on newsstands) or just head over to CVG. Here’s a snippet:

“Having played the game for only five hours, and with many of the hang-ups people had with Oblivion only becoming apparent after 50, I can’t be definitive about this – but in terms of building a modern game on the systems of one that’s now 10 years old, it’s hard to think of how Fallout 3 could have been tied closer to what has gone before.”

If you’re eyes are too blurry from reading up on E3, there’s an audio interview with Todd that’s worth a listen. He discusses a variety of topics — including the game’s title, the world size, and the chance to win a pie. Mmm, pie.
