With Tuesday’s release of Point Lookout, there’s quite a few reviews now online. Here’s a rundown:

GameSpy called picking up Fallout 3’s 4th DLC a “no brainer.” Here’s a snippet from the review:

“The quest lines and exploration gameplay feel very Fallout, and you’ll want to walk through every inch of the map to make sure you don’t miss out on the many different landmarks tucked away in its farthest reaches. The battles can be quite challenging, and there’s plenty of creative, genuinely funny stuff here that’ll have as much of an impact as the greatest bits from the original game.”

In addition the the Brink coverage, I thought I’d share some updates on WET, Fallout 3, and even Oblivion.

At Entertainment Weekly, there’s a new feature on 11 Videogames Spawned by Summer Movies, which includes WET as the game draws inspiration from Grindhouse flicks and the works of Quentin Taratino and Robert Rodriguez. Those seeking for information on WET should check out G4TV’s video interview with Lead Designer Ash Ismail. Additionally, new previews are up at Binge Gamer, NowGamer, and Ready Up!

Around the Web: Comics and Videos edition

A few things worth checking out.

Following the announcement of Mothership Zeta and Point Lookout, Ctrl+Alt+Del has a new webcomic suggesting new ideas for Fallout 3 DLC. On my upcoming trip to Michigan, I’ll have to keep an eye out for any Vaults in Butterfield. Meanwhile, at AmazingSuperPowers, there’s another comic that appears to be Fallout inspired.

I’ve seen a couple amusing fan videos on YouTube this week. Pete sent me this first video, Oblivi-Watch, which is a fun spoof of Baywatch. Poor Adoring Fan — he takes so much abuse. The second video, Team Fallout, was recently uploaded by BGS forum member/modder TheTalkieToaster, successfully spoofs Team Fortress 2.

In other news, Kikizo’s staff has a new preview for WET on their site. In related news, there’s a new interview with WET’s Creative Director Patrick Fortier at NextGen Player. Here’s a snippet:

NGP: At this point in time, how much of the game is completed? Are there any recent or upcoming new developments for the game?

PF: We are currently putting the final touches to the game as we are quickly headed towards release. Most of our time is spent playing through all the levels, balancing different values and debugging the game!

Fallout 3 is nominated in three categories (Game of the Year, Favorite Weapon, and Favorite Environment) in the Guy’s Choice Awards at Spike. Head to Gametrailers to vote.

New reviews for Broken Steel have popped up online. Here’s a snippet from Gaming Age’s review:

“All in all, Broken Steel winds up being a great diversion and a good excuse to re-visit the Capitol Wastelands. Between the continuation of the storyline, the tougher enemies, and the great amount of action given, it’s well worth the $10 to take a ride with the Brotherhood of Steel one more time.”

In other news, there’s a new Fallout 3 interview with Pete Hines at OXM (UK). Here’s a snippet where Pete discusses the upcoming novels for The Elder Scrolls:

Bethesda is also doing Oblivion books. Will this be a continuation of the Oblivion story, or will it lead into another game or product?

Pete: It’s not a continuation of Oblivion but it does fit into… so it’s not like “well, Martin sacrificed himself and Tamriel was saved and next day what happened…” It takes place years or some period of time after that.

Here’s some news that’s popped up since the weekend.

To begin, Develop 100 has ranked the Top 100 developers in the game industry and placed Bethesda Softworks #10 on their list. Check out the full list here. Elsewhere in the world of rankings, VG Chartz has begun their countdown of the Top 100 Best Games of All Time. The list isn’t complete, but they’ve ranked Morrowind #92. Here’s a snippet:

“The third entry in the Elder Scrolls saga has established itself firmly as the preeminent open world sandbox role-playing game, wherein you may go anywhere and do anything. It’s true that there is a primary quest to be undertaken, and the beginning and end for many adventurers will ring alike, but the entire point of this game is in how you can establish the path by which you traverse the world.”

Broken Steel Review Roundup

I’ve been combing the internet for reviews on Broken Steel and thought I’d share a few of them.

At GameFocus, Brian Edey had this to say in his review:

“Bottom Line is that there is much to explore, must to experience and much to disintegrate in the game and this is why the final score is so high for the expansion. It’s the best DLC we have seen in a long time for any content on any platform for any game.”

Here’s a look at some online coverage from the past week…

Up on GamaSutra today, there’s a three-page interview with Pete Hines. Among other things, Pete discusses our partnership with Splash Damage and our DLC philosophy. Here’s a snippet of the latter:

As a developer of open-world games, I imagine there is some degree of creative restriction on what Bethesda can do with DLC, in that discrete content has to be integrated in some logical way. You can’t just add another racetrack to the menu, or whatever. How do you approach that?

Pete Hines: It is a constraint from one standpoint, which is that if you’re going to plug it into the existing world then it has to be adaptable for anybody at any level that we discern, at least for the first two [in Fallout 3]. We don’t discern whether you’re level 1, level 10, level 15, or level 20, so we have to allow for all of that.

But in general, no. We like building our games that way. Having the DLC exist within that world allows us to, once we’re done making all the content for the game and we’ve finished the game from that standpoint and then spent lot of time playing it, look for areas that we’d like to do more of — to do something different than when you’re looking at the whole spectrum of content you’ve provided.

Happy Friday everyone! Here’s some stuff from around the web you can check.

We start with an X-Play interview from last week’s GDC, where Todd and Emil look back at Fallout 3 , discuss the game’s strategy guide, and briefly mention design goals for future projects. Check out the embedded video above.

The Pitt’s been out for more than a week, and there are plenty of new reviews. Wesley Yin-Poole recently put up his review at Videogamer.com. Here’s a snippet:

Eventually the five or six hour experience evolves into a more traditional Fallout 3 quest than Operation Anchorage ever was. There are plenty of NPCs to interact with, one or two funny moments, some intense action, vibrant and atmospheric environments and plenty of interesting choices to make. At one point you’re forced to battle for your freedom in an irradiated arena Gladiator style. The big decision at the end is, unlike many in Fallout 3, a choice between two disturbing outcomes. Throughout much of the game the right and wrong answers are obviously distinct. Here it’s the same, but at least you’re made to feel a little uncomfortable by both choices.
