Gamescom 2014 – The Evil Within Wins ‘Best Console Game (PlayStation)’

Not that I can speak about it personally (I’ve never been to Gamescom), but talking to those that attended and knowing that more than 300,000 attend the show, it sounds pretty hectic.

And with that, we’d like to give thanks to all the folks that helped make this year’s show such a success for Bethesda — for The Elder Scrolls Online, BATTLECRY, and The Evil Within.

Specific to The Evil Within, we’re very excited about the awards the game claimed at the show, including the official Gamescom award for Best Console Game (Sony PlayStation), JeuxVideo.com’s Best Survival Horror Game, and Computer Bild Spiele’s Best Next Gen Game.

To everyone that attended, and everyone that worked the booth, thanks for making this year’s Gamescom so memorable!

Below are some photo highlights from the show, as well as the newest screenshots for The Evil Within.

ESO — Update 3 is Live!

Update 3 has arrived on the live servers today, bringing more customization, mercantile opportunities, and fixes to The Elder Scrolls Online. Highlights include:

The dye system is here, giving you the chance to add a personal touch to your armor. New dyes are earned by completing achievements, and dyes for those you’ve already finished will already be unlocked for you. Dyeing your armor is as simple as approaching a dye station and selecting your favorite color scheme. We can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Guilds have good reasons to be excited about the update, too. Guild leaders can now create custom guild ranks and design their own guild tabard. There are tons of icons, colors, and tabard shapes available, so pick your favorites and put your guild’s identity on display. There’s more: guild stores can now be found throughout Tamriel. On a weekly basis, your guild can bid on one of these locations. If you win, your guild’s store will be available to the public, and you’ll make some gold from the sales!

As always, plenty of fixes and improvements are packed in along with the new features. To get all the details, read the full patch notes.

Bethesda TwitchWorks: ESO What Do We Do?

Now for something a little easier (hopefully?) than Wolfenstein: The New Order’s Ironman Mode. Join us in taking an exciting and foreign trip to the MMO world of The Elder Scrolls Online.

Admittedly, Gstaff and I aren’t MMO experts, so what better way to trial and error than with your help? We are open to suggestions about every aspect of the path our character will take including race, gender, play style… well, you get the idea.

In addition to our Tamriel venture, we will be featuring developer commentary from Jens Matthies and Jerk Gustafsson during their playthrough of their game, Wolfenstein: The New Order. Get inside knowledge from the mouths of the devs themselves as they play Chapter 1 (and much more successfully than we did last time).

During the stream, we will give you a few opportunities to win some cool things including a signed PlayStation 4 copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order. Tune in to Twitch.tv/Bethesda this Friday at 4pm EDT to make sure you don’t miss all the fun!

ESO Update – European Megaserver Migration & More

We’re preparing to make the move to our new datacenter! Get the details and answers to your questions here.

We know many of you have been looking forward to the migration, and we’re ready to share the specifics. The European megaserver migration will begin at 8:00AM EDT (1:00PM BST) on July 29th, and we anticipate that the process will be complete by 5:00PM EDT (10:00PM BST). During the migration, the European megaserver will be unavailable, but the North American megaserver, account site, and forums will not be affected.

If you have questions about the process, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few common ones. If you don’t see your question here, make sure to check out our knowledge base.

Mega!

Will anything change for me when the migration is complete?

Nope! All your characters will be just the way you left them before the move. There won’t be a patch to download, either.

The migration seems to be during European primetime. Why is that?

Moving everything over to our new datacenter is a complex operation involving a large number of our engineers and support staff in Europe and North America. It’s important to us that everyone we need for the process is awake, ready, and available. This will help us make the transition as smooth as possible.

I’m European, but created characters on the North American megaserver. Can I move them to the new European megaserver?

No. The migration will only affect characters that already exist on the European megaserver, and no transfers are available right now.

We’re looking forward to the move and are doing everything we can to make sure your characters arrive safely in the Frankfurt database. See you there!

Around the Web: ‘Extreme Character Customization’ Edition

A holiday weekend done right can feel like an eternity, but it also means missing everything that the world wide web has to offer — including the latest for The Evil Within, The Elder Scrolls Online, and Wolfenstein.

Starting light, in the embed above, watch The Onion’s in-depth look at new character customization features for The Elder Scrolls Online. It’s the best fun anyone’s had with mitochondria since A Wind in the Door.

Actually, there are new customization coming to ESO — including the ability to dye your armors. Learn more on that, combat improvements, guild enhancements, and much more in the July edition of ESO – The Road Ahead.

Elsewhere, Giant Bomb’s Patrick Klepek has a pair of posts worth checking out. DOOM fans will want to check out his interview with DOOM modder Sam Prebble, whose Total Chaos mod takes the DOOM engine in a haunting (and visually stunning) new direction.

Also on Giant Bomb, if you didn’t read Klepek’s interview with MachineGames’ Jen Matthies, you can now listen to the raw audio — a full 45 mintues worth — right here!

What else is worth checking up on? Highlights below…

  • New interviews with The Evil Within’s Shinji Mikami are now up at AusGamers and Telegraph UK.
  • The Mirror UK has it’s review of Wolfenstein: The New Order up, and they decide, “With its oppressive – yet thought-provoking – environment, explosive action and addictive nature, Wolfenstein: The New Order is a must-buy.”
  • The fun-loving folks at MTV have taken a break to share their 7 Video Games to Keep You Inside This Summer. Find out where Wolfenstein made the list (hint: it’s pretty high) here.
  • Total Xbox looks at The Evil Within and declares that the game is “the game survival horror fans have been waiting for”.

That’s all for now. If you see an article worth featuring on “Around the Web”, feel free to email us at bethblog@bethsoft.com.
