Old Story About An Old Woman

I’m sure many of you have heard of Barbara St. Hilaire, she’s the grandmother that’s been covered in the news over the last few years for being a hardcore gamer. For those that haven’t seen her blog, she often has videos posted of her playing various games. Below is a footage of her playing Oblivion:



For more videos, check out her blog. It appears she just recently got out of the hospital. We hope she’s doing well.

One last thing, I should warn you, Old Grandma Hardcore gets upset when she gets caught with stolen items. :)

Much Better than Family Circus!

Last week, Oblivion fan Bradley Chick e-mailed me to let me know about Oblivion-related comics he creates on his site, Septim’s Pride. Using characters and screens from within the game, he creates short comics. It’s kind of like to doing Red vs. Blue, yet in comic format.

His most recent post is soon to be a favorite around our office…thanks for the props!

Morrowind Now Compatible with Xbox 360

Last night I saw on Major Nelson’s blog that The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is now (finally) backwards compatible with the Xbox 360. I’m not only excited for the many fans that have contacted me about this (Pete figures he’s gotten about 5,000 e-mails on this in the last two years), but now finally I get a chance to get back into the game myself.

I just did a test on a retail 360 at the office (which was more of a scavenger hunt then I expected), and I confirm that after an Xbox Live update, you can play Morrowind, whether it’s the original release, Platinum Hits, or the Game of the Year Edition. For those without Xbox Live, there’s still ways to get the necessary update. Check here for more details.

Zelda Inspired Mod

Over the last few weeks, Christian of CCRE over on Planet Elder Scrolls has been working on this cool Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time-inspired mod for Oblivion. From the look of the screenshots, I think he pretty much nailed the look of the Master Sword and Hylian Shield from the game (a game that nearly cost me a failing grade my freshman year of college).

So now that we have The Ocarina Oblivion of Time. Does make me want to play some Zelda, or maybe just practice my Ocarina playing like this guy.

Dear (Oblivion) Diary

Got an e-mail from Brian G. from heartland of America (Des Moines, where I lived until I was 10) about how he regularly posted updates regarding his experiences playing Oblivion. I’m sure others have done this, but they Brian e-mailed me first!. I like the fact while it’s a pretty long thread, his exploits in Oblivion are all right there on one page. His updates started when he got the game on March, 22 2006 through April 18, 2007 when he wrapped up the main quest.

He didn’t post everyday, because like other fans, things always come up, such as when he posted:

“There will be no Oblivion update for tonight…or tomorrow night. the wife took the game with her to her parents’ place for the next two days so i would do homework and laundry.”

Stinky clothes and bad grades can be bad news, but you should have known to have a second copy of the game. Anyhow, thanks for sharing, Brian. Now that you’ve had an extended break from the game, you should give The Shivering Isles a chance.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition coming in September

Over the weekend, I saw several places that hinted at this, so without further ado, it’s official…The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition is coming to Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

On top of being able to play the heralded Oblivion, 360 fans not using Xbox Live will now have the opportunity to play Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles for the first time. TES IV: OGotYE (I’m sure this is what the kids will call it) also allows gamers to experience the insanity of The Shivering Isles on the PS3.

Mapquesting The Elder Scrolls

Over at The Imperial Library, several different maps have been made by fan of The Elder Scrolls. You can definitely see a lot of time and effort went into some of these ones that were made from scratch. There’s also a few cools one that are modifications of the game map made by our very own Mike Wagner.

Being somewhat new to the company, I just made ArthmodeusD’s world map my wallpaper to help me get my bearings. Head on over to the site and unroll the maps to full size. There’s some pretty impressive detail in these.

Gators Aided by Morrowind

About a month ago, I got an e-mail from University of Florida instructor Dave Small regarding a “Game Design” class the university is offering this summer. For the class, Small is using the Game of the Year edition of Morrowind for its construction set (as well as other games) to help implement their game ideas. For those considering looking for a school with game design classes, check out the syllabus for the class. There’s also a discussion about the course within our forums, including participation from one of Small’s students.

Despite being jaded towards UF for making the BCS title game over my beloved Wolverines (even though they deserved it), this sounds like a cool opportunity those looking to get into game design. I’m a bit jealous, though I did get to take a blow off class that dealt with films of the 1990′s and gaming my senior year. It was the easiest class this side of Volcanoes and Earthquakes.
