Pull up a chair and listen to Bethesda Games Studios’ Todd Howard in three video interviews now up on GameInformer.com. Across three separate videos, Todd discusses how he got into the industry, the evolution The Elder Scrolls from Arena to Skyrim, and his take on the gaming industry today.
Fun fact about Todd: In the third video, he talks about his interest in sports games, and he specifically discusses NCAA Football. At the office, we have an online dynasty going, and I can tell you Todd’s insanely good at the game. In the next week or so, I have to play against him (Notre Dame vs. Michigan). In case you missed it, GameInformer.com has revealed that the dragon text on the back cover their upcoming Skyrim issue relates back to last month’s announcement trailer. Here’s their explanation…
“Last month saw the release of the teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, also available at the bottom of this article. During the trailer, you probably noticed some mysterious language being sung. What you might not have known is that the words are in the tongue of the dragons, an entirely new language crafted by Bethesda for use in the upcoming game. This complete language plays an integral role in the story and gameplay of the upcoming epic, and introduces an intriguing new facet to the Elder Scrolls mythology.”
Once you’ve decrypted the text and know what it says, we suggest you celebrate by downloading the game’s announcement trailer from Xbox LIVE (or just using the video above) and start singing along* in English. And grab a camera — we want to see videos on YouTube.

As mentioned earlier today, the back cover for Game Informer’s Skyrim issue features some cryptic dragon text. All day we’ve seen some valiant efforts to translate it, but no one’s been able to crack the code.

For those wondering when you’ll be able to read the magazine, we’re told subscribers should start receiving their copies of the magazine around January 10th (possibly earlier) and you should be able to find it at a GameStop stores beginning January 14th. In addition to their 14-page cover story (the largest cover story in the magazine’s history), this month they’ll be putting up additional info on the game and the team at Bethesda Game Studios on their website — so be sure to keep an eye on GameInformer.com/Skyrim.
Oh, and about that mysterious text on the back cover. If you’re Dragonborn, you should be able to figure it out. Otherwise, GameInformer.com hints you’ll have more to work with very soon…
What’s that on the back cover? The strange language seen there offers the first hints of Skyrim’s story, along with a unique tie to the singing in the recent teaser trailer. What does it say? A day after Christmas, GameInformer.com has a special treat for Elder Scrolls’ fans — a feature looking back at the series so far. From its lore to advancements in its tech, the article features commentary from Todd Howard and other team members at Bethesda Game Studios. Below is an excerpt from the feature in which Todd discusses the game engine for Morrowind.
“Morrowind was a major rewrite of the whole system, using world building techniques we had used in Redguard, but on a massive scale. The whole engine was redone again. Everything was built by hand, and now with the advances in 3D, we could build everything from forks to pillows to giant castles. This game also marked our first foray into the console world with Xbox, whereas before we were just a PC developer.”
