In preparing for the launch of Fallout 3, there were a lot of things we wanted to do, including having our faces melted by the Foo Fighters (check), creating an armada of Brotherhood of Steel statues (check), and creating a fun website to…well…prepare everyone for the future.
For the latter, we knew all along we wanted a site that captured the vibe of Fallout 3 — something that fans could visit and waste way minutes, if not hours, in preparation for the game’s release. For the site, we turned to the talented folks at AKQA, and the result was Prepare for the Future.
This week you can learn a little bit more about what went into making the site. Gasket Studios, who worked with AKQA and our team to make the memorable videos on the site, have a new behind-the-scenes feature on how they made the videos…check it out.
For awhile now, I’ve been interviewing folks from our Fallout/Elder Scrolls mod community. After talking with some guys at the office, we decided it might be fun to interview a different kind of mod — our forum moderators.
We kick of “Meet the Moderators” this week with Rebecca Mueller, otherwise known in the forums as Summer. Summer is a Retired CCRN BSN MS (that’s fancy for being a nurse) and lives in the great state of Alaska.

Within our forums last week, forum member T-Ro (aka Tony D), shared some photos from his Vault Boy’s recent trip to Washington. Above you can see him researching Project Purity.

It’s been over a week since we last gave an update from around the web, so there’s plenty to catch up on.
We’ll begin with IGN, who are currently counting down The Top 100 Game Creators of All Time. We’re excited to see that Todd made the list at #70. Here’s a snippet of what they had to say about him:
“Where most designers tend to think in terms of simplicity and economy, Howard’s games have been defined by a staggering sense of scale and immersion that few others can match.”
The list is still ongoing, but there’s some of names worth mentioning. Morrowind/Oblivion composer Jeremy Soule cracked the list at #86. Meanwhile, Fallout fans might recognize a few other names on the list, including Feargus Urquhart (#89), Tim Cain (#85), and Chris Avellone (#80).
Sticking with developer news, if you haven’t seen it already, Todd answered questions for G4 while at this year’s D.I.C.E. Summit. In the ten minute interview, he discusses The Pitt, answers reader questions, and more.
Emil is in the news in a few places, too. At Edge, he was honored in their Hot 100 Games Developers list (#17). Meanwhile, a new feature on storytelling in games features him as well. You can read that here.

We lost a good friend last week. Chris Mullender, a programmer at 4J Studios, passed away suddenly last Monday morning. Chris was instrumental in development of the PS3 version of Oblivion and also worked on Star Trek: Conquest. Everyone here at Bethesda respected Chris and his work tremendously.
Paddy Burns, who worked with Chris at 4J, summed up Chris for us:
“He was a brilliant programmer who loved making games and bringing up his three young sons. He was very involved in his local community, where he was proud of his work in getting Dunbar’s Christmas lights up, and setting up a few websites for local schools and charities.”
As I said, we were saddened to find out this great guy, programmer, and father of three had passed away so suddenly. Our thoughts go out to Chris’ family and friends.
Those of you out there modding Fallout 3 with the G.E.C.K., I thought you should know about a new modding contest over at Planet Fallout called Project Safehouse.
For the contest, they’ll be looking for the best user-created Vault in three categories:
- Personal Vault
- Corporate Vault
- Government Vault
For each of the three categories, contest sponsor NVIDIA will be giving away a GeForce 9800 GTX Graphic Card. The Project Safehouse Contest is for US citizens who are at least 18 years of age and runs until April 2, 2009. For more details and contest rules, head to Planet Fallout.
This morning a new update (v 1.4) was made available on Games for Windows LIVE and Xbox LIVE. This update is specific to The Pitt only — which deploys later this month.

Today is Oblivion’s anniversary gold date on PC and Xbox 360. What does going gold mean? When a game is ready to finally go to the replicators and get printed onto millions of disks — that is when the game has gone gold. That is, we have gold master disks ready to send off to replication. For consoles like Xbox 360 and PS3, going gold means we’ve passed certification and Microsoft/Sony has sent the gold master disk to the replicators.
Fun fact: the number of people playing Oblivion has gone up since this past December. While I can’t give the actual numbers, the number of folks playing Oblivion while logged onto Xbox Live has increased back to late 2006 levels (roughly 8 months after Oblivion shipped). There are lots of reasons why this may be – 360 user base is larger now, Fallout 3 fans going back to Oblivion or trying out Oblivion, Oblivion is cheaper/on sale, etc…
Anyhoo, thanks to everyone who bought Oblivion and keep playing it to date. Check out the downloadable content or the expansion pack, Shivering Isles, if you are one of the folks still playing it. Be sure to try my personal favorite, Wizard’s Tower.

Sorry if it’s old news at this point, but it had many of us ROFLing.
There’s plenty of great new games being played these days — Dawn of War 2, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, Street Fighter IV or more — but after seeing the above photo at 1Up — I figured we had to feature Killzone 2. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the game, and I look forward to sitting down with it.
