New Elder Scrolls Mods

Welcome back to another update about the Elder Scrolls mod universe. While I was away for Thanksgiving, I received a handful of messages regarding new mods made by you!

For Oblivion, The Priest sent me an email about an expansion mod he has been working on called “Gates to Aesgaard: Episode 1.” The project, which has been in the works for the last five months, is described as an “action/horror quest” where your character will confront “an ancient twisted evil, well hidden in the ages, through a journey in time and space and the hellish kingdom of the ‘Cursed Ones.’” Talking more about the project, The Priest claims the project doesn’t follow the norms of typical RPGs, and also that folks can probably expect a second episode in a few months. Star Trek Game Capping Contest

Over the weekend, Star Trek Gamers announced a new “game capping” contest pertaining to Star Trek titles published by us (Legacy, Tactical Assault, Encounters, and our newest Trek game, Conquest). So what is game capping? Basically, it’s just creating a video of you playing a game (above is an example I found on YouTube).

Obviously anyone can just make a video, so try to find ways to be creative (humor, unbelievable action, etc.). According to the rules, videos must only have “stock footage” from our games (read: no mods). To pick the winners, STG has turned to fansite Trek Core to judge the videos.

The winner of the contest will receive a signed Star Trek: Legacy poster, as well as “a random classic Star Trek game.” For more details on how to enter the contest, visit Star Trek Gamers.

Midgetalien talks about modding Morrowind

This week we’re talking with Morrowind modder Midgetalien. Hailing from the UK, he’s a 19-year-old studying Ancient History and Archaeology. I asked him if he had anything interesting to share with the community, Simon (that’s his real name) claims he has no fingers on his right hand.

Here’s what he had to say about his modding experience.

How did you get into modding? Can you talk about the first mod you ever worked on?

Why did i get into modding? I don’t really know, I guess that i liked the idea of being able to add new content to the game. When I first joined the community I made loads of requests for, what I now see as really small details (such as adding soul gems to a merchant), then someone said “hey why not do it yourself?” It kinda grew from there.The first mod i ever worked on was a personnel Balmora Expanded mod. Theres a couple out there already but they were not what i was looking for. I never released that mod because it was so buggy and conflicted with way to many others. I may go back and change it. After that my first public release was Vampire Lair. Currently at version 4 it is unstable and instead of fixing those bugs i am working on a complete new version starting from scratch. Giving Thanks

I realize in most of the rest of the free world Thanksgiving isn’t that big a deal. Here in the States, it is, and not just as a celebration of people managing to make it to the country where we now live without getting themselves killed, but as a chance to take time out to be thankful for what we have and to be with friends and family. So in that spirit, here is a list of things we are thankful for this Thanksgiving:

Mark Lampert, Sound Designer: I’m thankful to be in good health and working here on games like Fallout 3 and the Elder Scrolls series. It’s a lot of responsibility and folks here have seen fit to leave me at the wheel, so it’s an honor.

Jared Angus, QA Tester: I am thankful for my good health, my great job, my supporting family, and most of all my beautiful wonderful fiancée.

Nathan McDyer: I’m thankful that after almost 2 years I’m still on my first 360.

Fallout 3 Coverage Tidbits

Noticed that yesterday CVG put up part two of their interview with me over on their site. Here’s an excerpt:

How many hours will Fallout 3 take to finish in the first play through?

Pete Hines: That’s a play-style thing. It’s probably about 20 good hours for the main quest and all of the side quest stuff is probably at least another 20 hours. Then there’s all the miscellaneous freeform stuff, the exploring.

Marc-André, Come On Down!!!!!

It’s no small thing to enter a contest and beat out thousands upon thousands of entries to be named the winner. So having risen to the top we thought we’d have a brief chat with the grand prize winner of the Fallout 10th Anniversary contest to find out more about Marc-André from Montréal, the guy behind Grim Reaper’s Sprint: 

How long have you been playing games?
Wow, I’d say around 20 years. I got a NES system back when I was in kindergarten and I’ve been playing ever since.

What’s your gaming platform(s) of choice?
Right now I’d say my Xbox360 and my PSP. Whenever I’m at home, I like to play on my PC or my console, but since I move around a lot, I like to keep my PSP with me (and sometimes my DS, but not so much lately).

Fallout 10th Anniversary Contest Winners Announced

After plowing through more entries than we ever thought possible, we whittled the list of over 17,000 entries down to the 12 finalists and picked a winner for the Fallout 10th Anniversary Contest. The entry that came out on top was ‘Grim Reaper’s Sprint,’ which restores all your action points whenever you kill an opponent. Congratulations to Marc-André Deslongchamps from Montreal for his winning entry. He selected the PC Grand Prize and takes home a boatload of goodies in addition to getting his Perk in Fallout 3. We’ll have a little interview up with Marc-André today or tomorrow.

But Marc-André wasn’t the only winner, and a lot of folks won some pretty cool stuff for their creative entries, as well as a few lucky folks who were selected at random just for entering the contest: ATI and NVIDIA cards, and an Xbox 360 from Microsoft, keyboards and mice from Logitech, Logitech PS3 controllers, bobbleheads, lunchboxes, etc. If you’re one of the lucky winners, you’ll be hearing from me shortly about your prize(s). Now Shipping: Shivering Isles on PS3 (and coming to PSN)

For those playing Oblivion PS3 that have been waiting for a chance to buy the Shivering Isles expansion (by itself, not as part of GotY), it will be shipping throughout North America beginning today. You can hit the jump below for the full release.

Of note in that release is a this part at the end: “Shivering Isles for PLAYSTATION®3 system will also be available for download on the PLAYSTATION®Network (North American, English only) beginning November 29th.”

So, there’s your confirmation that we finally sorted out how to make it available as a download on PSN and it will be out next Thursday for N. America. We will let you know about availability of Shivering Isles in Europe/Australia/Everywhere else in any format just as soon as we can. It’s just not something I can confirm for you at this time.
