Around the Web — one last time in 2007

Before taking off in celebration of the New Year, I thought I’d share a few nuggets of information that we’ve come across recently…

Various websites continue to forecast which games they’re pumped to play in 2008. The staff at CVG have put up a list titled “2008’s Essential PS3 Games,” which includes Fallout 3. It’s nice to see the game make the list with such great company (MGS 4, LittleBigPlanet, and GTA IV were among some of the other games that made the cut). Discussing Fallout 3, they wrote:

What we played: Our 2007 Game of the Year picks

big2.jpg

2007, we hardly knew thee. For this week’s “What we’re playing,” we’re reflecting on our personal favorite games from this past year. Looking through the list, you’ll see lots of the well-known favorites, including Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, and Rock Band. If we had to lock ourselves in a room and fight over our official office pick for GOTY, I’d venture to say it would end up being between the Orange Box or Bioshock. If you’ve been following this blog, or playing games this year, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

As for the format for our rankings, there really isn’t one…I’ve let folks at the office format their lists as they please. If you’d like, feel free to share your picks in the comments section.

On to the lists…

Vote for “Best Game Add-On” on Xbox.com

gatekeeper1.jpg

Today it’s been brought to my attention that within the community forums of Xbox.com, they’re running a vote for the “Best Game Add-On” of 2007. Among the choices are downloads for Boom Boom Rocket, Crackdown, Gears of War, Guitar Hero 3, Halo 3, Rock Band and last but not least, The Shivering Isles, the expansion for Oblivion.

If you’re a fan of Shivering Isles and like participating in these year end polls, head here and cast your vote. If you decide to vote for the Black Sabbath Track Pack for Rock Band, we won’t hold it against you.

Around the Web: Looking back, looking forward

Here’s a few interesting items I noticed while catching up on things after being away the past few days.

Game Informer has listed their top ten games they’re looking forward to in 2008 for the 360. Fallout 3 cracked the list at #3. Here’s a short sample of what they had to say:

“When word got out that Bethesda was working on Fallout 3, critics assumed the worst and the “Oblivion with guns” cry was born. Having sat through a demo of the game, we can’t say who’s right here, if making such a determination is even possible. All we know is that seeing your character step out of the nuke-proof vault for the first time in his life is a breathtaking gaming moment. We’re eager to explore this terrible world all over again, through a new set of eyes.”

On the Elder Scrolls front, both Oblivion and Shivering Isles have picked up some year end accolades and nominations. At IGN, the PS3 release came away with the Best RPG award. Sticking with PS3, it was also a runner-up in the Game of the Year, Best Graphics Technology, Best Original Score categories. In their PC category, Shivering Isles was a runner-up in the Best Expansion category. On 360, Shivering Isles was a runner-up in the Best RPG and Best DLC categories.

Over at Gamespot, Oblivion and Shivering Isles also received some recognition. On PS3, Oblvion is one of five finalists for PS3 Game of the Year. As for Shivering Isles, it was recognized in two categories, Best Expansion and Best DLC, on Xbox 360.

This week’s mod interview is with Razorwing (or Gloomwing over at the BGS forums). In “reality”, Razorwing is known as Patrik Jonasson. Patrick lives with his wife and kids, and during the day, works as a fork lift driver. In regards to the Elder Scrolls, Patrik heads the Silgrad Tower mod team that has been working from scratch to recreate the visual look of Morrowind within Oblivion.

A Bethesda Holiday Wish List

315_singing_wit_hankey2.gif

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the development house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even Fred

The stockings were hung, by the chimney with care

In hopes that Rock Band, Mario Galaxy, and Bioshock would soon be there…

My apologies…that’s pretty terrible. Nevertheless, it’s Christmas Eve and folks at the office wanted to share what they’re hoping for this holiday season….whether they were naughty or nice…

Holiday T-Shirt Giveaway Winner #1: Andy Barnes…come on down!

andywinner.jpg

A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned that we would be giving away our new Vault Boy shirts to folks that came up with creative Fallout/Holiday “stuff.” We’ve received quite a few entries, and we’ll continue to accept them through the end of the year. That said, we thought we’d start sharing some of the winners.

The first winner (and actually, the first entry we received) is from Andy Barnes, who sent this post-apocalyptic gingerbread house and giant-sized Vault Boy.

Congrats to Andy.

What we’re playing: Home for the Holidays edition

With Christmas being early next week, folks at the office have a little extra time to play some games. For those with plenty of vacation time (including folks who already left for the remainder of the year….BTW, I’m jealous), it’s the perfect time to catch up on all the year’s best games.

Since I’m heading out to Las Vegas tonight, I’ll be playing Phantom Hourglass on the plane. After that, I’ll be playing plenty of games, but not ones that require a console. C’mon big money!

Here’s what other folks will be playing…
