The Jaeger-meister: id software’s Hugo Martin

This Saturday at QuakeCon (and streaming live at Twitch.TV/Bethesda), id Software’s art director, Hugo Martin, will be speaking about his career in games and films. If you’re not familiar with his work, you need only visit a movie theater and check out (the totally awesome) Pacific Rim. For the film, Martin was part of  director Guillermo Del Toro’s core concept team.

While in Texas, we had a chance to catch up with Hugo. Read the interview below…

How did you get started as an artist (include brief history of career highlights)?

I studied Illustration at Pratt Institute and Transportation Design at Art Center College of Design.

I started my career as a pose to pose animator and storyboard artist at MTV animation in NYC, but my first true concept job came after that when I worked in the IP development department at Wizards of the Coast. I went on to work at Naughty Dog as a concept artist on Jak X Team Racing and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and then on to Blur Studios doing concept work on a variety of film, commercial, game and animation Projects.

After Blur I decided to go freelance. For 3 1/2 years I worked as a contract concept artist out of my studio and on-site whenever possible — primarily doing design work on films and games — the most notable from that period being of course PACIFIC RIM :) .

What was your principle role on Pacific Rim?

I had the privilege and honor of being a part of Guillermo’s core concept team. My primary focus was on the design of the Jaegers, and from there I moved on to key frame illustration and then prop designs. I also had the chance to work on the Blade head Kaiju you see fighting Striker Eureka in the film.

Don’t miss never-before-seen areas as ZeniMax Online Studio’s creative director, Paul Sage joins other members of ZeniMax Online Studios team to show off the latest chapter in the Elder Scrolls saga.

The Physics of Light and Rendering | A Talk by John Carmack (5 pm CST) – John Carmack returns to the mainstage to explain how light behaves in the real world, and the approximations and compromises that are involved in simulating the behavior with computers. This lecture will be geared towards those interested in the interactions of light in the world and how computer software simulates it. Note: Not for the technically faint at heart.

Dishonored | The Brigmore Witches Game Presentation (11:00 am CST) – See gameplay for Dishonored’s final add-on, The Brigmore Witches, two weeks before its August 13th release date. On stage to share the game and answer fan questions will be Arkane Studios’ Raphael Colantonio, Ricardo Bare, and Seth Shain. Have questions about the content? QuakeCon Trials, a series of daily trials taking place in QuakeCon’s exhibit hall that will test the skills of players in notable games from Bethesda/id Software, will make its debut at QuakeCon 2013!

Across six challenges of varying difficulty, you’ll compete for a share of fortune and glory, with prizes that include: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 graphics cards, raffle cards for a chance to win one of two 2013 Ford Focus ST3s, plus additional prizes from our exhibitors and sponsors. Winners from each of the six trials will also have a chance to win a $2,000 gaming rig from XOTIC PC!

Unlike The Wizard,we’re giving you a head start on what you’ll be playing. Practice up on these trials!

Thursday August 1st, 2013

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Opening Sewer

Scenario: Using a created save, all users will start from the moment following character creation within the player’s prison cell. Players will be timed on how quickly they can get to the end of the sewer level (where they’re asked one last time to adjust their character information).

Level of Difficulty: Normal (default difficulty)

Controls: Keyboard/mouse only

Rankings: Best times (1st through 3rd) win. Trials staff will use a stop watch to determine time.

Wolfenstein 3D Level 1:

Scenario: Players will be timed on how quickly they can get through the first level of Wolfenstein 3D while completing all side tasks.

Level of Difficulty: “Bring ‘em on!” difficulty

Controls: Keyboard/mouse only

Rankings: Players must have 100% kill ratio, secret ratio, and treasure ratio to place.  Best times (1st through 3rd) win based on the in-game time displayed upon completing the level.

Friday August 2nd, 2013

Dishonored – Coldridge Prison

Scenario: Players must play through the first level of Dishonored in a stealthy fashion and in the fastest time.

Level of Difficulty: Normal (default difficulty)

Controls: Keyboard/mouse or Xbox 360 controller

Rankings: Between hostiles and civilians, no more than two can be killed to place – based upon stats screen at the completion of the level. Best times (1st through 3rd) win. Trials staff will use a stop watch to determine time. Timer ends as soon as the mission checkmark is displayed (upon meeting Samuel the Boatman).

RAGE – Mutant Bash (Chamber of Laughs)

Scenario: From the “Scenario Selection” players will compete in the first leg Bash TV (Chamber of Laughs) using the “Settler Loadout”.

Level of Difficulty: Hard

Controls: Keyboard/mouse or Xbox 360 controller

Rankings: The players with the three highest scores at completion will win.

Saturday August 3rd, 2013

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – The First Dragon

Scenario: Travelling from Whiterun, players will battle the game’s first dragon, Mirmulnir on Legendary difficulty.

Level of Difficulty: Legendary Difficulty

Controls: Keyboard/mouse only or Xbox 360 controller

Rankings: Best times (1st through 3rd) win. Trials staff will use a stop watch to determine time.

DOOM Level E4M5:

Scenario: Players will be timed on how quickly they can get through this level of DOOM while killing all enemies and getting and finding all the level’s secrets.

Level of Difficulty: Ultra Violent Difficult

Controls: Keyboard/mouse only

Rankings: Best times (1st through 3rd) win based on the in-game time displayed upon completing the level. Must achieve 100% kill and secret ratio.

Our troubles began with a name. Delilah. A mystery given to Daud by the face he sees in his dreams and whose voice he hears when kneeling at the shrines hidden in the lost parts of the city. None of us have ever heard this voice, but we know its power. It spoke to our master, telling him of his coming doom and saying that solving this riddle was the only way to escape.

We knew nothing of Delilah, except that we found a whaling ship by that name. A tenuous connection, but where the Outsider’s word is concerned there are no coincidences. We discovered the ship was named after a woman who once walked the halls of Dunwall Tower with Jessamine Kaldwin. Later she became a painter – an apprentice of Sokolov himself – until she snared an aristocratic patron named Arnold Timsh.
