AIAS Nominees Announced

Today on Gamespot, the nominees for this year’s Interactive Achievement Awards were announced. We’re excited to share news that Skyrim was nominated in six categories (including Game of the Year), while id Software’s RAGE is up for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering.

Below is the full rundown of nominations…

Brink receives WGA nomination

The Writers Guild of America has announced this year’s nominees for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing, and we’re pleased to share news that Splash Damage’s Ed ‘Bongo Boy’ Stern received a nomination for Brink.

This marks the fourth consecutive year a Bethesda title has been nominated for the award. Previously nominated titles included Fallout 3 (2008), WET (2009), and Fallout: New Vegas (2010).

Todd Howard announced as Keynote Speaker for DICE 2012

Today the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences announced that  Todd Howard will be the keynote speaker for this year’s DICE Summit. Taking place in Las Vegas next month, DICE is an annual summit that brings developers from around the industry together to discuss their work and the game industry as a whole.

Industry Visionary to Share Insights from Over 17 Years of Experience

CALABASAS, Calif. – January 10, 2012 – The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) today announced that Todd Howard, Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, will be its opening keynote speaker at the 2012 D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate and Entertain) Summit  at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Howard will discuss game development and the player experience, in the keynote session titled “Why We Create, Why We Play.”

Howard joined Bethesda in 1994 and has created some of the industry’s most successful games. He has led the creation of games such as 2011’s critically acclaimed hit, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and the award-winning Fallout 3 (2008) and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006). He is widely regarded as one of the most influential people in gaming over the past 20 years.

“The 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit will kick off with one of the most distinguished creative minds of our time with Todd Howard as our Opening Keynote speaker,” said Martin Rae, president, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. “Todd’s many contributions to the industry have greatly advanced our understanding of player interaction and engagement. His games take players on journeys through distant fantasy worlds and post apocalyptical universes that are driving a new generation of entertainment.”

The 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit brings together the top video game designers and developers from around the world and business leaders from all major publishers to discuss the state of the industry, its trends and the future. It is the home of the 15th Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony on February 9, 2012, where industry leaders and members pay tribute and recognize the individuals and games that contribute to the growth of the interactive entertainment software business. Press Release: Fallout MMO Rights Restored to Bethesda Softworks in Interplay Litigation

FALLOUT® MMO RIGHTS RESTORED TO
BETHESDA SOFTWORKS® IN INTERPLAY LITIGATION

All Fallout® Intellectual Property Rights Belong Exclusively to Bethesda

January 9, 2012 (Rockville, MD) –ZeniMax® Media Inc. today announced that a settlement had been reached in the lawsuit filed by its subsidiary, Bethesda Softworks®, against Interplay Entertainment Corporation in 2009, Bethesda Softworks LLC v Interplay Entertainment Corp., seeking cancellation of the license granted to Interplay to develop a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) based on the Fallout brand. Bethesda maintained in its complaint that Interplay had failed to meet the conditions for the license and the license was therefore of no continuing validity.

Under the terms of the settlement, the license granted to Interplay to develop the Fallout MMO is null and void, and all rights granted to Interplay to develop a Fallout MMO revert back to Bethesda, effective immediately. Interplay has no ongoing right to use the Fallout brand or any Fallout intellectual property for any game development. ZeniMax will pay Interplay $2 million as consideration in the settlement, each party will bear its own costs of the litigation, and Bethesda will continue to own all Fallout intellectual property rights. Interplay will be permitted to continue to sell the original Fallout ®Tactics, Fallout® and Fallout® 2 PC games through December 2013, after which time all rights to market those games revert to and become the sole property of Bethesda. Under the original agreement pursuant to which Bethesda had acquired the Fallout property, Interplay was granted certain merchandising rights to sell those original Fallout games, but those merchandising rights will now expire on December 31, 2013.

Skyrim Tweak Guide Livestream

To help PC players get the most out of Skyrim, last month we shared info on NVIDIA’s official tweak guide. If you missed the guide or were overwhelmed by its massiveness, you won’t want to miss NVIDIA’s livestream event taking place tomorrow.

During the stream, NVIDIA’s Kris Rey and Andrew Coonrad will discuss the guide’s ins and outs. They’ll also be joined by two special guests from the Skyrim modding community — Martigen (Martigen’s Mutant Mod & Martigen’s Monster Mod) and Skyrim Nexus’ founder and operator, DarkOne.

Catch all the fun tomorrow (January 10th) on NVIDIA’s Twitch TV channel. The stream begins at 11 AM PST.

Splash Damage creates a Brink Nerf Gun

Brink features tons of weapon customization, but Splash Damage artist Laurens Corijn has just taken it to another level. On their official website, see how he took a Nerf  Stampede ECS18 gun and heavily modified it to resemble the Resistance’s Gerund assault rifle. Reading the feature, the whole time I imagined him in character — wearing a gas mask and a makeshift tire jacket.

Skyrim Nominated for 5 Game Developer Choice Awards

The finalists for the 12th annual Game Developers Choice Awards were announced today — with Skyrim receiving nominations in five categories: Game of the Year, Best Game Design, Best Technology, Best Audio, and Best Visual Arts. Bethesda Game Studios previously was nominated for Best Game for Oblivion in 2006 and won Game of the Year Award for Fallout 3 (shown above) in 2009.

This year’s winners will be announced during the Game Developers Conference on Wednesday, March 7th.
