Conquest hitting Europe this 1st Quarter 2008

This morning, our new London office, ZeniMax Europe, put out a release that sheds some light on the European release of Star Trek: Conquest. The press release confirms that the game will be coming to PS2 and Wii this quarter in the following territories: United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia. So if you’ve been waiting to play the game, your chance is on the horizon. When we have more details, we’ll keep you updated here on the blog.

With this news, we decided extend our Conquest “Meet the Devs” challenge. The new deadline for the contest is 11:59 PM (EST) on April 6th. For more details on contest rules and how to win a Landing Party statue, check here.

  1. Hmm, why only a few countries in Europe? And why the delayed release at all? I guess the product has to be translated etc, and marketing probably plays a role too.

These days, at least in the Scandinavian countries, most people in Europe have very good English skills and, in my experience, people prefer to play games in the original language (if it is English :-). I know I hate when I buy a game and the manual and box is in Swedish/Danish only (Norwegian is usually left out). At least provide English text in addition to the translations! I hope this doesn’t escalate to the point where we get games with translated dialogs and voice-overs, but no English option!

If anything drives people to piracy, delaying the release of games to other territories must be a major factor. It sucks having to wait months to play a game currently being hyped by the (largely US based) gaming news sites, and the community; a game your pals in e.g. the US is currently playing.

Some games are currently released more or less at the same time globally (NA and EU at least), e.g Mass Effect for Xbox360 and Oblivion for both Xbox360 and Windows.

I don’t want this to turn into a rant; I’m just curious and want to understand why this is so 🙂 Hopefully I will be able to play Star Trek: Conquest one day (I guess I will have to import it from UK since Norway wasn’t listed).
