What we played: Our 2008 favorites

Well, we’ve reached the end of 2008, and what a great year it’s been for playing games. Like many other sites out there, we thought we’d share our favorites. Because we might have a little bit of a bias as to what our favorite game was, you’ll find no mention of Fallout 3 below.

Looking through the list, there’s definitely some differing opinions on what game was best. If you look at the #1 picks, Dead Space and Left 4 Dead appear to be amongst the favorites. I guess we’ve got a thing for games with severed hands on the cover.

After reading our list, be sure to let us know which games topped your list.

Happy New Year!

  1. The Dead Space demo really wasn’t something I enjoyed, but seeing so many of you recommend it, I guess I’ll have to take another look. 🙂
Similarly, I’ll also have to check out Left 4 Dead.

I’m a bit behind on my game-playing (glances guiltily at Assassin’s Creed and Mirror’s Edge sitting unopened in their boxes) … but the best game I’ve played all year is Fallout 3. Got halfway through Half-Life 2 before changing computers and keep forgetting to reinstall it. Loved the Braid demo – I’ll pick up the full game with the Points I get for the FO3 and Mass Effect DLCs. Also really enjoyed BioShock.

2008 was the year I got horribly addicted to mobile games – Diamond Twister (best game ever!), Orcs & Elves 2 (awesome), Might & Magic II (still stuck on final level), Spore (stop eating me, you bastards!) and Witcher (short, but highly recommended).

  2. Yea got DEAD SPACE for xmas and loving it eventhough I had to mess with it so as not to keep my harddrive constantly growling. One of the scariest games with a excellent storyline of fear and seduction.

FALLOUT 3 is my favorite of the year. Once more I can be anyone I want to be in a fully realized game world. Now its in a sprawling epic mix of sci-fi and nihilistic horror.

THE WICHTER Enhanced Edition is my next favorite. A buetiful medieval setting with very rich characters and graphics which runs great on my dual core 2.5 with a Radeon 3870 and 2 gigs of ram.

Happy new years to all and thanks for the art as entertainment awesomeness 😀

  3. Even with the bias I’d be interested to see how many of the staff could honestly say Fallout 3 topped their list for 2008. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great game but it’s frustrating as hell to play a game that is this clearly unfinished. It’d make my top 5 if I were to write one but no way could it ever be game of the year without extensive patching.

  4. Mine is:

    1. Fallout 3
    2. Warhammer Online
    3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    4. Command And Conquer: Red Alert 3
    5. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

  5. I am incredibly dissatisfied by fllout 3.
Every time i press “new game” the game crashes!
I have tried every possible fix, and none have worked.
get us some patches to get this (presumably) great game to work!
I dont enjoy crashes you know…

  6. My top 5 :

    5) Assassin’s Creed
    4) GTA IV
    3) Battle for Middle Earth II
    2) Warhammer : Battle March
    1) Fallout 3 🙂

  7. @ Stomper, I play the game on the PS3 where I have to endure a lack of Anti-Aliasing, frequent drops in frame rate and regular crashes/lockups.

The game content is certainly worthy, but the technical shortcomings however inexcusable for a third generation title. As such the I would deliberately rank the game down (at least the PS3 version) when considering the best games I’ve played this year.

  8. @Murton

I’ve heard that the PS3 version is more buggy and problematic than other versions, so maybe you should try it out on another platform.

  9. hummm is there gonna be another game following morrowind, oblivien? cause those are my faverite games of all time
and the graphics rule, its like you broke a wall, that others could not
and now gaming is at its best!!
