More DLC on the way; coming to PS3 too

This morning we put out a press release with some big announcements for Fallout 3.

Up first, we’re working on DLC for the PlayStation 3. We’ll be releasing Operation: Anchorage in late June, followed by the release of The Pitt and Broken Steel 4-6 weeks apart after. Later this year, PlayStation 3 users will also get…

…our next two DLCs, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta. Coming first to Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows LIVE in June and July, respectively, here’s a brief synopis on both:

* Point Lookout – Explore a massive new swampland area filled with new quests and content.
* Mothership Zeta – The aliens have returned, and they’re pissed. Experience an alien abduction first hand and find out if you’re tough enough to survive.

Finally, we’ve got three more Fallout releases coming to retail this year:

  • Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #1 includes The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage on a disc and will be available for Xbox 360 and PC on May 26.
  • The Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #2 includes Broken Steel and Point Lookout on a disc and will be available for Xbox 360 and PC in August.
  • A Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition will be available in October. It will include the original game plus all five add-ons for $59.99 for Xbox 360 and PS3, and $49.99 for PC.

It’s worth noting that retail versions of the game add-on packs for PS3 are not possible and the DLC will only be available for download online via PlayStation Network.

We’ll have more details on all of these releases soon. In the meantime, you can read the press release here, as well as a new interview with Todd at IGN.

  1. this is good news for ps3 users who can now stop blaming bethesda and giving all kinds of hate.

i just hate to wait for more content. but i will try very, very, very hard.

  2. 🙁 I was really hoping Bethsoft would take a break from DLC to make some very badly needed bugfixes on the PC version, but it seems that the plan is to keep shoveling more DLC onto us. I have not purchased any of the DLC yet because I’m waiting for Bethesda to address HDR flickering and the only partially-fixed VATS issues, and it seems that this will not happen now that even more DLC is on the way.

It’s too much to ask PC customers to buy additional content at this time, as a broken core engine results in a consistently frustrating gameplay experience throughout all of the core and DLC content.

I definitely won’t be as interested in Bethesda products after my experience with Fallout 3, as Bethesda has made it clear that PC customers have been marginalized in favor of optimizing for the now larger console market in which I have no interest in participating.

With that said, I’m happy for PS3 users; they deserve to have an equal content experience since the core game was released on that platform.

  3. Sounds good to me. I have yet to get a computer which won’t explode Star Trek control-panel style if I try to run Fallout 3. So now when I get one next summer, I’ll get to do the whole experience from the get-go! (that is, unless you guys keep releasing stuff into Summer/Fall 2010–which I’m fine with, by the way ;))

  4. “Mothership Zeta”
    Wow talk about random.

So when do we get some Fallout: New Vegas new hype? I want a Fallout nostalgia experience goddammit!

  5. Yes! I got triple the amount back on my taxes than I first thought, so I finally took the plunge and purchased The Pitt and Broken Steel last night, rather than keep trying to win them for free, and started the former. It’s great so far. And I’m very glad to see even more content this summer. Awesome!

Also, hopefully this will stop all the PS3 belly-aching on every news post on Facebook. Highly annoying.

  6. I’m happy more content is being made for Fallout, but I rather see one huge SI type of expansion than these little 4-5 hour DLC’s.

I don’t own a PS3, but I’m happy to see that there getting the DLC, I’m sick of this exclusive crap.

    Nice job Beth!!!

  7. While the PS3 being included (finally) is great news I’m much more interested in knowing the reason behind the exclusivity in the first place, the interview with Todd says it was because of workload while an interview with Sean Brennan says that they signed an agreement, which was it?

I just hope that some much need bugfixing and performance enhancements are made for the PS3 version before we are asked to give any more of our hard earned to Bethesda. Given the performance issues with the core game when things get busy I’d hate to see where the frame rate goes in some of the combat scenes of OA or BS.

Hopefully the reaction to the original exclusivity and the feedback that this move receives will factor into the decision making process when planning DLCs in future titles. Please don’t sell us out again, grow a pair and tell MS that you’re a third party developer and want to keep it that way.

  8. @Murton it was a signed agreement, it was announced at last years E3.

@all the complainers – There are no problems with Fallout 3, just your computers. My friends and I are running it as smooth as butter. Our VATS doesn’t lag, there is no HDR flickering or FPS loss in areas. THE GAME RUNS PERFECT. So fix your computers instead of complaining to them about a perfect game, because they can not fix your hardware for you.

@Bethesda, THANK YOU! Just curious though where did the Alien idea’s come from? I love alien shows on History channel and a lot of people who think they have been abducted say that an alien looking leader told them “we will not let you ruin earth with nuclear war, we will step in”…. Or something along those lines, is that where the basic idea came from or…?

  9. OMG, Todd Howard has so stupid ideas for new DLC’s… In the original Fallouts there weren’t any Aliens. Wanamingos were an experimental creatures which had escaped from the Enclave and in the whole original trilogy there were only a few easter eggs connected with the aliens. You should read the Fallout Bible. I think that Beth is just milking the Fallout franchise making it good for kids. Broken Steel gives you perks, weapons which can be only compared to the “god mode”.

What will we see in the next DLCs? Vampires, nazi-zombies, maybe Optimus Prime fighting with Godzilla? I even forgot that the Fallout was an cRPG game. Thank you Bethesda!

  10. “@all the complainers – There are no problems with Fallout 3, just your computers. My friends and I are running it as smooth as butter. Our VATS doesn’t lag, there is no HDR flickering or FPS loss in areas. THE GAME RUNS PERFECT. So fix your computers instead of complaining to them about a perfect game, because they can not fix your hardware for you.”

Incorrect. While the VATS issues may be due to the computer, the ESP bugs are certainly not as they are universally exhibited by the V1.5 patch.

  11. Thank you. I was starting to lose all hope for DLC to the greatest game ever on PS3.

Best news I’ve read in a long time.

  12. I expected Point Lookout but another one, all I have to say is awesome. As far as I’m concerned I will buy every DLC Bethesda makes for THE GAME (lulz). Can’t wait!

  13. What the … it actually happened? I’ll be getting the DLC for my copy of the PS3 version? And this year?!

I am STOKED. Thank you so much!

  14. @MadCat221 – Then how come me and my friends are not experiencing these bugs? Along with kids in my class that I know play Fallout on their computers that don’t nearly drowned just to start it up?

@Bethesda – Well I just told my fiance this TERRIFIC news…. Her only response was “I wish my Fiance (Me) loved me as much as he does Fallout” I think she wants to murder you guys, since I wake her up almost every night sneaking into bed around 4am after a long night of the Wasteland.

  15. @Billy Zane: You must not be running on SLI/Crossfire setups, as many nVidia and ATI users alike are reporting having experienced the issue on well-maintained/tuned systems with a wide range of driver versions and Windows versions. It seems that disabling SLI/Crossfire at a global or hardware level will cause the HDR flickering to stop, but completely defeats the purpose of having 2+ video cards and makes it seem ridiculous that nVidia lists Fallout 3 as an SLI optimized game.

As for the VATS lag, you can see it in the X-Play interview linked from right here on the Bethesda Blog. The person playing Fallout 3 in the video even impatiently wiggles his mouse around while waiting for the hit percentages to appear!

It’s also been extensively researched and positively confirmed by the user base that VATS percentages seem to vary depending on what video resolution you run at.

You and your friends must also have never tried shooting down grenades in mid-air using VATS, which worked in 1.0; in patches 1.1 and later, the hit percentage for mid-air grenades is always 0%.

Please respect that many frustrated people have researched and discussed these issues extensively, instead of simply hand-waving away our conclusions just because you haven’t noticed them. Thanks.

  16. Some of the comments are straying off topic from the blog post, and there have been comments aimed at offending others that I’ve deleted.

Please be mindful of others, I don’t want to have to close the comments section. thanks

  17. Great news, I have all the dlc so far and will likely end up with the two yet to be released. Mothership Zeta sounds very interesting. Maybe we’ll see some more Alien weaponry hehe…

  18. Can’t wait! You guys are really spoiling us and making the other game makers look bad! LOL Thanks for keeping Fallout 3 the best game ever! Seriously.

  19. I originally passed on Fallout for PS3 due to having simply too many new games to play in the Fall…but I’d be lying if I said not getting the DLC didn’t steer me away from it as well. I’m glad I waited and I will be more than happy to purchase the Game of the Year edition this October with all the content. Thank you very much just get the rest of the DLC for Oblivion to PS3 please 🙂

  20. Sooo… anyone else foreseeing the alien blaster becoming one of the most common weapons in the game?

Is it to early to ask if the level cap is going up again? Or perhaps if we are going to get even more new creatures added to the capital wasteland?

Anyhow… Looking forwards to this. That GOTY package is a great deal but I already have all the DLC so far… I guess it’s just another reason to buy it for my PC when I build a new system.

  21. Great news. Can’t wait. Hm never had any major problems with Fallout on PC either, and yes I’ve been running it on SLI setups aswell as on a non SLI setups. I don’t have much of a VATS lag. If people are complaining about 1,21 secounds average (yes i timed it), they are just a bunch of whiners IMO.
But then again gamers will complain about the strangest thing, even things that only works in theory. Fact is that the software simple can’t keep up with the developement of hardware, so in most cases it’s pretty pointless having a SLI setup or a 4 or 7 cores CPU-system for gaming, just to take a couple of examples.

Just to make it clear that problems with Fallout doesn’t have to occur that often, I’ve tried it on both 32 and 64 bit systems. I’ve never played it on a machine running on vista for more than 30 min. at a time though. The nades problem is the only real complaint i have.
Oh and nvidia driver 185.85 is flawed, as is the cutom with most new Nvidia drivers, so if you are haveing probs with your system after installing this driver just go back to 182,06 or something like that.

  22. Lol, i just got FO3 for the PC because i thought that the ps3 was never going to get the content but atleast we still get the content earler then the ps3. i really hope the 2 new DLC’s will be really cool to. So thx beth U ROCK!!! and when are we going to get some info on FO:vegas any one know a website that might have some info?

  23. I just want to say Bethesda, you guys are the greatest game maker ever. I’m glad my PS3 brethren will get to experience the new facets of Fallout, and I’m superbly excited that you guys are making 2 more for the Xbox/Windows platform. I’d never do this for any other game company, but I’m buying the GOTY edition in addition to buying the DLC when it hits in June/July.

    Keep on making me proud.

  24. This is excellent news for PS3 players! Thank you Bethesda! Can’t wait to fall 2009, I’m buying Fallout 3 right now!

  25. Great News! 🙂

I’m tempted to pick up the game again now for my ps3 but have an important question.

Will the dlc be available for the Europe Psn store(the ps3 oblivion dlc was not).

  26. This is gonna rock, Bethesda are masters of DLC I even loved the horse armour. I really hope for new weapons and armour and would love to get maybe a space suit off one of the aliens, it wouldnt be much good as armour but would look freakin awesome. I have just reached 100 hours with one of my characters and always roleplay with them, with these new addons I will be able to create some new characters and backstories maybe a crazy guy who beleives in aliens LOL. I know I am sad sod off.

  27. FIX THE 1.5 GAME PATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHOULD BE A TOP PRIORITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Well that was unexpected!!! i was only on this blog about 2 maybe 3 weeks ago moaning about the lack of dlc for the ps3, not in the most politest manner either for which i apologize, its like i said though, fallout 3’s my fav game and was gutting to hear 360 users getting extra stuff to do while we left in the dark with a game over screen, am really eager for june now and will buy all the dlc you chuck at the ps3 day 1, pretty sure i’ll pick up the goty edition too in october. The Mothership Zeta stuff sounds intereasting, i remeber stumbling across the alien craft and wondering the rest of the game if aliens or something would appear, needless to say they didnt lol but i think that will make for good dlc, thanks for remebering about us ps3 folk Bethesda, much appreciated 🙂 and yeah, fallout 3 game of the year for sure! possibly even best game ever, cant wait!!!

  29. @Marcus Sawyer – FIX YOUR COMPUTER! Delete some of your codecs or do a fresh install with your drivers, and delete unused system drivers.Im running it fine on ultra.

Everyone needs to stop stealing their thunder and yelling at them for a game that runs smoothly.
