QuakeCon: Panel Coverage at Gamespot

Didn’t have a chance to see the panels and presentations at QuakeCon 2010? No worries — the fine folks at Gamespot have recaps (and some video) for you to catch up on.

One of my personal highlights of the show was attending Rocket Talk — featuring legends Richard “Lord British” Garriott and John Carmack talking about their passion for space exploration. For a summary of the talk, head here. Be sure to watch Garriott’s presentation on his journey to the International Space Station (embedded above) — it’s really amazing stuff.

Gamespot also has a sample of John Carmack’s presentation on Armadillo Aerospace. Check the highlights below….

Being a level designer isn’t always a linear career. Find out why in QuakeCon’s first panel, The World of Design. The panel featured id Software design director Matt Hooper, Splash Damage lead designer Neil Alphonso, Respawn Entertainment lead designer Todd Alderman, and Bethesda Game Studios lead level designer Joel Burgess. For this one, Gamespot’s even got video highlights.

Whether they’re in the studio drinking Cherry Coke or shooting guns in the desert, sound designers sure can find ways to be creative. Let There Be Sound featured Christian Sweetman of Splash Damage Studios; Zack Quarles and Christian Antkow of id Software; and Mark Lampert of Bethesda Softworks discussing a wide variety of topics related to sound design in games.

Learn about Emil Pagliarulo’s dark side in Building Immersive Worlds and Stories, where he was joined by Human Head’s Chris Rhinehart and iyr new colleagues at Arkane Studios, Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio.

Last Friday’s Art of the Game panel brought together Art Directors Matt Carofano (Bethesda Game Studios), Olivier Leonardi (Splash Damage), Stephan Martiniere (id Software), and Viktor Antonov (Arkane Studios). Find out about their work and the games that inspire them.

Last but not least, Bethesda’s own Todd Howard joined id Software’s Tim Willits and Respawn Entertainment cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella for Building Blockbusters. Definitely worth reading about.

That’s all for now. As we catch up on QuakeCon coverage online, we’ll be sure to share it with you.
