New Beta Update available on Steam (Update)

Update 2/23: A new version of the Beta Update, 1.4.27, is now live. It adds the following change:

  • Followers now sneak properly when player is sneaking.

Original Post: Today on Steam we’ve uploaded a new Beta Update (1.4.26) highlighted by some tweaks modders have requested for the Skyrim Workshop.

Reminder: This patch is still in development. Apply the update at your own risk and only if you are affected by issues outlines below.

UPDATE 1.4.26


  • Fixed issue with downloading mods when you are subscribed to more than 50 mods
  • Fixed crash when loading a subscribed mod that has been removed from Workshop by the author
  • Mod load order functionality


  • Fixed occasional crashes when loading a save that relies on plugins/master files that no longer exist
  • Fixed issue where controls would become unresponsive while charging an enchanted weapon
  • Fixed issue where controls would occasionally become unresponsive while switching from third to first person while using the Arcane Enchanter
  • Fixed issue where controls would become unresponsive if activating a crafting station with autorun active
  • Fixed issue where keyboard would fail if Rename Item was selected before choosing the number of charges, while using Arcane Enchanter
  • Fixed several issues with remapping buttons while using an Xbox 360 controller
  • Fixed issue where pressing Escape button after fast traveling but before the loading would cause certain menus to stop working properly

If you opt into the Beta, be sure to back up your saved games or simply be careful not to overwrite your existing saves. If you decide to opt out of the beta program, your old saves will still work with the current release of Skyrim (v 1.4).

As a reminder, to get the beta, you need to do the following:

  1. Log into Steam
  2. Click on Steam in the upper menu
  3. Select Settings
  4. Under the Account tab, go to the Beta Participation section and select Change.
  5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Skyrim Beta.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Steam will now restart. After Steam restarts, Skyrim will be updated to the Beta version currently available.

If you decide you don’t want to run the Beta anymore, redo steps 1 – 4. At the drop down, select NONE – Opt out of all beta programs. Let Steam restart, and Skyrim will automatically update itself back to the latest released version.

  3. Will this fix the navmesh bug or the broken collision for cells beyond -64<x<64 ? These are major bugs preventing large mods even starting

  4. I still see nothing about fixing random crashes to desktop that thousands of people are experiencing when fast travelling, walking or doing nothing at all :/

    • I havnt been able to [ay in a week because the game crashed when it has done loading and i am playing the beta Shyrim which was supposed to address this issue. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • Now if only they’d make the MOUSE control better…by making it so the dialog choice we click on is the one that gets chosen by the game. Yuck.

      • Yeah, that’s a shame. :/

        A tip:
        I always keep the mouse away from the dialogue choices, and use W and S to scroll and E to choose. But sometimes the dialogue options are still weird, so to ensure that the white text really is the text that’s selected, I scroll to the bottom or the top.

          • SkyUI has nothing to do with this particular problem. It neither touches the dialog UI or addresses the UI’s sensitivity to mouse placement while selecting dialog choices.

          • SkyUI is great, but i rather have Bethesda fix the accuracy of the pointer and second, the issue with really low sound, thats been there since day 1 and has not been addresed.

    If you could add official support for Kinect with Skyrim on PC that would be amazing! Especially now that Microsoft has released a Kinect for developers/ programmers. I am assuming soon there will be an official Kinect released for the the end user (consumer). I know you can set up Skyrim to work with Kinect on your own however it seems slightly complicated, therefore some official Bethesda support or Mod would be greatly appreciated. On the pc version of Skyrim with the keyboard and mouse and or gamepad can you do things such as instantly (with one key) switch your clothing or drink a potion? Here are two links to incredible videos of someone using Kinect, FAAST, and VAC with complete control over Skyrim.

I agree with Dingus above, dialog screens, alchemy screens, enchanting screens you can navigate with up and down or scroll wheel but if your mouse is on corner of screen but above or below your intended selection it will select w/e is above or below, sometimes 2-3 selections above. I say make it if the mouse is not above the target selection, ignore its placement. I also think the quest menu is a pain. Why is it not in the TAB menu? And why is it not the 1st selection in the Esc. menu? I use quest menu much more than load save menu. My 2c.

  8. Still needs a search by keyword box (title and description) so type in keywords, like “werewolf tweeks,” “camping,” “random uber sward,” or the like.

  9. I bought Skyrim for the Xbox, but I’m yet to get it on PC.
    Even still, I can still join the beta program but nothing happens, unsurprisingly.

  10. It’s pretty great that you guys have managed to bring out another patch so quickly. I haven’t encountered any of these bugs, but it’s still good to see them being addressed.

    But I’m also wondering if there were any plans to patch the Creation Kit?

  11. When are more quest patches coming? I still can’t turn in a larceny item, I have a permanent “join the college of witerhold” quest that wont go away despite my being the archmage (which also is the constant destination of my clarivoyance spell) and I’m not sure if I was supposed to get both the ring and armor from hircine.

  12. Read a book from your inventory and close it, try to read another and you can’t scroll through them or highlight them with the mouse any has been there since day 1 and it is annoying

  13. So… there’s still that annoying horizontal autoaim that makes medium distance archery shots on moving targets impossible to lead correctly?

    Can we please get this as an option?

    It’s not a feature, it feels more like a bug imho.

  14. Perhaps the ability to upload esm/esp file packages to steam?

    And some type of optional esp file loading ability.

    Example: Upload esm file. Since ck does not allow direct editing of esm files, I need to upload an esp update or bug fix. But some users are just fine with the current esm. Yet others want to install the esp. Or perhaps there are two esps, both with different options/addons. See where I’m going here?

  15. good to see a new patch is in the works even if it seems mostly to be a pc based patch at the moment.

    any chance of a few more quest fixes being added down the line? ill met by moonlight is still broken on my game for instance(well more the elk needs a repathing job so he isnt stuck in an area i cant get to) and ive heard of a few other quests that arent working right here and there(not got a list but im sure youve heard of a few) also dragons seem to be acting strange sometimes as ive had more than a few just fly around roaring but not attacking anything before just vanishing all of a sudden, and the other night one atacked me out of nowhere as its roar was broken.

  16. That’s something I can get behind. Using the mouse, sometimes I had to reload the game back hours because selecting the wrong dialogue in certain situations is disastrous.

    I tried an Xbox controller and couldn’t stand it.

  17. Any plans to fix some of the completely devastating bugs in the creation kit– like the completely broken creation of NPCs, broken NavMeshes, vanishing large statics, and a number of other issues?

  18. Does this include a fix that (tested without mods in vanilla 1.3 and 1.4) fixes the game going into a mode where FPS starts dropping to nearly half every 5 to 10 seconds when you are doing nothing.

    This “bugged mode” occurs after leaving the character idle such that the camera centers to the player and starts going in circles around the player “pan mode” – which looks very ugly as the speed of the pan is affected by the environment render rate – eg it might fluctuate from 15 FPS to 90 FPS within few seconds.

    After player moves the PC mouse (win7-64 8 GB 8800GT latest drv), “pan mode” exits. Now if you leave the computer for another minute and come back, the “bugged mode” should have kicked in with certainty.

    The FPS will now be cycling from the current scene normal FPS to almost half the normal FPS.

    This bugged mode will seem to exist until game is restarted.

    It’s kind of hard to miss on a 8800 GT since in a heavy scene the regular FPS can be around 30 FPS, so half of that is 15 FPS and makes the game unplayable when it cycles between 30 and 15 FPS every 5-10 seconds or so.

    I imagine your development systems have better GPU. With those this bug would be perhaps impossible to notice as the FPS would stay above 30 all the time even when bugged.

    To see the FPS, install FRAPS so it will show the FPS counter.

    I have to have FRAPS running all the time BTW because when using shader modifications (enbseries) (They weren’t enabled when testing the FPS cycling issues of course) only FRAPS will capture the screenshots the way I see them in game.

  19. IMPORTANT!! I just re-validated the bug.

    It does NOT repro if you are standing up. It seems you have to be in “hidden” mode (Ctrl key pressed) when the camera goes to pan-mode after idling.

    (addn: I have c2d 2.4. Another issue: After exiting cedna mines theres a scripted battle scene where FPS drops to 10 FPS and this is CPU limited, confirmed with vanilla)

    I’d like to clarify that when enbseries is installed, it’s possible to disable the shader mods with shift+f12. However this was not how I tested the existence of the FPS cycling bug after Pan Mode. I used a completely clean install for this test with no 3rd party mod DLL’s around. Of course I didn’t need FRAPS running either to see the FPS drop, just to confirm the range of the drop (30 to ~15 FPS)

    I tried to repro this situation in other games by leaving them idle but since that didn’t repro the bug, it’s 100% certain this is a bug in Skyrim.

    The save game I used to test was early in the game, had only the Golden Claw quest and one other. I was in the outlook house/catered half-bridge that sits on top of the water in the riverwood village for testing this.

  20. here’s a http address for the save game in Riverwood I described. The character is already in sneak/hide mode. Just leave it there, have FPS counter running (or slow enough cpu and gpu to have it drop below 20 fps while watching the water flow speed). Then after the auto-pan begins, move mouse slightly to exit it and wait for the bugged FPS cycle.

  21. Another issue I have seen reported and confirmed on two PC’s: When having a follower following when going to Yngol Barrows, the game crashes to desktop in PC and on Xbox 360 it just freezes. Or the screen may be black while in the dungeon. I have not tried if this still exists in current beta.

  22. Can we get a CK update as well? A lot of good mods are on hold right now until some major CK issues are fixed.

    Oh also glad you’re putting in load order options for Workshop. That’ll get me to re-enable Workshop support on my mods. Another feature that would be great is leveled list merging a la Wyre Bash.

  23. … I tried to repro and have a save for you for the Yngol Barrows CTD issue but for whatever reason, I’ve not changed anything, it just doesn’t crash today and I can’t get the blackness in the dungeon either.

  25. Great! How about making the game work with Eyefinity? I do not see why I have to find 3rd party programs to make Eyefinity work when obviously it can be done via these hacks that get broken with every update. There is not excuse in short changing the PC community with console ports to PC when it should be the other way around. The slow death of PC gaming is because developers no longer design for the PC potential with Eyefinity, Multicore processing, SLI/Crossfire, surround sound, DirectX 11, etc then port to Console the stripped down version as it use to be. Maybe you all need to play the game in Eyefinity at least 3 screen to realize once you do it is hard to play any game on a single screen after that… But hey thanks for the update… WooHoo

  26. I assume it is risky to run existing mods with the new beta patch. Now that I’ve crossed that line, it sadly makes me hesitant to try out the beta.

  27. My game keeps crashing randomly i think because of the mods that i have installed dont fit in with this patch hope the real patch comes out soon.

  29. I just heard about a mod that adds a dialog option with that Blades woman that wants you to kill the dragon Partinox or however his name is spelled.
    It`s the option to lie to her about killing him.
    Can you please add an option like that?
    Alot of people don`t want to kill him, but we also want to be able to continue the Blades quests.
    Pretty please.

        We have a dragon side in the history, is ridiculous kill Paarthurnax just because he done bad things. The first emperor have a blood history in hands, during several wars. To fix the quest, we need kill the blades, they do not have any other reason to exist.
        The sky temple is for the dragonborn future clan and Paarthurnax, as a mentor.

  30. Can you please consider adding a download progress bar to the launcher? I would really like to know how long I have to wait for a subscribed mod to download, because some of them go into the GB range. It isn’t a huge issue, but I think it’s definitely something that should have been on the launcher from the beginning, and shouldn’t be too hard to add.

  31. I bought oblivion at launch in 2006. The game really became “stable” after many updates from 2008, 2009, etc.
    Skyrim apparently has a horrendous navmesh, inherited from Oblivion and Fallout3, and so on. I believe it by the year 2014, the game must be better in performance and stability in the three platforms. Anyway, the next Elder Scrolls maybe in 2015? so, they have time.

  32. Since there seems to be a lot of control related fixes in this I thought I would mention that when remapping keyboard controls the UI doesn’t update for me.

    In my case I switched [E] with [SPACE] which didn’t update in any menus. I also switched [F] and [R] which had an unfortunate side effect of putting me in third person when taking all items in an inventory screen added to the UI not updating after the switch. After that I changed the “Jump to third person controls” from [R] to [P] because I thought I would never need to use that and it would fix my earlier problem. This only caused more problems, because now to rename something in the enchanting window, I have to press [P] even though the UI says to press [R]. The UI tells me to press [F] to favorite something and I have to press [P] to actually do it. These problems are all over the place for me: crafting, reading a book, inventory menus, etc.

    It’s a nightmare keeping track of all the changes, and I honestly hope that I am not the one and only person having issues with this since I haven’t seen anyone else mention anything like this.

  33. Is there any way to disable the zoom/fov change-like effect that happens when you switch from walking to sprinting?

    That makes some people motion sick and I’m not the first one to notice this if you google around.

  34. Also a proper first person mode in the game options would be welcome. So you see yourself if you look down in 1st person and also can ride the horse in 1st person view without any artifacts when looking around.

    These would up the immersion a whole lot!

  35. There’s a pseudo-1st person horse riding mod (with some big issues when using workbenches reported) with 8000+ downloads at nexus. I think you can count that as 8000 comments requesting a proper immersion settings for first person players.

  36. After going to beta I had one ctd after about 2 minutes which was about 4 times longer than it had been today when I started having ctd every 30 seconds. De-fragged my game and reloaded and now I no longer have ctds that I know of. ( I still save every minute or so just in-case until this issue gets resolved completely. but otherwise awesome fix

  37. Ugh… I didn’t have auto-updates enabled and yet the game updated. Now waiting for SKSE to update a compatibility patch because the game won’t start. I love updates, but I don’t love it when it ignores the option to auto-update. This is the second time this happens.
