Now on Steam: 1.5 Beta Update featuring new kill cameras

From the memes to the mods to the amazing stories that continue to be told, we’ve been blown away by the continued community support for Skyrim. All of it has driven us to make the game even better, and we’re excited to start sharing news on upcoming features and content.

It all starts with our upcoming 1.5 title update – available now as a Beta Update on Steam and arriving soon for Xbox 360 and PS3. In the release notes below, you’ll notice we’ve not only made fixes to the game, but also introduced some new features. One of our favorite additions are the new kill cameras for ranged and magic attacks. Watch the video above for a sneak peek.

Look familiar? The new kill cams were featured as a concept in the Game Jam sizzle shown during Todd Howard’s DICE keynote. We plan on adding even more features with upcoming free updates and game add-on content.

After the break, read the current release notes for 1.5, as well as information on how you can grab the beta update on Steam.

  1. Anything happening with Karliah in the Twilight Sepulchre? It’s the only faction quest I have left, and I can’t complete it. Not restarting after over 150 hours just for that.

  2. will the quest “jagged crown” be getting a fix on the xbox 360? i cant start the quest because i cant get into the place where the crown is, there is a wall i cant get past at the very begining!!

  3. Add the ability to RESPEC your characters. Hell even Blizzard added it to Diablo 2 and WoW, it’s essential for RPGs to try different styles.

  4. This is great, but when do you think you could implement that flow based water shader? The current water in skyrim looks absolutely horrible and lazy, i refuse to play the game till its fixed.

  5. This is the best patch yet But I’m having one bug and I’m not sure where to report it .. I think its due to the shadows on grass .. But all grass seems to be much darker and has a weird glitchy shadow over it from a distance .. if I view it from some angles it causes the grass to turn dark/bright off and on and I dont even see shadows on the grass.

Any way to disable this feature? .. Its surely broken on my GPU “GT 550”

  6. Update: Here are some screens of the grass shadowing glitches “Yes I have an ENB mod on but I have tried it with the mod uninstalled and had the same issues”

    Dark while looking down:

    Bright while looking up:

    Weird Striping overlaying on grass:

This is all very noticeable in motion.

  7. That’s all very nice, but it’s still unplayable on XP with realtek sound in Stereo as it sends the speech to a non-existent centre speaker.

Also, please fix the bug that disables the keyboard when using a controller, as it means I can’t use the extra keys provided by mods, or the amazing STVC profile for VAC.

  8. I’m glad they’re still working on the game, but I wish that my game-ending bug had been fixed.

Clearing Fort Hraggstead does not complete the “Joining the Legion” quest – even though the Imperial soldiers have started appearing at the fort, indicating that I did successfully clear out the Bandits.

I don’t want to keep playing the game with the entire Civil War questline closed off to me, so the game has been sitting on my shelf for months now 🙁

  9. Bethesda, to show my gratitude for making Lydia marriable, I will gladly adopt every single orphan in Riften. If that becomes an option next in DLC or something. I support that – it’s nice to see someone was thinking that way!

    Thank you again.

  10. I’m probably the only one saying this, but is there going to be a way to turn this feature off? I’m playing on an xbox 360, if I wanted to see more violence, I would have bought a different game.

  11. This looks awesome and I can’t wait, but out of curiosity do you plan to rebalance magic, or at least improve it in dlc? It, much like being a werewolf doesn’t scale well above level 40, and I love both of those features so it would be nice to continue using them throughout an entire play through.. Thanks.

    • Yes, if only we could turn them OFF! Seriously, if you’re going to add new content, at least make it optional. Mods are optional. Updates that include new content that can’t be disabled are not. Do you (BGS) really want to inspire mod authors to create mods that specifically disable new content because you didn’t provide the option to turn them off?

  12. PLEASE FIX the end of ‘Revealing the Unseen” (Winterhold College Quest)!!! After you return to the Archmage and help break down the barrier, he confronts Ancano, everything goes white, you wake up and have a little convo with Mirabelle which completes the quest but then everything goes back to normal. The next quest doesn’t start, Mirabelle gets up and acts like nothing happened. Ancano walks out of his little barrier and will talk to you like nothing happened. And Savos Aren is a dead of meat just lying outside of the college and you can’t interact with his body at all and no one seems to notice him.

I haven’t been able to progress in the Winterhold College missions for months now because of this. I’ve seen many other people have the same problem! PLEASE FIX so that I can become Archmage!

  13. id like to see the nord hero bow and the final leveled version of the nightingale blade fixed so they can be inproved at the grind stone. i know there are more instances of this but i dont know them off the top of my head

  14. All this continued support for the game AFTER it has being released and doing so well is outstanding. You and CDProjekt put Day-1 Dlc companies to shame. I wish there’d be at least one kill move for left attacks though.

How exactly is the suplex triggered? Looked like a sneak kill, which is slightly hilarious but not unfathomable. Much better than the ridiculous “i snap yo neck”

  15. I still need a fix for the “revealing the unseen” quest when u travel to Mzulft for the first time and the synod inside does not die and the key is unobtainable to continue on with the quest. The easiest fix would be just remove the lock from that door because that lock servers no purpose besides another chance at a game breaking bug. If there is a fix to this soon i would really appreciate it hopefully in an upcoming patch (fingers crossed). I cant revert to a save because i figured it was going to be fixed soon and continued on with the other questlines and im around 150 hours of gameplay after i first encountered the problem 🙁

  16. So happy with the new killcams, I was getting tired with the same assassination animation over and over again. Just hope the ranged ones won’t be too annoyingly frequent.
I’m still hoping for a fix for the invisibility spell though, it looks so weird right now. Isn’t it supposed to show the same glow around your hands that it does in the spells menu?

  17. Any news on whether the “Alduin’s Wall” bug is fixed? It’s not in the patch notes here, but I was wondering if, and when, it’s going to be fixed for the console versions (I’m playing on the PS3).

I’ve been stuck in Sky Haven Temple for a while now because Esbern and the other Blades member won’t go in with me, they just stand before the first puzzle bridge and mutter something like, “I can’t wait to see what’s inside.” It’s really frustrating. :/

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

  18. I was hoping 1.5 would have more bugfixes than 1.4 (and bugfixes for the extremely obvious ones, like the Letrush duplicates outside Whiterun). Ah well, at least there’ll be sweet new killmoves.

BTW, that suplex is awesome. Any chance that more unarmed killmoves, like a dropkick or a piledriver, be added in later patches? lol

  19. I hope you guys get around to fixing the Nightingale Blade smithing upgrade issue, and the Hjeimer house mannequin problems.

It’s kind of a shame though because I basically retart each time a title update comes around because some of the fixes are so game-changing that things I simply passed on the first time around were simply because they were bugged or broken. Something you guys really need to devise a solution for.

Because at this time, I don’t know how interested/patient I am to re-experience old content for the ‘umphteenth’ time just to experience stuff I intended to on the first play-through.

  20. What about instruments? They are indeed in-game items, they might as well have some use. Not to mention, there’s even a Bards’s College uselessly placed in Solitude.

  21. Played like 3 hours and only got 1(!) Killcam with about 25 enemies killed by bow or magic – very very poor.

In fairness I had 3rd person killmoves installed before via the Workshop and then disabled and deleted it.

How do I get the game to show me permanent kill moves like in Fallout 3

  22. It’s a minor, silly point, but it would be cool if spouse characters (I’m looking at you, Ysolde) would automatically upgrade to better clothing if you reverse pickpocket it to them.

  23. Any chance of getting options to disable grass shadows and kill cams? The shadows give me too much of a performance hit, and I never liked the cams to begin with.

  24. I have to say that I am impressed with the new updates and free content. Stuff like this is unheard of with other game companies now of days so good job Beth, keep up the good work 😀

  25. Thank you very much for continuing your work.
Could you tell us, is it planned to fix a bug which prevents general Tullius from speaking about going to negotiations at the High Hrotgar if the joining Legion quest is in progress?

  26. Nice work, thanks for the great support Bethesda! I’d love to see the new kill cams quickly! I’m not sure whether “grass shadows” were necessary ‘though, or rather, please allow us to decide for ourselves and make it optional? Not everyone has a killer computer, and I remember my Oblivion game suffering from serious lag everytime I ran along the coast from the Gold Coast (got a new computer of course by now, but still …).

  27. NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Now we won’t be able to superlevel smithing nearly as fast!!!!!! Oh well, the new kill cams make up for it. -_-

  28. I’d love if you could dismember and cripple different body parts on an enemy like in the Fallout games. I know it would be a pain for all the body modders, but image how much more interesting it would be if you could pick off an incoming bandit in the knee, forcing him to limp forward and making him a weaker opponent?

  29. I hope that with this patch 1.5 finally i can meet the disappeared Erandur, complete the quest “Waking Nightmare” and take my last achievment “Oblivion Walker” 🙂 thank you 🙂

  30. Is it possible that we’ll see a continuation of the main story in a future DLC? :O Defeating Alduin was awesome but it had absolutely no effect on the environment, unlike the closing of the Oblivion gates. Heck, not even the credits rolled. With all this talk about Talos, you could take it to the next level by letting us interact with him in some mystical way.

  31. This is one awesome Patch Bethesda. Keep up the great Work. And to all you People who with every new Patch complain that why your Bug xyz is not fixed yet. When the first Patch was rushed out, it broke some Stuff that previously wasn’t broken. And all of you complained about it. Now Bethesda fixes the Stuff more carefully and fixes only smaller Chunks of Bugs at a time. And they do it to make sure each Fix works as intended and has no Side Effects. So please stop pushing Bethesda because “your” Bug is not fixed yet or they will start bring back rushed Patches again. And I’m sure almost all Bugs will be fixed eventualy, you just need to give them the Time they need. Thank you for listening and thank you Bethesda for making Skyrim a Great Game and for making it better with every Patch. And if you ask me Bethesda, what Stuff from the Developer Jam should we make into DLC, i would say everything 😀

  32. NICE! I like the bug fixes and some of the new additions. However, please fix Markarth! Like the whole city is a glitch fest of epic proportions (Forsworn Conspiracy, anyone? :P). Dawnstar is buggy too (specifically anything involving the Jarl).

I’m sure most of this is aware to you guys and you’re just making your way to these problems but just thought I’d bring them up.

  33. Any word on a fix for quest Dragonseekers (ID: CR14)? Farkas or Vilkas both offer it after you’ve released Kodlak. If you’ve already killed the dragon at Ancient’s Ascent, the quest can’t be completed and you can’t get rid of them. They can’t be interacted with and you can’t get any other followers. They are also immortal so enemies can’t kill and you can’t kill. I’ve resorted to using Freezing Shout on them outside dungeons just to get away from them for awhile.
