Kinect Support Coming to Skyrim

Fully knowing that you can’t get enough of your favorite dragon shouts, we’re pleased to announce that Kinect for Xbox 360  support is coming to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Available for free as a title update slated for release this month, Skyrim Kinect for Xbox 360 Support will feature more than 200 Voice Commands… including the game’s dragon shouts.

In addition to Dragon Shouts, the Kinect for Xbox 360 integration offers voice commands throughout the game including Hotkey Equipping, Follower Commands, and all Menus (Items, Magic, Map, Barter, Container, Favorites, and Skills). With Voice Commands, quickly create and load saves during gameplay and access menus and inventories. Skyrim’s Kinect for Xbox 360 Support also adds new functionality including special map functions, additional hotkey options, and the ability to sort inventory items by name, weight, and value.

To get an early look at Kinect for Xbox 360  support, watch the video above featuring programmer Ricardo Gonzalez, who put together the preliminary concept for Kinect for Xbox 360 Support during the Skyrim Game Jam.

A full list of Voice Commands will be revealed in the coming weeks, and we’ve got more Skyrim news coming. Bethesda Game Studios has been hard at work on creating the first set of game add-ons that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. This additional content will add new quests, locations, features, and much more to the world of Skyrim. Stay tuned for more details.

  1. You know it’s basically a way to get people to buy a kinect and nothing more or maybe Microsoft paid bethesda to do this since this concept worked so well with Mass Effect 3. Also fallout 4 nao.

  2. that voice command stuff shouldn’t be exclusive because everyone has a mic. If you want to make some money Bethesda add move support, id love to build up my muscles in real life buy swing my move controller around in an rpg with sword and shield.

  3. I have updated my skyrim but every time I try to use the kinect to ‘”shout” or navigate to skills it doest work. nor does any other feature that the update has announced. if you can help me please email me.

  4. I’m really sick of seeing the comments section of this website overrun with negative feedback; Bethesda have made a truly great game and are clearly trying their hardest to rectify any small issues/bugs that remain in the game, you’ve got to remember that Bethesda have a relatively small workforce compared to other developers. Those asking whether this feature will be available to PC users with mics or PS3 players with bluetooth headsets, the answer is almost definitely going to be “no”. Kinect has a sophisticated voice recognition system that can understand, comprehend and process an expansive list of vocal commands; standard microphones/headsets cannot do this. Also, for everybody bitching and moaning about Xbox exclusivity for the DLC, please think logically. Microsoft clearly approached Bethesda and offered them a lot of money to make the content exclusive to the 360, presumably to boost sales on their platform. If I was in Bethesda’s shoes, I’d have agreed. Skyrim is an amazing game, just like every other Elder Scrolls title to date; if you don’t like it, or have encountered issues with the game, either quit playing it or wait until the next patch. I, personally, have had a virtually bug-free 150 hours with Skyrim, and I’m going to enjoy many more. Props to Bethesda.

    • AMEN! THANK YOU!!! I couldn’t agree more with you! Half the people on this website are just whining and complaining I feel so sorry for the developers and all the BS they probably have to read or hopefully laugh at.

I have one quest that’s bugged in my game and its funny because I really don’t even care theirs so many other quests to do!

  5. This is what you have been hard at work on beth? Seriously? We, your fans are waiting in anticipation for you to release dlc, and this is what you have been working on?

Kinect is garbage, it will always be garbage. You have never pissed me off bethesda, even with all the bugs your games have, but I am now pissed.

  6. I know you are busy with Skyrim but I see that May is coming up and in 2002 may, Morrowind came to stores and I was wanting to know if you were planning on making a 10 year anniversary of the game, or maybe adding Morrowind to Skyrim?

    • Ah, there it is. Just wanna say, as a PS3 user, this looks cool. The organizational stuff, fast travel, and favorites swapping are more interesting than using the Shouts.

  7. Also, fellow PS3 users, don’t be too harsh just yet. Maybe they are also working on exclusive content for Playstation Move…?

    • What so they can give us more bugs. How about they just send me my £50 back i spent buying the game.

  8. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I bought a Kinect. And I personally think this is way cool. My fav is the organizing of storage and inventory. That is my most missed feature from Oblivion. Thanks Bethesda and I tilt my hat to you.

  9. Oh come on… we’re dying for news of DLC so we can have fun with Skyrim again and you give us this bit of news that will only affect a small subset of a subset of Skyrim players?

We need DLC info so we have something to look forward to. At least let us know if the announcement is part of this ‘big April surprise’.

  10. I’m happy to see that Bethesda is adding voice commands to Skyrim. Just as question though: will, at some point, PC and PS3 users benefit from them too or will this be a Xbox-only feature?

  11. Stop crying about this, they’re just trying to make the game more fun in different ways. Adding more quests will just be boring after you beat them. This will allow play of the game in a more interactive way.

  12. What the heck is wrong with you guys? How many companies release FREE content for games that is actually pretty cool. People cry when EA releases new shoe-laces for madden for $10, but this isn’t ok either.

The game is massive and if you have done everything possible in it already, good for you, that means you have gotten probably 200+ hours of gameplay. They have said they are working on the DLC, and maybe you should be patient and let them release a quality product. I dont think you are gonna die, and stop feeling entitled to new content.

If you are crying because you have a PC and cant have this, shut up, you have so much more content that the consoles dont have its unreal. If you have a PS3 (Im an Xbox guy), then you have a decent argument, but there are different perks to having different companies products, thats life. And thats my rant for the week. Haha. Thank you Bethesda!

  13. As PC users are missing out on this one, any chance you could release the dragon-werewolf high five image as consolation? It’d make a great wallpaper…

  14. Dang it! Local electronics store that is closing down had massive discounts on all stock, including vidya and vidya accessories. I think they had Kinect, brand new for $35 or something. You can work it out for yourself why I’m a little disappointed ;_;

Anyway, great to see BGS working on stuff like this on the side, while we all (well most of us anyway) patiently wait for the expansions/DLC.

Still playing Skyrim now and then, since 11/11/11 of course 🙂

  15. I really like this, and especially the fact that it is free! I do not have Skyrim for the Xbox 360, but still, it is a great thing of you to do. 🙂

And I must say I like the last paragraph (Well, apart from the Xbox 360 exclusive, but I understand that one.), so I am eagerly awaiting more news about your plans!

  16. voice features are vary impressive but will steam/pc get this too it should be possible i know mass effect 3 on origin can do this not a great way of doing it ether but skyrim will do a much better job of this it looks.
will it come to PC? too
    it’s only mic related stuff!

  17. It is very cool reliable stuff to play with Skyrim feature. It has some extraordinary tactic and skills that some people should how to use it! I can’t wait to bring more new upcoming game again! Thanks for your greatest effort!

  18. I don’t think this counts as one of the two 360-exclusive add-ons promised. Look at the wording. This is being released as a free title update, not an add-on. Pretty sure this is going to be Xbox-only, either permanently or at least for a while… the Kinect is designed with voice-recognition in mind (as well as motion), whereas the typical microphone, is not.

  19. Umm… I think I’m in love with you, Bethesda. Will you marry me? You could totally set up shop in my swanky pad in Solitude (literally, you’ll need to sell some stuff; that mortgage ain’t cheap). I don’t have any “help”, but there will be a big burly lady living with us and following me around like a little lost puppy. But that’s cool, though, because if you don’t like it, now I can tell her directly to bugger off!

Yeah, that went a bit too far. Seriously, though, this is great. Ever since Mass Effect 3 got most of it’s voice commands spot-on, I’ve been wishing other games would provide this kind of support. Just don’t try to add in motion support, because the Kinect, while having a good sense of hearing, is blind as a bat, even with those coke-bottle spectacles that Nyko put out. Looking forward to the update!

  20. No offense, but how come PS3 is getting ripped off. Xbox gets first dlc AND voice support. PC gets community modding. All PS3 gets is glitches, lag, and bugs.

  21. Bethesda,

Being that you can plug in a Xbox 360 into a windows 7 pc and it is recognized and that there is a Kinnect for Windows released (for developers) can you please add this option to the pc version? Or make it an update for pc users to use with there existing microphone? At the very least can you reply to this and share your plans. I know there are pc mods that can do most of this however something official would be appreciated?

    • Thank you for pointing out a link. I don’t play on the PC but know of the mods and I’m pretty tired of the people saying PC is getting ripped off by this update.

    • Microphone only collects sound. Some other things (program, or hardware) is required to convert the sound into meaningful English words.

For other games like Binary Domain, it’s in-game program.

For Skyrim and Mass Effect3, it’s Kinect.

In-game program requires money (either the Developer spends time to write it by themselves, or buy 3rd-party program). But Kinect is free (I guess?) and ready for developer to use.

And MS will maintain the conversion quality, by continuous system update. Developer can worry one less thing.

So, Kinect is of course not the only way to do Voice Control, but it’s an convenient and cheap way (from developer’s perspective).

  22. Okay, so I know that Microsoft paid you a lot of money to alienate your fans with this exclusivity deal. We all know that the number of people who actually decided to buy the game on the 360 instead of whatever other platform they had planned to buy it on is minimal, so Microsoft has at least wasted their money.

    But can you at least answer a simple question;

Would you be voiding your contract with MS if these first two exclusive DLC packs were absolutely minuscule in size?

Can you not just put together a DLC which consists of a single new weapon and nothing else, then another which has a hat or something, then that satisfies your arrangement with Microsoft? Because that way you could just get straight onto releasing the real DLC on all platforms.

Because really, you’re not giving the 36o players a bonus here. You’re just giving everyone else a kick in the teeth. Admittedly the PC gamers have been treated well up to this point with the addition of the Steam Workshop and “unofficial” add ons, but think of the PS3 players at least. You’ve given them NOTHING, and as I understand that’s where the game has the worst technical bugs.

Get it together. You’re not making any friends by doing this.

    • Look I know your corporate culture is to not respond to criticism but there is a very fine line between not responding and simply ignoring.

You did the same thing with Fallout 3’s DLC and received the same response, what did you expect to happen this time? Why did you do it again?

    • Why spend a bunch of money trying to fix whats most likely their smallest market of users? (PS3)

Seriously why are you even trying to talk to them about their deal with Microsoft?

Its simple 99% of the time you go where the money is at and when a multi billion dollar corporation tells you to do something and then gives a bunch of money YOU DO IT.

      • I didn’t even see this last post about Fallout 3 LMAO dude just quit playing video games an throw your console out the window

  23. I am going to love this, THANK YOU. Btw, Blood on Ice is still broken, anyway you change the quest for people who have it broken. Say, if the game can tell if it is broken, to not have it affect the House? Sorry I don’t know if this is the place to put it, but many still have it not working…

  24. Are you serious… Just… Why Bethesda? WHY? This is pointless. And the item sorting should’ve ALREADY BEEN IN. Release some actual content! This measly little thing was by far the DUMBEST thing at the game jam. Give me some better textures at LEAST, and give me something to actually look forward to.

This game came out in November, this is the first DLC that you came out with, and it’s dumb. I don’t want to shout at a screen. At least tell us what’s coming up next. Give us something! I want so badly to believe you aren’t just sitting around doing nothing good, but you aren’t really showing me different. You have a talented team. Make quality content and stop shouting at a screen.

  25. Stupid microsoft and its monopoly over everything its time for change the only reason for the month late release for everyone ekse is to make xbox players feel special since they are being cheated into paying for online uses they cant even get updates without gold or silvermembership microsoft is corrupt and its time for REVALUtION, REVALUTION!!!

  26. obviously like your web site but you have to test the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very bothersome to inform the reality then again I’ll certainly come again again.

  27. Well david, i could tell that you are just having a rage moment, so ill forgive you. First microsoft just is paying extra to be loyal to xbox 360 users. Second we dont need gold to download things. Third they are not corrupt. And fourth shouting something wont work.

  28. I wish all the Xbox 360 owners would stop throwing a fit about this being the supposed DLC that they get 30 days before everyone else. It’s not. It’s a “title update” (as mentioned in the original article) that is just enabling Kinect capability.
Yes it’s cool. Am I going to buy a Kinect for my Xbox just for this? Absolutely not. It’s just a small “patch,” if you will, that will allow Kinect owners a little variety in how they can play the game.
We will get our DLC soon enough. Just be patient. This is not our “30-day Xbox exclusive content.” They even say, “Bethesda Game Studios has been hard at work on creating the first set of game add-ons that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360.”
This is not the first set…

  29. Will the UI improvements be made available on PS3 or has our patch support ended now that DLC development has begun?

Furthermore, given the poor performance of the PS3 version from the numerous memory leaks, will we see further optimisation so that when we’re finally allowed the opportunity to expand our game with DLC it doesn’t break the core game as it did with Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

  30. Oh come on!!! 🙁 I’m a Skyrim fan who’s put in 140+ hours to the game but because I’m a Ps3 user I don’t get the dlc when XBOX does. There’s just as many PS3 Skyrim fans as Xbox. For someone at level 67 there’s not much to do until the dlc comes out. Can you at least gives us a PS3 DLC release date? Or give us some hint into what its gonna be? Is there going to be any PS3 exclusive dlc?

  31. Yet again, its us PS3 users that get crpped on by Beth. We’ve had the most and the worst bugs and what do we get in return?? the news that our 360 cousins are getting exclusive content AGAIN!! as with all other Beth games. How about you give us something, like real DLC for free, after all i spent £50 on the game and got nothing but bugs and broken questlines. Give us PS3 faithful something to make us happy, or you will loose a very LARGE section of your fanbase.

  32. Thanks for sharing this and for taking the time to post the video. Nevertheless, I would really like to know if this update will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game.

  33. So now the first content releases are only on xbox?

What happened to 30 day timed exclusive? Did you lie about it or just have a change of heart when Microsoft threw you money?

    • the kinect shout system isn’t proper dlc content it will be on a patch like the ranged kill cams and read the last paragraph.

      • looks pretty clear to me:

“Bethesda Game Studios has been hard at work on creating the first set of game add-ons that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. This additional content will add new quests, locations, features, and much more to the world of Skyrim. Stay tuned for more details.”

        • Looks like us PS3 users are getting effed again. We got screwed out of Mehrunes Razor, the Thieve’s Den, Fighters Stronghold, The Orrey, etc. Now the XB360 is getting exclusive new quests, locations, etc? AGAIN? Really Bethesda? Really???

Why must you screw over such a big portion of your fanbase AGAIN?

        • im pretty afraid of this too, i tough beth whas a loyal company that stayed true to their fans, i just hope all the DLC comes to all platforms, i mean what happens to PS3 users? those people have suffered enough, and they dont have nothing, i feel sorry for them, the only thing they have got is FPS issues, freezes, and bugs, i just hope that ps3 users can get something =/
