If you’d like to download the 1.6 Beta Update on Steam, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Log into Steam
  2. Click on Steam in the upper menu
  3. Select Settings
  4. Under the Account tab, go to the Beta Participation section and select Change.
  5. A drop down menu will appear. Select Skyrim Beta.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Steam will now restart. After Steam restarts, Skyrim will be updated to the Beta version currently available.

If you opt into the Beta, be sure to back up your saved games or simply be careful not to overwrite your existing saves. If you decide to opt out of the beta program, your old saves will still work with the current release of Skyrim on Steam (v 1.5).

If you decide you don’t want to run the Beta anymore, redo steps 1 – 4. At the drop down, select NONE – Opt out of all beta programs. Let Steam restart, and Skyrim will automatically update itself back to the latest released version.

  1. Getting pissed off with all these patches, they never fix the issues I’ve been having(Main quest “A Blade In The Dark” stuffed and 130hrs in to game.. now have to start from scratch if I can be bothered).

Perhaps before you release your next title you might want to test the bloody thing before you sell it!

Could you see car companies getting away with selling ropey motors and recalling them every 2 months for an upgrade to sort out issues that should have been resolved before they were put on the market?

    • They tested this game for 3 months… Do you not even understand the scale of the game. These things mess up occasionaly, and on a game that is super big with 100’s of dungeons and quest… its quite hard to find every problem. Its why they do post realease patches when people report problems.

Understand this game is not easy to fix every little thing.

      • Yeah but a complete F’up on teh main quest, teh quest that is THE storyline and hence the entire point of the game is really not acceptable in my books.

  2. I really like that you keep fixing issues and even add new features in patches instead of just fixing the major bugs like a lot of other companies do or making people buy DLC to add these features. This is what makes me pay in full for the game (currently on Steam) and I’ll probably buy the disc version just as well, just because you are doing an awesome job!

    • If you have the PS3 verison then go into “game data utility” folder and delete both the patch data and the regular game data for Skyrim. Reload Skyrim and DL the patch again, and let the game install back onto your PS3 again.
This happened to me and doing this fixed the issue 🙂

    • Easy fix sir. Your on the PS3 i assume?

      Ok do this 🙂

      1) Go to your Game Data Utility (In the XMB menu)

      2) Find Skyrim, and Skyrim Updates

      3) Delete both the Data Utility for Skyrim, and its Updates

      4) Start up the game and download the update and install the game again (Shouldn’t take more then 5-10 min)

      5) Continue playing the game with out the underwater crashing 🙂

(P.S Game Data Utility does not affect saves, so you won’t lose your saves as long as you do it right)

  3. Does this patch fix the issue whereby you are doing Aela’s quest to kill a leader of the Silver Hand, at Valheim Towers? Because at the moment if you had already gone there and killed the Leader, he doesn’t respawn for the mission. All you are left with is a pointer which points to the ground, where his corpse would have been (but it is now missing). Thus, you cannot advance the Companions questline.

I know you can fix this using the console on PC, but it is currently unfixable for PS3 and I imagine Xbox too.

  4. Awesome, whoa I didn’t expect this so soon, thanks a lot 😀 hehe hoping to see more game jam features added, those are really good stuff.

  5. I just want to say Thank you!
Just that, “thank you”. No “but’s” or “if’s”.

Thank you for your continued work, for your generosity in offering us these features, for the fixes, for supporting the modding community, for everything!

    You guys and gals rock!

  6. Update received today on Steam.

Now I’m going to use more horses, is really enjoyable the combat. Things get better, more and more, is a question of patience.

Funny.. the game “Rage” became a cup support, at office, but Skyrim still evolve, the beta program is great 🙂

    Thank BGS

  7. Oh Bethesda… a major update like this, done as a title update instead of paid DLC… promise me you’ll never ever let EA or Activision acquire you!

  8. I’m having a bug in the “The Forsworn Conspiracy”, exactly in the final part, where instead of three Markarth Guards, there are just two and one imperial guard, which doesn’t gives the dialog options to end the quest. I got to jail and etc but i can’t end it. Another bug is in the “Waking Nightmare” quest, when i enter the Nightcaller Temple, Erandur just disappears, and i cannot progress the quest. Some suggest to go to another save, but the last save is in the “Alduin’s Bane” quest, where Alduin is also bugged in middle where, being unable to move and also unabled to be killed.

  9. “I have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good.” – Butt-head.

This is just awesome – the fact that you guys continue to polish this already incredible game with features like this post-release is just incredible. I have played nothing but Skyrim since it’s release and don’t plan on changing that any time soon.

  10. Stability fixes & Nirnroot Fix – about time! Bit gutted that quest fixes are taking so long though. There’s so many that ‘stick’ in your quest log and/or don’t give the reward (any involving Skald, assisting people of Haafingar, retrieve Talos amulet, Esbern’s potion).

…and various other features not working (Again, Esbern’s potion springs to mind, as well as the multitude of companion bugs; they invert owned/stolen status on goods, they get trapped by pendulum traps and they duplicate invisible gear until their inventory is full. Oh, and they can’t ride horses. I would’ve taken that over mounted combat any day).

New features are a nice novelty, but I’m still not keen to start my second playthrough until the basics are in order.

  11. What about the rare crash that happens every time I put my character goes into neck high water. Basically unplayable now!

    • If you have the PS3 verison then go into “game data utility” folder and delete both the patch data and the regular game data for Skyrim. Reload Skyrim and DL the patch again, and let the game install back onto your PS3 again.
This happened to me and doing this fixed the issue 🙂

  12. Yet broken quests are still unfixed. All they have to do is let you decline a radient Companion quest after you already agree to it, and it would be fine for me. “Hired Muscle” asks me to intimidate someone a dragon has already killed. Please fix these glitches and bugs before adding more useless gadgets.

    • Exactly. I made a comment here about how I can’t progress on the Companions story line because of the Silver Hand leader not being respawned after I had already accidentally killed him before I was given the quest. And the mod deleted my comment.

Trying to hide the fact the game is broken…

  13. I wish they’d fix the quests at the Bard’s college. I STILL have those instruments in my inventory and can’t get rid of them 🙁

  14. Looks great. Just, i was really expecting a fix for the miscellaneous quests given by Esbern. If he sends you with the new blades to kill a dragon in a place that you have already slained the dragon, you can´t finish the quest, it´s really frustrating. But, the horseback fighting looks great, thanks.
Ps: Like others, i think it would be awesome to steer boats, just a thought.

  15. And yet no buffs to destruction magic and no nerfs to enchanting.I’m tired of spamming Incinerate over and over again just to take down one enemy when I should be able to cast Firestorm to destroy several enemies but I can’t because Firestorm is weaker than Incinerate even though it cost 4-5 times the magicka to cast it.When is Bethesda going to stop ignoring the balance issues of the game like they don’t even exist.Mods for the PC have already fixed the balance, so I know it’s not impossible for the balanced to be fixed on the console.Seems to me that Bethesda is just too lazy to fix the balance, were this any other company it would have been fixed months ago.

    • oh sorry i was so excited i forgot to post my question does mounted combat include shouting? and if so that would be extremely awesome

      • The horse can shout, but only for horsey things, like “summon oats and red apple” and “summon friendly redhead housecarl with currying brush.”

  16. Sweeeeet! Thanks bethesda! Now can we just get a mage who does facial reconstruction? or how about a pair of reusable hair-cutting scissors? My thane of Solitude still looks like the raggedy prisoner he was in the beginning of the game.

  17. Hey just wondering but why was the earlier comment about the broken radiant Companions quest at Valheim Towers removed?

Ashamed your game is massively broken, maybe???

  18. Excellent. I had been thinking about having a scripted archery range, and this may make it all the more interesting. I can’t wait to see what I can do in the CK.

  19. Has anybody taken down a dragon on horseback yet? Can I turn my horse into a galloping blowtorch of death?

I think it would be cool if you could train your horse to do tricks, like teach it to “flee” from tougher enemies when you dismount and then return when you “whistle.”

  20. Hello,

I like the new 1.6 Beta-Patch. But, sorry Bethesda, the Keybinding-R-“Take All”-No Function-Bug is appeared again. Please fix it.

  21. Thank you very much, gstaff, for this new feature. Releasing it for free is very nice from Bethesda, and in fact, I can’t find any other example of game company having such an awesome update policy as yours.

Besides, I read that casting spells wasn’t allowed yet when mounted. Do you plan to add this feature in an upcoming update?

  22. Apparently my request (which was several other people) was ignored when 1.5 was announced and then released. Gstaff/BGS, please PLEASE fix the dialog UI. It still ignores mouse pointer location when you attempt to select a dialog option making it very difficult to select the option you actually want.

  23. What about releasing an update for the 360 version that allows me to gid rid of all the quest items I still have in my inventory after the quest has still been completed, such as rjorns drum or panteas flute. Also items such as chronicles of nchufelt that I had found on a character before starting the quest and now can’t complete the quest because it does not recognize that I have it in my inventory and I can’t drop the item because it says that it is a quest item. FRUSTRATED. Also Amulet of Talos… Enough said…

  24. Wow awesome update guys! BethSoft you have gained even more respect from me! You guys really are outstanding!

  25. Oh for Pete’s sake. I STILL won’t be able to marry Erik the Slayer? What does it take to get this patched on the 360? I’m tired of living in sin, Bethesda!

  26. This is a fairly nice update. Not sure if it was ever mentioned, but I always thought that cooking could use an overhaul. It’s kinda sad that you come across so many ingredients for it yet the list of things to make is so short and the finished products are really not worth carrying with you.

  27. Awesome! This is actualy a great thing of Bethesda, trying to improve an already awesome game not only with the new feauture but from fixing preeexisting bugs. Can’t wait for this update.

  28. Nice Work Bethesda!! can not wait for this to be on xbox. Any Chance you guys are going to uprade the vampires in Skyrim? I want my Character to live forever but vampires do not have much going for them at the moment…

  29. Will this finally fix the crashing when trying to load the game from start? Because I killed Alduin and have over 100 hours of gameplay, and right after I turned off my ps3. Later I tried playing the game and it would not load it would go to the loading screen and just stay there.

  30. Hey Bethsoft!

As much as I love all of these sickeningly awesome new features you’re constantly adding to the game, (and for free). I BEG of you, please fix a few more quests! Even if it was just the Thieves Guild quest where Delvin will NEVER take all of your larceny items unless you’ve got the PC version. I know you guys will get inundated with requests for quest fixes, but because the Thieves Guild is a huge quest line and quite a common one to do, I’d love to look at all the items I’ve stolen proudly sitting on the shelf. ^_^

  31. Anyone else going, “thats it?”

lol, kill cams were super awesome last update, but what got me playing again was the smithing tweak.

As much as i LOVE new features, i kinda love numbers to =p.

MAKE MAGIC DAMAGE SCALE WITH MAGICKA AMOUNT DANGIT! and cooked food heal way more. id do these things myself already if i choose the PC version.

  32. Hopefully this update will help to fix the lag problems that still affect the PS3 version of Skyrim. 🙂

  33. You could synchronize this feature with the release of the spear-type weapon. The spear-type would double as a lance, perfect for jousting, which could easily be implemented into the game on a story-driven level.

As I’ve not experienced this feature to begin with, perhaps I should focus on what we have been given. I know that the description claims melee and ranged combat, but does this mean that support spells can be used on the run? A detect X spell on the fly would be awesome, as would an invisibility spell.

I have other burning inquiries about this feature and Dawnguard, but one thing at a time.

  34. Dear Bethesda, thank you so much for bringing new features after release! thank you thank you!

Now if you could please include a Jump while Sprinting and a Dodge while Sprinting action would be just awsome! many people are requesting this, perhaps you could add these two features in a future Update/DLC/Expansion? we would appreciate it a lot!

Again, thank you for supporting this awsome game!
