Dragonborn’s Release

Dragonborn is our favorite Skyrim add-on to date, and with reviews making their way online, it appears the gaming press shares that sentiment. In Eurogamer’s review from Dan Whitehead, he likens the content to a full-on expansion that was just what he needed to come back to Skyrim. Here’s an excerpt:

“This isn’t DLC. This is an expansion, like in the good old days. It’s an entirely new area, a blank map waiting to be filled in as you roam, packed with new quests, miscellaneous tasks, dungeons, barrows, ruins and crypts. It’s an absolute beast, with a main storyline that lasts a good few hours and enough supporting content to keep you playing for weeks more.”

Early reviews include:

  • Attack of the Fanboy (Loved It) – Dragonborn is the best Skyrim Expansion to date because it gets back to the roots of what made Skyrim fun in the first place.
  • Xbox 360 Achievements (9/10) – “… Bethesda have created here is exactly what Skyrim fans would have been crying out for… and that’s an experience that captures the brilliance of the main game but in a much more bitesize manner.”
  • Videogamer.com (8/10) — “After completing the main quest in 11-12 hours, I still have a lot of side quests to complete, a majority of the map lies undiscovered and I haven’t even begun gathering all the new loot.”
  • Kotaku – “Worth playing, worth exploring, worth leaping into like you’re starting Skyrim all over again.”
  • While OXM UK and CVG haven’t completed their reviews, they’re already sharing live impressions from their experience.

For those that are playing the content already, we hope you’re having a blast in Solstheim. And as noted in Monday’s blog post, we’re hard at work to make this content available early next year on PS3 and PC. On PS3 in particular, we turned our attention to Dragonborn, as we thought it was the best content to release first, and we didn’t want folks to wait longer. Once it’s ready to go for everyone, we’ll continue our previous work on Hearthfire and Dawnguard for PS3. Each one takes a lot of time and attention to work well in all circumstances and all combinations of DLC. Once we have a better idea of release timing and pricing, we’ll let you know.

And we also have some more stuff planned for everyone next year as well.  We do everything we can to return the support you have given us, whether it’s The Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, game updates, or DLC. Thanks for your continued support and for sharing your adventures with us!

  1. Thank you guys for updating us on PS3 and PC dlc, I’m extremely happy that things are starting to work out, can’t wait until DragonBorn is released!

  2. Gstaff

Some of the faith I once had in your company has been restored.
I look forward to playing this in january/february.
I can not wait much longer so much cool new gear & abilities can’t wait.
Oh and are there stalhrim weapons, I know there’s heavy and light armor variants as well as deathbrand but so far I’ve heard of stalhrim weapons but have seen nothing on them.

  3. @ gstaff even if u release new dlcs this whole saga will never be finished unless you release dawnguard/hearthfire to ps3.is there real progress to dawnguard atleast?

      • I really, really hope you guys give us PS3 users a discount or something….this is getting ridiculous.

Also wondering why you guys seem to be the only gamin company that cant work with the PS3…what gives?

        • You know, I understand its hard to be patient, But if its easier, we can go back to the TES series just not existing on the Playstation at all…

          • It would be better it didn’t exist and I wasn’t lied to and ripped off than having given over my money for a broken product and a trail of falsehoods leading to the top of my once-favorite gaming company.

          • agreed. yeah, i’m a bit impatient but i can still tolerate it. i can actually play it on my wife’s xbox but i dont wanna start a new character and i prefer it on the ps3. nothing against xbox though. hope to hear more goodnews like this from bethesda.

          • It’s not about patience to me. I can wait. But when it comes to no maintenance and no DLC almost a year later, and then being told they were never going to finish working on it… That’s really wrong on all levels. If Gstaff says what is true, I’ll be holding my money to his word. With that said, I will not buy an xbox360 nor any Bethesda games until that content and bug fixes do come.

      • Gstaff, you say “continuing work on those” as if you were making any progress to begin with. You guys have had over a year now to be working on the first two dlcs. Why should we believe that it will suddenly work out now?

    • i absolutely positively do not believe we are getting anything anytime soon in 2013

i think this is just a ploy to shore up their other ps3 offersings through the holidays

      beth == lies

  4. Spend months promising dawnguard and hearth fire, get distracted by shiny new toy, ps3 players suffer. Beth you used to be my favorite video game producers. Now I’m just embarrassed to admit that. -a proud ps3 owner and former Bethesda fan.

    • I didn’t realize there was a soap opera actor on this site. “A proud PS3 owner and…*long pause* former Bethesda fan.”

We all know you are angry but it’s almost laughable to know that as soon as you finally have the content you’ll be as happy as a chimpmunk with a nut.

  5. I wonder if the devs plan to incorporate the spears and the soft physics, if only to wield that awesome whip you guys showed us in your Game Jam video. Make an old fan happy. :3

  6. I’m a PS3 Skyrim player and I am still having a blast playing Skyrim vanilla. I won’t lie I am itching to play Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn as soon as possible but I definitely want them to be as best as they can be. That being sad I don’t want any false hope if there is just no viable way that they can be released on the PS3 I want to know now. I don’t want to be led along and have my hopes dashed. If I wanted that I would call up my ex who consequently is named Beth and put myself through that nightmare that way. I’ll be a little disappointed because I don’t get shiny new things but I think I’ll survive. Like I said I’m still having a blast making new characters and playing Skyrim.

  7. See bethseda just by saying that your releasing dragonborn first but are still gonna work on DB/HF it at least shows that u care about your ps3 players I REALLY HOPE THAT YOUR NOT LEADING US ON AGAIN

  8. Just wanted to let you guys know that, as a PS3 owner, I appreciate how open you guys are about the issues you’ve encountered with developing for the system, and how hard you’re working to overcome those issues.

  9. next year? but the first half or the second? or perhaps the end of the year? I ask about the PS3. Unfortunately as a player of this console I am very disappointed that the PS3 players have been so abandoned. dawnguard was released in July. We have December, and we have not even known dawnguard release date on the PS3.

  10. Wow finally an answer about what you guys are doing! I’m happy that you guys are getting the dragonborn to us Playstation folk, sad to hear you stopped working on dawnguard/hearthfire, i would really like to see hearthfire come to Playstation though, so please don’t give up on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Why is that XBOX always gets the DLCs before PC? (Yes i didn’t mention PS3, since it didn’t get any,and i hope it will get.) the only thing i know is some kind of exclusivity, but why does xbox gets exclusivity? Are they doing this because they want more xbox to be sold? if so, i think this is the most stupid way to do it because if xbox gets everything first then more people will hate it.so if someone can tell me why is does xbox is sooo exclusive please tell me:)

      • Exactly, PC is MS/Windows and should always get the DLC First, now with every other Game. all of a sudden the Xbox gets the Gold while PC has to sit in the Dirt.

        • That´s why you don´t ever support any new Windows or software that comes out in a way to tell MS what you think about PC treatment.

          • What’s wrong with Mac? It’s based on BSD/UNIX and you can run/compile anything that works in Linux will also work in Mac. Prefer terminal?, bash, perl, python, even ruby is working out of box in Mac. LaTeX fanboy? MacTex is there for you. The kernel of Mac is opensource as well (not Aqua though)

        • Thats not Bethesda’s fult. Well maybe just a little but they dont just have a favorite platform and play favorites. Bethesda is a buissiness and a buissiness is there to make money, so when Microsoft throws money at Bethesda to give it to xbox they take it as would anyone. Pluss Microsoft cant speek or bid for all pcs because they dont own them. Besides pc gets awsom mods where xbox dosnt so quit your complaining because that wont make it come out any faster and just play the game. After all it is ps3 players that got the short straw anyways not that they shout complain and yell and yell at the guy guys that are trying to fix it.

          • The only PC players complaining are the ones that stupidly blasted through the whole thing and are now complaining it’s too short.
When you don’t want to do much, find some amazing scenery and turn off the HUD.

      • From a PS3 player’s perspective… Who cares who gets what first. Maintenance and DLC were given to Xbox360 and PC, while PS3 was left in the dark. They say it’s to hard to program, but then maybe it’s time to hire better programmers? Until I get DLC for the PS3, I won’t spend a dime on anything from Bethesda.

      • Maybe you hate it but that is only a generation problem. The new gamer generation will buy the platform which offers the most games – in that case xbox360 and in future xbox720…

the marketing strategy of microsoft is clever and not short acted….

      • Xbox gets first priority because PC is not a Microsoft invention. Therefore, it does not qualify for exclusivity.
MS doesn’t own the hardware or the label to anyone’s PC, so there’s no way in hell it can qualify for the same deal as XBox.
Anyway, as Dragonborn’s Internal Label is DLC2, this horrow show should end soon, as it’s already hit XBox.

      • A lot of posts are being deleted. That post was probably in reply to a post by Mick that was deleted.

Apparently the basic ability to sort orphaned comments into the main comment stream by date – or to remove orphaned replies from deleted posts – is too advanced for this blog.

  11. Pricing? Surely you are joking. Everyone else has had this content for months and you have given ps3 users nothing so far except to fix the broken product you first released. And now you expect us to PAY you for your incompetence? Oh boy. I haven’t heard a whopper like that in a while. You guys are fucking insane. I’d be surprised if you got PS3 DLC before the GOTY edition comes out for pc and shitbox360. Get your act together Bethesda. And as for your excuse of being too concerned about playability to release what you have now, it’s horseshit. All us ps3 users found out how concerned you were shortly after the original release of Skyrim. Absolutely disgraceful.

  12. LoL, Another insubstantial comment from Bethesda.

    quote from Bethesda:
“And as noted in Monday’s blog post, we’re hard at work to make this content available early next year on PS3 and PC.”

    >>Your are hard at work? You are dancin´ on too much parties:
    -fixin´the xbox bugs
-MAYBE workin on DG,HF for ps3
-and much more stuff we didn´t know
Furthermore you use false piety: You´re paid by microsoft for the dlc delays on other platform, everyone with a brain recognize that…not because of too much work (you already had the option to wait instead of favoring the xbox).

Besides Dragonborn is a game for the winter months. A gamer like me who spent more than 600 hours in the main game and its dlc DG will also spend 100 of hours in Solstheim. But with a release date of “early next year” (you guys wont work on christmas and the following holidays) i´ll kill the first dragonborn in the summer – while i´m sweatin´… great look-out!

now i´ve lost the little bit of respect i´ve had for u guys – miserable statement!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I don’t know about anybody else but this line in particular:

“Once we have a better idea of release timing and pricing, we’ll let you know.”

read to me like a loud and resounding “screw you ps3 players.”

      • I read it too but this content it´s neither fish nor fowl.

Is it so difficult to make a clear statement? They made it possible to play dragonborn for the xbox months ago (1,2 or 3, we didn´t know…), so it should also be possible to say: yeah we´ll offer a price reduction; you will be able to download db, dg, hf within January …

But that did not happen, only opium for the folk!

        • I hope u -gstaff- will moderate the answer to Pandora4606 fairly, otherwise i interpret it as an attack of the freedom of opinion and i´m ready to fight for this right 😉

    • You make an excellent point. ‘Early 2013’ is difficult for many people who are in school. Whether that’s university or primary education, most of the hours spent on video games comes during breaks. Dragonborn has perfect timing for 360 users during their winter breaks – while the rest of us get shafted.

  13. Mick its the best answer they have given us. Take it or leave it, but I’m happy they admitted to what they are doing instead of leaving us completely in the dark. We all know they suck at bringing dlc to Playstation but at least we are finally getting something, but really calm down it’s just a game!

    • What does we know now? No release date. No reason why we can wait longer than the xbox gamers who have spoiled me today about the stuff in DB… What the hell are the news in this statement? I can´t find them, only the same insubstantial chain of words:
      we are working hard
we try to make it possible for everyone
ps3 will get the db before they get the other dlcs
      and so on…

AAAAAAAhhh, thats only opium for the folk!!!!!!!

  14. So the reason PS3’s been waiting so long is that you put DG & HF on hold to work on more MS favouring? Cheers! That really sounds like you care about all users on all platforms!

  15. My faith in bethseda hasent been restored im still pissed of we have to wait a month for dragonborn but this post has so far been better then there usual “were working on it”

  16. I’m glad you guys didn’t drop dragonborn and hearthfire completely with ps3. and we’ll be able to get dragonborn too? this is terrific news. i’m still playing skyrim on ps3, and ill be looking forward to owning the dlcs soon enough. thank you for all of your hard work.

  17. You know, as a ps3 player its just really hard to believe you are going to throw anything our way. I just don’t think your company really cares about this contingent of its customer base as anything other then an unfortunate afterthought. You string us along with with your broken promises and then expect us to get all excited when you dangle another maybe in front of our faces? I just can’t. Even after reading and re-reading the blog you only address us with a very dismissive “we’ll let you know.” But you care right Bethesda?

  18. Gstaff
So what you are saying is the last six months us ps3 players have been waiting is for nothing since you jumped to dragonborne. I have been checking for updates several times a day. Us Ps3 users are once again being shafted. We WILL have a diffrent playing experience when we finally get a dlc. Other players will enter solstenheim with dragonbone armor, weapons, shouts, crossbows, etc.
To say We do everything we can to return the support you have given us, whether it’s The Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, game updates, or DLC. Thanks for your continued support and for sharing your adventures with us is bullshit considering the fact that the only thing you have given us is mounted combat and a couple of bug fixes.
You and your company have shafted ps3 user during skyrim’s whole existence and to say you care is absurd.
I wish i could be thankful like everybody else but i cant your company as shown there true colors in this whole ordeal. I wish i had never bought your product in the first place and logged as many hours as i did.

  19. I understand there can be difficulties making a game play correctly on multiple platforms. However, the fact that we are looking at a 6 month (or longer) delay on Dawnguard and Hearthfire really is unacceptable. PS3 users like me, purchased a game that advertised downloadable content on the game box, just like it was advertised on the boxes for the other systems. If there is a difference between the DLC availability, it really should be apparent by looking at the box. The term “false advertising” comes to mind. The exclusivity deal with Microsoft is an evil we’ve come to terms with, but having to play the DLC out of order is something entirely different. It really looks like you’re just trying to sell us something to keep us quiet. At this point, I was really hoping PS3 users would get the option of buying all 3 DLC, bundled, at a significant discount. Now, it looks like we will pay full price for the third release, then have to wait for the first and second. It really is absurd. Some kind of olive branch needs to be extended to the PS3 players. We are happy to get Dragonborn, but we want, and deserve, much more.

  20. Are you still removing my comments? I didn´t use obscene words…
We can play a game, the whole night long. I´ve a flexible job and i have many ips so blockin´ me is like fishing in a vulcan – senseless 😉

    I WROTE:
it is shameless to post parts of the reviews of dragonborn because we (most players world wide) can´t play it!!

I´m mad at you Bethesda – and you gstuff!

  21. Thank you for the update!!! I can’t wait til I get the chance to play Hearthfire, Dawnguard and Dragonborn!!!
    – PS3-owner and proud

  22. I’m actually quite happy that we’re getting more DLC. I thought I read that you guys were only going to promote ESO next year. I don’t want my TES5 experience to end just yet.

  23. Congratulations Bethesda on the positive reviews. Looking forward to the DRAGONBORN DLC when it is ready. Still endlessly enjoying SKYRIM as i am all Elder Scrolls chapters so for me the waiting is nonexistent as just like before suddenly the DLCs will be before my eyes 😀

Happy holidays creators of the magnificent!

  24. I don’t even care anymore. I logged over 300 hours into a Skyrim that was so glitchy that it was barely even playable. I accomplished every worthwhile achievement that I could find. I haven’t touched the game for exactly 1 year as of today. Why on earth would a shafted PS3 player like myself purchase DLC that has been played to death by everyone else already. It was awesome to hear about the dawnguard exploits that I couldn’t play myself. Can’t wait to do the same with dragonborn. I mean really why bother returning to a game that I haven’t been given a legitimate crap about for over a year. Oh, unless you count being lead on for months about DLC that isn’t coming. Might as well work on some new Oblivion DLC while you’re at it. That’s old and worn out too.

      • @ gstaff

Everytime I try to post comments, which are larger than one or two sentences I get the following error:

Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!

But the comment I’d like to post does not appear on bethblog.

    • If you guys would have released DG and HF now and gave us something to do while we wait the bulk hatred would have dropped to a fraction. Just Sayin.

  25. I played all day yesterday and that wasn’t long enough. As someone who enjoyed Morrowind a lot, I’m so thrilled about this DLC! I had to stop a few times and gasp.

    • I just hope the new Fallout doesn’t have random super-mutants attacks or something like that…

Life on the wasteland is already hard as it is.

  26. This purposely delayed DLC crap is just that, crap. There is NO good reason to delay this for PC, other than pure greed and bending over for Microshaft. I will NOT be buying this when you finally condescend to release it for PC, because obviously money is the only thing you people care about anymore. Therefore, I will let my wallet speak for me. No money for you! Maybe then you will think twice before deciding to shaft PC players (you know, the guys that spent the money that BUILT your company in the first place, remember us?)

  27. I wish when next-generation consoles arrive you’ll treat both Playstation Orbis and Xbox 720 (or whatever they call it) equally

  28. *Being a ‘professional’ gaming company you should have no problem working on all 3. So this whole time, and everytime you guys said ” we’re working on it” you were lieing, simple as that.

  29. Great to hear. I’m a PS3 gamer and I am rather excited to get my hands on this and hopefully the other two. Really though, the people who are saying they will drop the series because of two missed DLCs are somewhat stupid. Can we say over-sensitive? We need a few Duke Nukem fans to come into the TES fanbase to show these sissys the meaning of patience.

  30. I think ps3 players should appreciate that they are working on it, rather than giving up. and im sure it wont be offered free, but perhaps cheaper. i mean they still spent so much time and resources making the ps3 version workable, and if you want the dlc that badly, you wont mind paying a small fee

  31. This is a semi-helpful post. One question: I (and many other readers/posters) have been assuming that MS paid for a renewed deal. Is this true? If not, then why was Dragonborn developed for 360 first?
