Now on Steam: Skyrim 1.9 (Update)

Update (3/18): Beginning today, Steam users can download the Skyrim 1.9 title update – featuring Legendary new features (see below) and new bug fixes. For console players out there, we’re hoping to release 1.9 later this month — we’ll keep you updated when we have specific dates.

  1. My only concern with all of these bug fixes is the lack of attention to many well-known bugs, like being unable to put daedric boots created at the Atronach Forge into your inventory. Also, could you make it so player can have their families move into Severin Manor from the Dragonborn add-on? One other thing that bugs me is Goldenglow Estate; was it meant to be a player home, or is it simply a loose end from the Thieves Guild questline?

  2. Sounds great – here’s my question.

With the method of allowing for unlimited leveling – why do the reset of a skill tree? What would be the cons of say – allowing the player to hit 101 in Heavy Armor and simply allowing for diminished returns in the way the actual skill level increases the respective skill’s math?

    Here’s another thought on that:
Smithing at 101 could increasingly be harder to level with certain math implemented as opposed to leveling your smithing to 100 multiple times and essentially inflating level + preferred stats with minimal early exploration. Although the example here doesn’t bear much importance as you can manipulate many factors to level if you so choose as well as utilize the console if you are a pc gamer.

I’m more curious as to choosing this route on a development level more than arguing against it or anything since it’s definitely a fun feature either way you go with removing a level cap.

Thanks for amazing work as always! 🙂

  3. Thanks for being the best game developer and for the commitment to make your game better, even so long after its release.

“Fixed rare instance of couriers who would appear only dressed in a hat”,
I guess this means… no more naked couriers! 🙂

Looking forward to Legendary difficulty setting!

  4. Great fix list. Would love to see Collette Marence sell Guardian Circle in the future though. Pretty disappointing to get Restoration 100 and not have one of the Master skills.

  5. This is awesome, but is there any plan to fix the Miraak problems in dragonborn? Been stuck on him on PC and 360 since launch of the dlc.

  6. Can the ogham inferium glitch not be fixed? Cause I’m working on a series where it’ll seem more like a show then a game but the big characters i use the glitch to level them up quickly so they’re good at what they do.

  7. Awesome to see. Some of these bugs were really annoying. there is one that I don’t see mentioned. My game still locks up if I go underwater. Been that way since an update about a year ago. I don’t suppose that’s on the agenda?

  8. I put an extra 100 hours in since the DLC for PS3 came out and still going strong, the only issue I found recently was giving Dragon bone and scale to the Blade guy, he gave me some potion for it but the quest still say’s to take the stuff to him where he won’t accept it or show on the map. 🙁 I shouldn’t have killed the dragon. doh.

  9. I like the bugfixes, but I fail to see the point of the new features, especially reseting skills. IMO the beauty of the perk system was that you couldn’t have them all and infinite leveling will ruin that.

Oh well, nobody is forcing me to use them, so I guess I’ll just take the bugfixes and be happy with that.

    • Capping at 81 was reasonable, for the time it was released. With so much extra content nowadays (both in Bethsoft and 3rd party DLCs), this limit restricts those os us who worked to level the character into walking around with a maxed character for most of our playtime.

It also means that you can’t focus on a specific character build if you want to level: if you want ot advance your character, your thief/assassin build *must* grind completely inappropriate skills that you would never use in normal play: all five schools of magic, alchemy, enchanting, smithing, heavy armor, two-handed, etc.

This system strikes me as pretty darn close to perfect, permitting custom builds without unbalancing them. There’s a hefty price you’re paying for leveling more in a skill you’ve maxed out, but it’s just about worth it.

I’d have to say, say it’s one of the most innovative level-cap removals I’ve ever seen. Beats “new game plus” hands down!

  10. I feel sorry for the PS3 peasants. They can’t afford a good gaming rig, or a GOD LIKE (Xbox 360) console, and instead have to settle for an inferior device.

Betheseda, Ubisoft, Epic Games, etc have abandoned the shitty PS3. Hahaha, even after FINALLY releasing DLC for Skyrim on the PS3, it still doesn’t work properly.

You PS3 peasants need to jump ship and join the Xbox community. Betheseda games work the BEST on 360, no ands, ifs or buts. 360 FTW!!!

PS: WiiU? The rip-off tablet of the century!

  11. They’re fixing the Oghma Infinium infinite leveling? Why? If I want to level up infinity, then I should be able to.

Nonetheless, everything else looks good. At least we finally get a real patch….

  12. All of you PC gamers talking about how consoler gamers can burn because you get access to a beta?..I do not mind you guys as beta testers for us console gamer. You log those bugs and I do want to thank you for all of your volunteer work. I will love the finished version of this update.

    Your friend,

    The Console gamer.

  13. Does resetting a skill from 100 to 15 mean we lose all effectiveness with it? Meaning our one-handed sword damage would be severely reduced, and light armour defences would be useless? Because that sounds more like a “Handicap” system than a “Legendary” system.

Seriously. All we’d be doing is gimping our characters and then having to work our socks off just to get back to where we were. I don’t understand why we would make our characters deliberately forget how to use a skill they’ve invested dozens, if not hundreds, of hours into mastering.

    • It lets you boost your health and magicka exceptionally high levels. You can use other skills to make up for missing levels and perks (enchanting and blacksmithing for the various weapon skills and enchanting free magicka for combat magic.)

Even if the skill goes back to useless, if you get through and work your way up again you’re adding another 800 points to your stats. More if you can do it more than once. With the dlc as it is, you get to level 81 well before you finish everything, so this would give some way to meaningfully advance your character after that point.

    • It drops the skill level, but given that you’ll presumably be fighting more difficult enemies with more powerful weapons you’ve collected, you should begin moving up quicker than you remember.

      • Not to be rude, but that sounds like a bit like taking the lazy way out. Just like with dragon riding?

Why not just remove the cap for skill level, letting them go beyond 100? That should be programmatically just as easy, and with legendary difficulty wouldn’t be too crazy I don’t think.

Also, dragonriding should be like riding a horse.

        • Dragon Riding was implemented that way because of consoles. Even some PCs that have better tech than consoles have a hard to keeping up with it. It would crash the game was too much stuff it being loaded at once, especially in the consoles week point; the RAM.

          • Oh, and it was possible on the Devkits as they have better specs, for example the RAM is 1GB instead of 512 MB. There was other problems than just crashing because the textures weren’t being loaded fast enough. (Clipping and a lot more, plus Dragon Riding would break the immersion if the consoles you handle it) The Legendary skills makes more sense than uncapping does. Mainly because 100 is the master, and there would still be a level cap anyways. It would be in the 1,000’s if all skills were set to 999. The max level cap now is 65535, but that’s the hard-coded level cap.

      • Thanks. I think I understand the system from a game perspective (allows you to level up higher) but it just doesn’t make any sense to me. TES has always been about improving by doing, practice makes perfect, defining a character through his skills that he’s honed. Magically making him forget those skills, so he can relearn them again… doesn’t seem like a fitting implementation for a TES game. It’s prioritizing game mechanics over immersion and sensibilities too much for my personal taste.

But I do appreciate the inclusion for those who will use it, and I definitely appreciate the continued bug fixes!

        • Then for the sake of your immersion, don’t do it! At that point in the game this is definitely not required and is simply a feature for those who just want to try out a whole new set of skills once they’ve committed to a set for a very long time and renews a sense of challenge later on. And also, I think there’s some sort of hidden agenda behind this. They’re giving us a power that offers more perks. The only logical reason I believe they would do this, is if they’re planning on releasing new perk trees for us to use these extra perks on.

P.S. Dragonborn offers a different way to reset perk trees that you may find more lore-friendly

          • Actually, removing the level cap is one one the top requested features now, the first being spears, but that will be most likely for later.

    • Well every level gives you hp/mp/stamina choice so you could theoretically increase those unendingly. As well as the fact that you when you go down to 15, those first skill ups will shoot up depending on the enemy/task involved. I’d recommend resetting only one skill tree you use alot, aka a weapon one. Yeah you’ll kill a lot slower, but you have crazy weaponry by 100 anyways and many utilities (Shouts galore/plenty of survivability.).

Still, I believe skills operate off an unseen exp system for just the skill being used. For instance, a low level one handed skill hitting say – a level 50 dragon should level up the skill through it’s early stage quickly in just that fight. It’s like if you have ever thrown on a shield and have virtually no skill and start blocking against a high level enemy – it shoots up each hit blocked until it gets around 40-50 where it starts demanding more “exp” from the hits.

I’d recommend resetting only one skill tree you use a lot, aka a weapon one. Yeah you’ll kill a lot slower, but you have crazy weaponry by 100 anyways and many utilities (Shouts galore/plenty of survivability.). Armor isn’t a bad choice either if you have amazing armor anyways and plenty of passives going. This makes sense due to physical damage reduction via armor caps. The short of it being – when you hit a certain percentage of physical reduction – armor nor passives actually do anything for it anymore. I might be wrong but I believe the armor cap is like 800 or something without any physical reduction percentages in place(Which I believe is like 80%?). My numbers might be slightly off as I was too bum to go look it up.

  14. nice update, but i have new problems with skyrim now… i started playing dawnguard on my ps3 a few days ago and noticed this:
    1. exloring caste volkihar is not possible without heavy lag and my screen freezes for 3-5 sec permanently. this only happens in the “left” part of the castle (feran’s laboratory,…) and it gets heavier if you stay there. (6 mb savefile, ps3 new)
    2. the textures of almost every item and weapon get very dark (almost black). this happened in my item and loot inventory.
i hope this will be fixed with the next update.

  15. Hey Bethesda. Love Skyrim. I just have one problem. Every time my player (or camera view) go under water, my entire game freezes.I am playing the PS3 version and I have downloaded all the expansions. The problem has been ongoing since the 1.6 patch. Anyways, this problem will not allow me to finish the Dawngaurd vampire story quests. I read over the bugs covered in the upcoming patch and didn’t see this. Help me Bethesda, you’re my only hope.

  16. I’m impressed with all the bug fixes. Is the follower Derkeethus still broken? Any plans to fix it if it isn’t working?

  17. Love all the fixes! There are a couple other things I wish would be fixed/added, though. The Lost Apprentices quest doesn’t start as it should when you talk to the guy at the college. Someone had to make a mod on Steam Workshop to fix that. It also seems as if we should be able to do a quest for Rune, similar to the one we do for Brand-Shei, but no quest actually starts when you tell him you’ll keep an eye out for information. I’d love to see that fixed. I like Rune and I’m sad I can’t actually help him. 🙁

Definitely happy with several of the bug fixes, though. I’ve never gotten a reward from Vekel for doing his quest, and more than once I’ve had problems with Alduin being invincible during my first fight with him. It always takes a few attempts at reloading the save before I can damage him.

    • YES! There needs to be a quest for Rune and for Sapphire. (The notes in Glover Mallory’s house in solthsiem were an awesome expansion, but i would like to be able to tell Sapphire her dad is alive.

  18. Pantea’s flute is no longer a quest item after completing “Pantea’s Flute”

Fixed rare instance in “Fetch me that Book” where books found before getting the quest would not be properly recognized

Are these fixes retroactive? My 11/11/11 character has these issues and I’d love to finally be able to turn in a book I found before I got the quest and bet rid of some of the bards college stuff stuck in my inventory.

  19. Wow, very nice update! Can’t wait for the Legendary features… Might even start over my lv81 just to experience it all again. Gonna be happy that the cap is no longer an odd number. LOL

Now i’m just crossing my fingers that the spouse kidnapping bug will be fixed soon, I’m tired of Mjoll walking around while facing in one direction. =(

Other than that, what a list of bug fixes, truly impressive. I’ve always said Skyrim will be nearly perfect by the end… and Oblivion took 2 years to perfect, so keep up the excellent work Bethesda!

    • That’s what caused Ysolda to walk backwards..?

so she’s not really walking backwards, just stuck in one direction.
      thanks for that info
BTW, happens on xbox and PC version.

Will be happy when I read.
“Fixed rotated Lydia bed 180* so she can now use her owned bed in Breezehome”

      • Yea I married Ysolda, and she stands in one spot, trying to walk, but other than that she does nothing. She must be getting tired of standing so long.

  20. Will Legendary skills have any added benefits? Will the perks provided be enhanced in any way, or will they simply go back to baseline? In any case, I think it’s a great idea!

      • Is this optional? I think it is a neat idea, but I’m already running mods that allow skills to bypass level 100, thus negating the need for this (though the difficulty jump would be fun to play through a few times).

On a partially-related note, will you ever enable an option that allows us to create entirely NEW perk trees via mods, instead of having to simply replace them outright?

Also, I can’t tell if I’m happy or sad that the Oghma bug is getting fixed. On one hand, it’s cheating, and I’m on a PC, so the need is moot. On the other, I have had more than one level 50 character suddenly decide he needs to become a warrior/mage/thief expert overnight.

Regardless, thanks for the continued support.

  21. It says that perks will be returned when you continue a skill on Legendary. Does that mean the perk points you spent disappear completely, or that they will be available for reallocation?

  22. Thanks for the patch, looks like loads of bugs are getting fixed. One question though. Is there a fix on the way for the glitches with Thieves Guild Hoods causing vampire lords to lose their hair?

  23. How about the bug where the left hand takes ages to swing a sword or any weapon. It only goes to normal speed when using Elemental Fury, and once the effect is gone (no sound or no animations) the left hand goes back to being super slow. It makes duel wielding impossible.

  24. What about the auto saves eventually corrupting save files? Will that ever be fixed?

I turn off autosaving on what I can but the game still autosaves during quests and that eventually causes a corrupted save after progressing to various points along the main quest.

  25. The point is to gain more levels. If you use it, it’s because you have everything maxed out, at which point you deal with a few missing perks. Just reset the skills you use the least.

  26. Glad I will be able to craft Imperial Light Armor but will you guys get to fixing armor and weapons that for some reason you can’t improve like the Studded Imperial Armor or the the Skyforge Steel Dagger and will you make it where you disenchant things like those waterwalking boots in DB and put it on a ring or pendent? Otherwise legendary mode looks great!! Looks like I will be spending loads more time on this game thank you for continuing to keep this game going!

  27. I just hope they fix the Hearthfire bug where we cant buy the Lakeview Manor. But overall I’m liking all the new fixes, Keep up the good work Bethesda, you rock!

  28. Hey Bethesda , I’m glad to see that there is a continued support for Skyrim ! ( And it’s even BIG sized )
So I shall ask for something:
Make First-Person Werewolves , Vampire Lords and most importantly FIRST-PERSON HORSE RIDING ( So bow using on horse would actually work ! )
I know you can do this Bethesda , or maybe catering to the Role-Players/Old and Hardcore fans is too bad for business ?

Anyone who agrees please reply with +1 so we MAYBE could get some attention.

  29. There are still some weird bugs with the quest “Blood on the ice”, and followers are very dumb, worse since 1.8, very hard for them to follow correctly me…

  30. This is a great update, but can we ever expect a fix for Proudspire Manor’s servant’s quarters not upgrading properly?

  31. Will this make miraak killable for me. Because I still have no fix guys. I still have no fix 😡

and dont refer me to your troubleshooting guide cause after emailing emailing I got nothingggggg.

    • I absorb dragon souls instead of him every single time. Guys ive tried everything. I just want a meager fix :(, I killed frostkrag and the ebony knight and miraak still mocks me.

  32. I hope they fix it to where you cant cant catch vampirism when youre already a lycan. It really pisses me off that I am affected by the sun when there is a random dragon attack, or any other battles and quests out in the sun.

  33. Will the Oghma trick still work with other things like with barrels? And um, does the legendary mode mean we can upgrade our Health, Magicka and Stamina to max?
Keep up the good work Bethesda, can’t wait till it’s out! 🙂

  34. So will we be keeping the perks that we put into our perk trees? or is that all removed as well?

    (spoiler Start)

I thought that was why you guys put that ‘reset perk tree’ thing in dragonborn after killing Miraak.

    (Spoiler end)

You should also know that if this removed level cap is true, then people could be level 1000 in a mere day (given the patience) by raising their speech with the Dunmer bartender in Riftens Black-Briar mead store by persuading him over and over again. This would raise their level by 3 or 4 every time it is reset.

  35. Gallus Encoded Journal not marked us a quest item! Finally, yes!

About the White Phial. It worked fine but at some point it stopped refilling for me and now it’s empty all the time. There was some kind of a bug with it duplicating when refilling if I remember correctly (after so many hours in the game I seriously don’t remember) so I probably threw out the working one…

And Beth, please look through the Dawnguard dlc. I’m finally playing it after it was released on PS3, but it’s a glitch fest, especially Durnehviir summoning (when learning Words of Power from him there were many bugs like his insta-death after summoning or backwards flying. He also reappeared a couple of times when fast traveling while making funny but annoying things like blocking my movement :P). Also if I didn’t have found Jiubs page number 9 sticked to the ceiling under it’s default location by chance I would probably never have finished the quest. And there are many more Dawnguard releated bugs…

On the other hand Dragonborn was mostly bug/glitch free for me 🙂

PS: VERY IMPORTANT. It seems game lags, again, after installing and playing the dlc’s for a couple of hours. The reason might be the size of game saves again (item’s in containers being the reason?) My saves are 18mb in size at the moment (from 14mb before the dlc’s).

  36. How does the legendary difficulty differ from the master difficulty? (master difficulty=deal half damage, take double damage, legendary difficulty=?)

  37. We already have a respec feature with dragonborn… pls harder enemies and more skills, or just harder melee and ranged enemies
