This morning we’re pleased to announce that QuakeCon, the ultimate video game festival, will kick off on Thursday, August 4th 2011. As tradition goes, id’s co-founder and technical director, John Carmack, will kick things off with his keynote address.
In addition to the keynote and other special events (more on that soon), this year’s event will give you a chance to see some great presentations on our upcoming titles, including Todd Howard’s first public presentation of Skyrim!! QuakeCon will also see the first public demo of Prey 2, which will be demoed by Chris Rhinehart, Project Lead at Human Head Studios. And in addition to being able to play RAGE on the show floor, attendees will be able to check out a special presentation of the award-winning shooter given by Matt Hooper, the game’s Design Director.
QuakeCon 2011 will take place at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. The event remains FREE to general admission and BYOC attendees thanks to the support of id and Bethesda Softworks, as well as the QuakeCon volunteer staff and the 2011 event sponsors and exhibitors. Doors to the QuakeCon BYOC will open on Thursday, August 4th at 9:00am CST and will remain open through 12:00pm CST on Sunday, August 7th.
Gamespot recently visited id’s new office for a chance to go hands on with RAGE. During the trip, they saw several areas showcasing the game’s varied gameplay — including a look at the game’s main faction, the Authority.

My title is Design Director, which would imply that I handle the design direction. However, like most folks at id, I’m allowed to apply my skills beyond my title’s scope into other areas that benefit the team as a whole.
So, while my main passion has always been design and I do work closely with our group of talented designers, I’ve also been responsible for collaborating with the core technology group. I’ve always been excited by our cutting edge directions we take at id, and one of my tasks has been to help focus the practical application of our technology. With industry leading engineers like John Carmack, Robert Duffy, Jan Paul Van Waveren, and many more, I consider that a fun and exciting endeavor more than just a task.
As in industry pioneer, id Software has been pushing the boundaries of the FPS genre since its inception. With RAGE and Tech5, id is revolutionizing the modern FPS, rethinking the player experience and facing the production and technological challenges that go along with it. Matt Hooper, id’s Design Director, will walk us through a demo of RAGE and discuss key aspects of the game’s development.
